• A pair of binoculars, spotting scope, .sturdy footwear and a well illustratedfield guide are the basics for naturewatching.

• Most wildlife sightings occur at dawn anddusk when animals are the most active.

• Limit your walking to trails, blinds,viewing towers and boardwalks ..

• Respect wildlife by avoiding nestingareas and reduce disturbance byobserving from a distance.

east and follow the grid road for 2.4 km. and stopwhere it bisects Stalwart National Wildlife Area. Viewwildlife from the road. Best viewing is recommendedfrom late April to early July for breeding waterfowland grassland birds. Ducks Unlimited Canada andthe Canadian Wildlife Service manage wetlandconservation projects within the 3,750 acre NationalWildlife Area.

From Regina, drive 55 km. west on Hwy. 1. ExitHwy. 301 and drive north 21 km. to junction withHwy. 202. Enter Buffalo Pound Provincial Park andfollow signs to Nicolle Flats Nature Area. Thispopular outdoor education site offers best viewingfrom mid-April through September. Walk theinterpretive boardwalk through a cattail marsh orfollow a trail through the prairie grassland of theQu'Appelle River valley. Ducks Unlimited Canadaand Saskatchewan Environment and ResourceManagement manage the 900 acre habitat projectwith dykes and controls, nesting islands andplanted grassland. Viewers will see a diverse wildlifepopulation from breeding ducks like Canvasbackand Gadwall to Muskrat and White-tailed Deer.

Turn south and continue for 3.2 km. Last Mountain LakeNational Wildlife Area Headquarters are immediatelyeast. Access to all trails and facilities begin here. Viewwildlife from nature trails, a boardwalk, tower and a self-guided auto tour.Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Canadian Wildlife

Service manage wetland conservation projects withinthe 38,500 acre National Wildlife Area. Last MountainLake Migratory Bird Sanctuary was established in 1887and it is the oldest waterfowl refuge in North America.While this exceptional site offers wildlife viewing fromspring breeding through fall migration, the largestconcentration of ducks, geese, Sandhill Cranes and theendangered Whooping Crane are present from mid-August to November.

From Regina, travel 26 km. northwest on Hwy.11. Exit Hwy. 20 and drive to Craven. Proceedalong Hwy 20 for 6 km. and exit to the ProvincialPicnic Ground for access to the WildlifeManagement Area. Walk along the mowed dyke-top trail and view the 900 acre wetlandconservation project managed by DucksUnlimited Canada and SaskatchewanEnvironment and Resource Management. Bestwetland bird viewing is available during the springmigration and breeding period from late April tomid-July. A wide variety of ducks and grebes,including the Western Grebe are common on thisfloodplain marsh of the Qu'Appelle River valley.
