A unique platform that seeks to bring students and speakers from around the world to engage in dialogue and investigation of the most current issues on the topic of US-China relations. The conference has grown immensely over the past three years of its existence. Originally a spark of an idea between two UNC students and two Duke students in the fall of 2010, the conference has tripled in size, attracted increasingly impressive speakers, and has identified itself as the premier collegiate US-China relations conferences of the American South.

It was my honor this year to be the director of the third annual Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit. Over three days, over a hundred delegates from across the country and over 20 speakers engaged in critical dialogue on a number of topics pertaining to US-China relations. Unlike other similar academic conferences on US-China relations, the China Leadership Summit strives to not only provide a platform for intellectual exchange but also foster the next generation of leaders in world affairs. Furthermore, as important as these kinds of conferences are, often the most valuable collaborations, partnerships, and friendships happen outside the confines of the conference. To that end, our wonderful and hardworking CLS team has put together this pamphlet containing the contact information of all CLS 2013 delegates. Our alumni network also extends through all three years of CLS so far on Facebook (join the group “Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit”). Now as alumni of CLS, I sincerely hope that you all will be able to continue the friendships made at the conference, and I know I will see many of you again whether in the US, China, or otherwise.

I am filled with happiness and great hope that there will be continued interest and sustainable support for this conference. With the rise of China over the past three decades, I am confident that the study of US-China relations will remain an active on in the years to come.

“Beyond the speakers’ insights, I also had the opportunity to meet and get to know my fellow delegates, many of whom were Chinese international students. I got to hear about what it was like growing up behind the “Great Firewall” and their perspective on island disputes at CLS. Attending CLS also made me realize two things. First, there is a significant disconnect between the Asian American population and our knowledge about what’s going on in Asia. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, our cultural connections with Asia could potentially give us a leg up in understanding the complicated relationship between the United States and many Asian nations..” — Chang Sun, Ampersand Magazine
