PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE 2015

 E ndowi ng L i brar y E xc e l l en c e fo r To m or r ow

It is always a pleasure to look back on a year filled with positive developments, and 2014 is no exception.Last year, programming at the library jumped 15% compared to 2013. Attendance at child and teen eventsswelled by 11%. Such robust growth mirrors a sense of optimism in Duluth itself. People like to live here, and a thriving library is one reason.

Here is a sampling of the library’s 2014 events: Stories and finger plays for infants and toddlers; Storytime for

preschoolers; literacy programs (including computer literacy) for youths and adults; Kaleidoscope programs forkids; Legos, magic, gift-making, art journaling; free movies. What do these events have in common? Theyenergized the community, and Foundation support helped to make them happen. That is why your giftshave made such a difference: With very few exceptions, the Foundation and the Friends of the Library provide the only steadyfunding for library programming.

This is a responsibility and an opportunity that the Foundation gladly embraces. The Foundation annually gives up to 80% of endowment earnings to the library. In 2014, that equaled $17,716.38. It gave another $15,036.12 for materials and programs.  Awith your generosity, the Foundation gave $32,752.50 to the library in 2014. In addition, this was another strong year forendowment, which grew in 2014 to $1,034,020 and has more than doubled since 2008.

In 2014, books and materials were added to the library. The teen space underwent a beautiful transition. The monthly meetingTeen Anime & Manga Club continued to flourish. “One Book, One Community” attracted 1,185 participants. And you made tpossible. Your gifts to the Foundation ranged from a few dollars to several thousands of dollars. Representative in her generif not her age—was 101-year-old Katharine Coventry, whose memoir graces the library shelves and whose total gifts of $10,00given across 17 years, puts her influence and generous spirit everywhere in the library.

We hope you will join us at our upcoming 4th-annual fundraiser, Learning & Libations at the Library, on September 19We have planned a festive and informative evening in the library. We hope to see you there!

Your generosity supports a wonderful library in our community. Thank you!

Dan D’Allaird, President, Duluth Library Foundation

“Good night sweet prince.” With these words from Hamlet , Rebecca Killen Hawthorne endedthe eulogy for her father, attorney John Killen, in July 2013. It was a fitting farewell for a manwho relished the works of Shakespeare, referencing them often, and who loved the Englishlanguage that Shakespeare enriched by his writing. “He was known to have quotedShakespeare in his closing arguments in court,” recalled his widow, ElaineKillen, with a smile. The highlight of a visit to London was the side triphe and Elaine made to Stratford-on-Avon, to see a performanceof The Tempest ; in his library, John had a collection ofbooks by and about the Bard.

So when Elaine considered how to honor thememory of her late husband, one of the ideasthat suggested itself was to add his nameto the William Shakespeare section of theDuluth Library Foundation donor wall atthe library. She timed her gift to arriveon May 4, 2014—on what would havebeen his 87th birthday. Her giftwas added to the permanentendowment, where it willcontinue to benefit thelibrary into perpetuity.

“He lived a life framed byShakespeare,” said Elaine.“It is nice to see his

name by that of WilliamShakespeare.”

A BOLD REDESIGN OF THE TEEN SPACEIn 2014, teens started showing up at the libraryin increasing numbers, and the youth librarianswere delighted to welcome them. But thelibrarians soon realized they had a problem:There was not enough furniture in the teenspace to accommodate the number of teenswho were coming to the library to read, dohomework, and hang out with friends.

Discussions with Library Manager Carla Powers,Youth Services Coordinator Susan Schumacher, and the Youth Services staff brought about anidea: to re-design the teen space, bringing inlime green and sky blue furniture, a vibrant newcarpet, and an edgy mural that would identify itas a place specifically for teens. Once the idea was conceived and a budget developed,

the Foundation sought partners to make it happen. The Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation andthe Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation bothembraced the vision for creating an inviting space dedicated to teens. Partnering with the DuluthLibrary Foundation, they made the idea of a new Teen Space a reality.

As the school year began, the new area was revealed to the public—to the delight of teenagers—at a press conference featuring Mayor Don Ness, Joan Gardner-Goodno, Executive Director ofthe Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, and Co-Chairs of the Duluth Legacy Endowment Fund NickLansing and Jenn Ryan.

Harbor City International School senior Sara Walsh, who was at the unveiling, said, “I’ve beencoming here since, like, sixth grade, so I’ve seen it go from worn-down couches with holes in theto this.” She added, “I’m so happy.”
