Page1 DUG Permian Basin 2013 Show Report The technological transformation that created the shale gas boom is about to do the same for tight oil. And that technological revolution is bringing new life to historic oil provinces with the Permian Basin being first and foremost on the list of the “next big thing” in oil and gas. That was the message to more than 2,500 attendees at Hart Energy’s DUG Permian Conference and Exhibition in historic Fort Worth, Texas in early April. More than three-dozen speakers provided insight into the renaissance underway in West Texas and the southeastern corner of New Mexico. Upstream participants shared news of expanding programs targeting the horizontal Wolfcamp shale in the Midland Basin, which Pioneer Natural Resources CEO and keynote speaker Scott Sheffield, indicated could produce up to 20 billion barrels in recoverable oil. Apache Corp.’s John Christmann outlined the progress underway in prospecting the extent of the nascent Cline shale play along the Permian’s eastern shelf. On the midstream side, a lively roundtable discussion entitled “Riding the Rails” spurred an in-depth discussion of the industry’s growing use of rail to move crude as well as other products. The question- and-answer exchange with four rail-industry leaders lasted well past the allotted time. The track also featured an update on midstream infrastructure in the Delaware Basin and the impact of the Permian’s growing gas production on midstream operators. The subtext behind it all is that a tight focus on well costs is necessary to make tight oil work long-term in the Permian Basin. “Right now in these resource plays it’s all being driven by execution – getting your costs down,” noted Richard Little, vice president for the southern division of EP Energy. DUG Permian provided conference attendees an in-depth look at how stacked formation tight oil plays are going to impact the oil and gas industry for some time to come. That impact may involve a gradual deflation in oil prices as rising domestic production overcomes declining global demand. If that’s the case, the new technology that is bringing renewed life to the Permian Basin will be an integral part of how operators compete on a sustainable basis going forward. A complete reawakening – new-generation technology and fresh targets
The Permian Basin has a long and storied past, and now it is in the midst of a complete reawakening. The basin's rich hydrocarbon reservoirs are being tapped with new-generation technology and its world-class source rocks offer fresh targets. DUG Permian Basin delivers a high-level review of continental and global oil and gas dynamics, in-depth sessions on the hottest Permian unconventional plays, and special midstream tracks that focus tightly on the dramatic changes in the region's infrastructure.
On behalf of Hart Energy, we thank all those who have participated over the past four years and we invite you back next year. Mark your calendars for the 5th Annual DUG Permian Basin Conference and Exhibition. The dates are May 20 – 22, 2014 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
