6 Mosquito Repelling Plants

By Stphanie Figy, July 21, 2015

Summer means it’s time to fire up the grill and invite friends over for a barbecue, but it seems like unexpected guests always crash the party.

No, not your in-laws — we’re talking about pesky bugs!

There are ways to keep mosquitoes and other insects away besides drowning yourself in bug spray. For a more green approach, try installing some of these insect-repelling plants around your yard.

1. Marigolds

Not only do they make your landscape more attractive, but marigolds also have a distinct smell that repels mosquitoes. Plant from seed or get a starter plant from a nursery or floral department. Place potted

marigolds near mosquito entry-points, such as doors and windows, or on a deck or balcony where you spend a lot of time outdoors. They also deter insects that prey on tomato plants — an added bonus for gardeners

2. Catnip

Catnip grows best in full sun. Warning: Your catnip might bring all the cats to the yard. The perennial herb, related to mint, is easy to grow. While it repels mosquitoes in close proximity, some people apply crushed leaves for more protection.

3. Citronella

Citronella is found in bug sprays and insect-repelling candles, but for maximum effectiveness, consider planting it. Citronella is one of the most common ingredients in insect repellents, due to its strong smell, which masks mosquito attractants. The perennial clumping grass grows 5 to 6 feet, and can be planted in the ground or kept in large pots. Citronella plants thrive best in full sun and areas with good drainage. There is also a citronellas tree that grows about 12 feet high,

4. Lavender

Dried lavender can be placed in wardrobes to dissuade moths. In addition to smelling lovely, aiding in relaxation and promoting restful sleep, lavender dissuades mosquitoes and gnats from invading your outdoor dinner party when planted in the garden or in pots placed by windows, doors and entertainment areas.

The dried flowers can also be placed in wardrobes to repel moths.

5. Basil

Basil leaves don't have to be crushed to prevent mosquito invasions. Enjoy delicious pesto dishes, and keep mosquitoes at bay, with this insect-repelling herb. Basil is one of the few herbs in which you don’t have to crush the leaves to reap its benefits. Lemon basil and cinnamon basil are the best varieties to prevent unwanted pests.

6. Lemon balm

Lemon balm aroma wards off mosquitoes, but attracts pollinators, such as bees and butterflies. It is also known as horsemint. It’s fast growing, drought resistant plant and reseeds itself, so consider planting in a pot rather than in your yard to avoid a lemon balm takeover.

Stephanie Figy crafted stories for Angie's List beginning in 2012. She covered a wide range of family and personal services topics, including pets, financial matters and well-ness.

There’s a New Printer in Town

(Continued from Page 1)

The model C552 is much better than the model C353 we had been using. Also, the price for the new copier was almost the same as the price the LVNA originally paid for the old Konica printer. It looked like a good deal!

In the end, my company (FMFA inc.) purchased the printer and had it delivered to our house. The LVNA may use it in exchange for paying for the paper and toner used. The day was saved.

The new printer was delivered the day before we had to start printing the newsletter you are reading now. Chuck and his wife stayed until about 7:00pm on last Friday evening to make sure it was set up and working properly. Also, my neigh-bor Daniel helped us get it off the truck and into our house safely. I then spent a few hours on Saturday morn-ing getting it connected to our home network and to the computers we use.

The first pages of the newsletter came off the press at about 2:00pm Saturday afternoon. The new printer is so fast (about 40% faster than the old one) it only took a few hours to print all 1,700 copies.

So we hope you like the improved quality of the docu-ment you are reading. We're excited to have gotten the new printer in time to save the edition of The Villager.

Many thanks to Chuck from AFAX, to my neighbor Daniel and to the luck stars that aligned to make this all happen

so quickly and so well.
