Perishables Protection: Problem description
Perishable time-temperature sensitive productsexposed to high temperature and sun during air transportation and transit leads to yield and shelf life loss and replacement
Example: Horticultural products
• When covered by film are subject to excessive condensation
• When uncovered are subject to excessive water loss
• When uncovered products are subject to excessive speed of temperature exchange
• Plastic insulated covers do not allow products to respire

The higher temperature the shorter the storage life of horticultural products the greater the amount of loss as most factors that destroy the product or lowers its quality occur at a faster rate as the temperature increases
Lettuce stored at 25 C becomes unsalable within 7 days, while lettuce stored at 10 C will reach the unsalable condition in approximately 18 days and lettuce stored at 0°C requires 35 days to be unsalable.
• Asparagus has more rapid loss of quality reaching the point of being unsalable in 3 days when stored at 25°C.

Humidity.

A moist food will give up moisture to the air while a dry food will absorb moisture from the air.
Fresh horticultural products have a high moisture content and need to be stored under conditions of high relative humidity to prevent moisture loss

Solar Radiation
Solar radiation on food held in direct sunlight increases the temperature above the ambient temperature. The amount of increase in temperature depends on the intensity of the radiation, shape and duration of exposure
Intensity of solar radiation depends upon latitude, altitude, season, time of day, and degree of cloud cover.
Under clear skies it is most intense when the sun is most directly overhead. Hence the intensity of radiation is greater in tropical zones than in temperate zones.

Qualitative Summary of trials
Specific advantages for air transport
Allows shipping cooling during transport of temperature sensitive products, like horticultural products or additional protection to pharmaceutical products in insulated packaging
• Extremely light weight
• Efficient compared to no protection (majority of the perishable air freighted)
• Efficient and cost effective compared to heavy insulated covers
• Humidity control, gas permeability (oxygen!)
• Works best against solar heat.
To be used as added protection during air transportation rather than replacement for packaging material to avoid suffocation and irreversible damages with influence on shelf life and goods quality
Thermal protection against heat comes from its capacity to reflect solar radiation while allowing cooling during cold room storage significantly faster than other insulated covers
Important: Sufficient pre cooling and correct temperature management from start of the cool chain essential for optimal performance
Protecting sensible perishables for temperature vaiations (bananas)Problem:
• Bananas are sensible to cold air, humidity loss and lack of oxygen
• Bananas require lower and upper temperature control
• Quality of bananas influences pricing
Trial:
Cardboard transporting branded bananas (9-18kg) by truck and train were covered with covers in early spring and late summer
Outcome:
•Temperature variations were limited in microclimate conditions
•Temperature control between distribution center and point-of sales conditions is improved, when bananas are transported with other perishable goods requiring cold temperatures
