Welcome
I am delighted to welcome you to the 2019 edition of Dubai Arbitration Week.
Our programme this year is the biggest yet and reflects the diverse and thriving arbitration community in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region.
The week has been put together by some of the leading global arbitral bodies, organisations and practices that have operations or do business in the region, and includes over 40 conferences, symposia, working lunches/dinners, and networking opportunities. Most events are open to the public and free of charge. Thank you to all organisers for putting together a fantastic week!
Thank you also to our Strategic Partner, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) for its continued support. As a top ten global financial centre and the leading financial hub in the MEASA region, DIFC is the natural home for Dubai Arbitration Week.
I hope you enjoy hearing from some of the world’s leading arbitration practitioners and sharing your news and views on developments in the field of international commercial arbitration.

1pm – 2pm Speed networking and lunch – The proliferation of technology in international arbitration: an opportunity for change?
Format │ The proliferation of new, disruptive technologies and artificial intelligence in recent years
is having a profound impact on the legal sector, and, increasingly, dispute resolution. There are a wealth of opportunities that arise as a result of this; the opportunity to resolve disputes quickly and cost-effectively, such as automating tasks such as intensive document review or 'e-discovery', utilising machine learning to analyse complex issues such as liability and quantum. However, there are also a multitude of questions and challenges. How does artificial intelligence and machine learning effect the human decision-making process? Can machines issue arbitral awards? How can legislation appropriately govern advancing technologies? How can we ensure that this data is stored securely? Who will bear the cost and risk of these progressive technological services? This event will address the future of technology in arbitration and the challenges and opportunities that arise. The format will be similar to speed networking but will entail a series of small discussion groups, each assigned with a pre-determined topic and a facilitator to get the discussion going, with attendees rotating around different groups and topics throughout.
