Fall 2014

A year ago we kicked off the Together Campaign. Since then we have made tremendous progress towards reaching the goals of the campaign. Reaching these goals is critical to both our long and short term sustainability. The response by our Catholic Community made of our eight parishes as well as our stakeholders of alumni and friends has been wonderful! To date we have $12M towards our $19.2 goal committed! The three main components are listed below:

1. Trinity Elementary School: The Construction of Trinity Elementary School located in West Fargo that is primarily meant to serve the parishes of St. Benedict, Holy Cross and Blessed Sacrament.

2. Expansion of Shanley and Sullivan: Building the next phase of Shanley and Sullivan per the concepts at the time of the initial construction project.

3. Debt Reduction: Paying down debt from the original Shanley/Sullivan project continues to be a goal, over the past three years we have retired over $1.9M in higher interest debt.

The Deacon Newsletter is published by the JPII Catholic Schools, 5600 25th Street S, Fargo, ND 58104 • Volume #19 Issue #2

The central theme with the campaign has been that together as an 8 parish community, along with our alumni and friends, we can take concrete steps with these three components to make a lasting impact on the future of the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools Network. It is undeniable that completing these three goals will have a profoundly positive impact on our schools for years to come.

We continue to receive pledges and make connections with our supporters and feel that reaching the $19.2 million goal is achievable in the next year. The significance of this milestone would propel many aspects of our strategic plan including enrollment increases, increased compensation for teachers, debt reduction, increased offerings for our students and most importantly accessible and affordable Catholic education for

our community’s three-year-old’s to seniors.

Trinity School is well underway. We are very confident the doors will open in the fall of 2015 and welcome many new students and families into the JPII Schools. At our recent open house we welcomed 46 families who have showed interest in attending the school. There will be two more open

houses, one in January and one in April or May. The Trinity PTO will be forming in January. The principal position will be posted soon and

throughout the spring we will be adding staff as the enrollment dictates. Take a chance to drive by the construction site at 2820 Bluestem Drive in West Fargo. We have also provided some recent pictures of the project. The progress is ongoing so by the time this goes to print, the actual job site will have developed even more. The school includes 15 classrooms, a gymnasium, media center including a computer lab, and art and music rooms. We are proud to be able to offer a state of the art facility to our families! Together! Building on our Tradition of Excellence cont.word about Catholic Education and the enduring lessons that come from a school focused on this mission, “The Mission of the Saint John Paul II Catholic Schools is to inspire exceptional student achievement by teaching the total

person and fostering the following of Christ in an environment guided by the Gospel spirit, as taught by the Catholic Church.”

Paying down the debt is something that we continue to make progress on each year. The less than 1% loan that we have is not a tremendous drain on our yearly budget and we feel that the debt to equity ratio we have is responsible, but we realize that being debt free would allow us to better focus on our strategic plan goals.

The Shanley/Sullivan additions are currently being prepared to send out for bid to architects. We have $1M in the bank towards this project that will ultimately cost between $2 and $3.2M. As we move forward with the plans that will focus on sports, activities and commons space will likely include: varsity locker rooms, indoor/outdoor concession stand, speech and debate rooms, larger fitness areas, band rooms, choir rooms, and space for the drama department. We are ahead of our timeline on moving forward

with renderings, and believe that this next phase is an key part of providing our education to meet the needs of educating the total person as spelled out in our mission.

In addition to these projects we are also continuing to build up our endowment. The endowment saw a

significant increase this past year, and we will continue to work with supporters to be sure that the endowment remains an interest area for people looking to invest in the future of Catholic Education! Through a recent estate gift we were able to add $500,000 to the endowment.

Fargo - The beginning of another high school sports season has been anything but normal for Fargo Shanley activities director Randy Nelson.

Earlier this month, Nelson was diagnosed with small cell carcinoma cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Since the diagnosis, a deluge of support for Nelson, 52, has been coming from many individuals in the Shanley community, the Fargo-Moorhead area and across the state.

“It’s been humbling,” said Nelson, who has served as Shanley’s activities director since 2007. “The amount of outpouring in prayers and people bringing by cards has been amazing.

“With my job, I get to reach out to a lot of people around the state, and it is very heartwarming the support my family and I have been getting. People have called just to say they are thinking of me. It just shows you the type of individuals we have in our schools across the state and in the Fargo-Moorhead area.”

Nelson, his wife, Dorian and their daughter Gabby, live in West Fargo. Their son Brandon attends Minnesota State Moorhead and their daughter Nicole lives in Chicago.

A benefit for Nelson has been organized for Sept. 21 at Scheels Arena. The event, which runs from 3-7 p.m., is a pulled pork feed and silent auction with free-will donations accepted at the door.

Nelson is still working five to six hours each day

and said his duties have been concentrated on the administrative end such as scheduling practice times, lining up transportation and arranging for officials.

“Tuesday was as close to a normal day as I have had in a while,” Nelson said. “I came into the office and worked until 4 p.m. I got a chance to watch volleyball practice and stopped by to visit with the football coaches. I went home, ate and drove over to Fargo South to see our swimming team practice, and I got to watch the first half of the Shanley-South boys soccer match. It was a great day, and it was nice to see all the people and let them know how I’m doing.”

Each athletic team at Shanley has designed a team T-shirt in support of Nelson, an effort organized by track and field coach Barry Anderson.

The T-shirts will say “Team Nelson” and have another message that is sport specific. For example, the cross country team’s shirt will have “Outrun Cancer” on them.

Our Beloved FacultyThe Deacons football team will be sporting “Tackle Cancer” shirts in addition to another sign of support for Nelson.

“We have put ‘RN’ stickers on all our helmets for Randy Nelson” Shanley football coach Rod Oksendahl said. “There is a lot of support right now for Randy. He is a great guy and a great AD. He really loves Shanley and everything about it.”

Shanley Superintendent Michael Smith and other administrators at the school have been picking up the rest of Nelson’s duties.

“I think it’s been very good for him to come in and work,” Smith said. “We’d be lost without him right now, and he definitely is still leading the way with the work he is doing.”

Last Sunday, Nelson addressed parents and students at Shanley’s annual fall sports kickoff barbecue. Smith said Nelson assured everyone he would fight with everything he had.

“I feel the Lord has put me in this situation to get the message out to everyone that they need to enjoy every day to its fullest,” Nelson said. “When you go to bed each night have no regrets and know that you did everything possible that day to enjoy it.

“That’s how I’m trying to live my life right now,” Nelson added. “Live it one day at a time. Enjoy every day and enjoy every opportunity I get to spend with my family and enjoy every day I get to spend at school with the students.”

Fargo - Arriving at Nativity Church for a Saturday morning interview, I find Rebecca Raber, Shanley High School choir director, in the sanctuary just to the right of the altar and large, metal crucifix that dangles midair.

Natural light falls from ceiling windows, softly illuminating the music corner where she and a student are rehearsing.

As I slip unnoticed into the back pew, the student plays a moving piano rendition of “A City Called Heaven,” trying to decide whether he’ll accompany or sing it in his final performance of the song at an upcoming concert.

“It’s up to you; just let me know,” Raber says, understanding the weight of his decision. He’s a senior, after all, and this song has become something of an endeared theme to the choir.

As he plays, Raber begins singing, her back to me, and I find her voice hauntingly beautiful.

I’m a little embarrassed by the tears dripping down my cheeks, but there’s no stopping them now.

Our Beloved FacultyProcess, not performance“Do you miss singing?”

It’s the first question I ask. I’ve often wondered if artists who teach feel the loss of not performing as much themselves.

“No, I really don’t,” she says. “I’m a very nervous performer. Maybe it’s tied to my wanting to get everything right all the time.”

Besides, she loves the process, the planning, even the rehearsals. “That’s the fun for me,” Raber says.

During a phone interview later, her husband, Michael, affirms what seems a rather unique drive for someone so musically gifted.

“The teacher part of her wants to keep working and molding the kids,” he says, “so the performing part isn’t the pinnacle, and I really admire that about her.”

Her sweetheart from their University of Jamestown days (then Jamestown College), Michael knows well how much she puts into her work, including summers poring over potential pieces, all tailor-chosen for the coming year’s unique voices.

This strong work ethic emerged during her childhood on a farm near Pisek, N.D., where she was raised the fourth of five children.

“I tease her about colored pens and notecards and files,” Michael adds. “But I could learn a lot from her in terms of organization.”

Wooing young soulsRaber started down the road of music in eighth grade as a trombone player and vocalist.

“I took about a year of piano, but I was terrible,” she says.

The music program at her school was almost nonexistent until Darla Sheldon, an instructor from Park River, walked in and saved the day, greatly impressing a young student known then as Becky Lovcik.

“She basically came in and started everything from scratch,” Raber says. “Maybe that’s why that kind of thing doesn’t scare me. I love building programs.”

She also recalls when, preparing for a regional music competition in high school, a neighboring director noticing her nerves said, “Just say a prayer, open your mouth and let the song come out.”

“Even then I knew that was something special,” Raber says. “And I thought, ‘Of course! Why have I not realized before how these things are connected?’ ”

Ever since, she’s been keenly aware of the tie-in between music and spirituality, which is evident in all kinds of music, not just sacred music, she says.

Our Beloved Facultyspirituality in your life or not, you are still a soul. And I think there’s a way God taps you on the shoulder through music that makes you stop in your moment,” she says.

A beloved instructorRaber says she enjoys bringing disparate people together and helping them produce something beautiful that they could not have accomplished as individuals.

Though she’s taught at the college level, too, she finds the richest, most fulfilling opportunities in younger grades.

“In middle and high school they are still young enough that you are just opening up the world of music to them.”

Nick Kasper, a 2010 Shanley graduate, first had Raber as an instructor in sixth grade, and credits her for having inspired him to pursue music in college.

“She helped us see that music can have a profound impact on us as individuals, and she used music to help us express ourselves and profess our faith with all the different texts we sang,” he says.

Bethany Loock, a Shanley junior, says Raber encourages her students to sing from the heart, in part by taking time to really teach them the meaning of the songs they sing.

“It’s easy for us to be excited about it when she’s so passionate about it herself.”

A gift to others, tooBut the students aren’t the only ones who admire Raber.

Maria Hennen, mother of two Shanley choir students, Alex and Hannah, recently volunteered as a chaperone for the group’s spring tour to New York City. What she witnessed only fortified conclusions drawn before the trip.

“She’s the perfect embodiment of why some families choose St. John Paul II schools,” Hennen says. “She’s allowed to use her beautiful soul and teach the kids ways they can listen to Christ through song and to pray through song...And you just can’t put a price tag on that.”

Raber’s expertise allows students to receive more of a college-level experience in high school, she adds. “And her soul is so beautiful and natural. It’s not pretentious in any way. It just beautifully flows out of her.”

But Raber squirms at compliments. She wants it to be about the students, she says, and quickly points out a few imperfections.

For example, though she’s not one to raise her voice, she admits to having mastered her scrutinizing eye – “the look” – in order to return order to a boisterous class.

She’s also very aware of the jabs students make at her propensity for sharing quotes and other expressions of wisdom. A recent “top 10 list” in the school newspaper noted, “You know you’re at Shanley if you’re learning more life lessons in choir than you do in actual life.”

Raber just giggles along, knowing someday they’ll see how well those life lessons have held and realize the profundity of the gift of music.

“There’s nothing like when everybody’s on the same page and you start rehearsal and all of a sudden it’s dismissal time, and you don’t know where the last 50 minutes have gone because you’re in it together,” she says. “It’s the most magical thing.”

Class of 1954 (60 year Reunion)By: R. Tracy Myers ‘54

The Shanley High School graduation class of 1954 recently held their 60th reunion. Twenty four classmates and some of their spouses were in at-tendance. They traveled from Alaska, California, Connecticut, South Carolina, Tennessee, Oregon and many areas in-between. The three day reunion culminated in a Memorial Mass, celebrated by Fr. Charles Lacroix in the new Shanley High School’s Presentation Chapel. We remembered and prayed for the twenty six classmates who have gone to their heavenly reward.

The Shanley Class of 1964 gathered on August 21st and 22nd, 2014 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to celebrate their 50th class reunion. Thursday night was a celebration at the Detroit Lakes Country Club, where all

enjoyed a wonderful gathering of friends, socializing and reliving many high school memories. A class photo was taken that evening. Friday events consisted of golf in the morning, and lunch at Zorbaz Restaurant in

Detroit Lakes. The evening ended with a sit down dinner on the porch at the Fireside Restaurant on Detroit Lake. Friendships were renewed and many memories shared, a reunion we will all remember.

Reunion Re-Cap:

Class of 1984 (30 year Reunion)By: Cherie Finneman ‘84

Our reunion began Friday night at Usher’s in Moorhead. We had the patio reserved and thankfully the weather was beautiful. We enjoyed wonderful appetizers, seeing each other again, and alot of stories and laughter, The staircase became a popular posing area of photos. Saturday a few people went to Shooting Star Casino, another small group toured the school and attended mass at St. Anne and Joachim church. Saturday night we gathered at the upper level of the Pickled Parrot (the old American Legion building downtown). Our very own Barb Dufault Torgerson (owns Classic Cakes & Catering) provided wonderful appetizers and desserts. Overall out of 114 of us, approximately 54 of the 1984 classmates attended at least one night of our reunion weekend. Thank you Shanley for the door prizes you provided as well as the picture boards.

We had about 40 classmates at the Friday night gathering. A golf scramble on Saturday and lunch that followed. Saturday night we packed into a room at Toscana for dinner. Lots of fun!

On Friday evening, we gathered at Fargo Billiards and Gastropub for drinks and conversa-tion. It was a beautiful night to spend some time out on the patio and to catch up. Saturday afternoon, families gathered at Rendezvous Park for a picnic and time to relax and let the kids play. There were over 30 children in attendance! On Saturday night, a sit down dinner was served on the 16th floor of the Radisson. The view of the sun setting over downtown Fargo was beautiful and a good backdrop for many pictures. Over 1/3 of our class attended the reunion (22 classmates) and many spouses were there too. We enjoyed reminiscing about high school and talking about what we are all doing now. Thanks to everyone who attended the reunion and to those of you who were unable to make it, we missed you!

Vibrant, colorful tattoos cover Steve Smedshammer’s arms. Oversized, exaggerated earrings stretch his earlobes. A scratchy beard covers his face. By appearance alone, some might label Steve a hipster, or alternative. Few might be surprised to learn he plays guitar in a metal band. But, Steve is so much more than what meets the eye.

You don’t know by looking that Stevo, as he prefers to be called, is a recent pre-med graduate of Concordia College. At age 30, he and his new bride are expecting their first child. Between attending school, working full-time and playing in two bands, he also regularly volunteers his time at local non-profit organizations, including Hospice of the Red River Valley.

“It’s not something I advertise,” Stevo said, humbly. “And, it’s not something I do just to put on my resume.” He believes by getting involved, and having well-rounded experiences, the “payouts” are exponential.

Stevo was introduced to Hospice of the Red River Valley while attending Concordia College. There, in his Biomedical Ethics class, a speaker from Hospice addressed the class. “I thought, to be a volunteer, you had to have certain prerequisites or medical background,” Stevo shared. “When I learned I could join an organization and immediately make a contribution, I was sold. I knew that same day I would apply as a volunteer.”

While some people are intimidated by the idea of being a hospice volunteer, Stevo quickly relaxed into the role. He made an instant connection with his first patient, Joe*. They bonded through a shared love of music and spend their visits listening to Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and “Americana” style music. “Joe

asked me to sing to him once, but after years of scream-singing in a metal band, he hasn’t asked again,” Stevo said with a laugh.

As a musician who plays 16 instruments, including guitar, accordion, ukulele, cello, melodica and more, Stevo was the just person to help Joe achieve his goal of learning how to play guitar before he died. And so they began lessons. When the guitar became too much for Joe to handle, they switched to ukulele.

“Joe almost nailed a three minute song. It was so rewarding to see him pull it off,” Stevo described with a smile, recalling a favorite moment with his new friend. “He’s normally pretty self-deprecating, but after that song, he

actually complimented himself. That was a proud moment for both of us. We celebrated with a high-five.”

Whether strumming his guitar and chatting, or sitting at a bedside during a Pathway visit, Stevo is a natural.

“When we received Stevo’s application and spoke with him, it was obvious to us that he has a wonderful, giving spirit,” Deb Kluck, manager of clinical development – volunteer services, said. “Stevo is not our ‘typical’ volunteer, and we’re thrilled about that. We need all types of people to help make our patients’ end-of-life experiences fulfilling. Variety is the spice of life, even at the end of life.”

“Most people think they could never be a hospice volunteer. I think if more people gave it a try, they’d be surprised,” Stevo explained. “If you enjoy talking with your grandpa, grandma, parents, aunts or uncles, having a conversation,

just being present with people, you can be a hospice volunteer. It’s not bleak; it’s actually an overwhelmingly positive experience.”

Being a hospice volunteer has given Stevo a new perspective on life and an enhanced appreciation for his health. Volunteering with Hospice has also taught him a lot about time. “Sometimes you just need to be still, sit down and savor the quiet moments,” he explained. “People don’t just sit anymore.”

For Stevo, the rush of helping someone else is addictive. He recalls, his grandmother was cared for by Hospice, and he remembers her nurse as “the lighthouse in the storm.”

“Sometimes, just knowing someone else cares, outside of the family, can be comforting,” Stevo said. “I can do that.”

Adrian Cihak passed away on October 1, 2014. Adrian was the husband of Elaine (Schwinden) Cihak (‘47) and the father of Damian Cihak (‘80) and the late Courtney Cihak (‘78) and Keith Cihak (‘81).

What’s Happening in our Schools

These JPII students (also, one alumna and one parent!) kept busy learning after the final school bell by participating in a summer photography camp, organized by Mrs. Raber. Students learned about photo composition, creativity, editing, lighting and camera function in the classroom, and then went out on photo shoots to put the concepts into action! All students created photo blogs so that the class could learn from each other.

For the second summer the JPII Schools offered a weeklong summer camp on rockets. Mr. Pochmara led two separate classes over the weeklong camp. This year’s camp had seventeen students participate in two separate groups. The first group consisted of students who were being introduced to the science of rockets. The second group was comprised of students who were in their second year at the camp. During the week the beginning group worked on building a model rocket kit with the goal of having two successful launches of their rockets at the end of the camp. These students also learned about

the basic science of rockets and how they fly. In addition these students learned about all of the exciting opportunities awaiting them in the private space industry.

The second group consisted of students who participated in the beginner camp last summer.

Most of these students will be competing in the Team America Rocketry Challenge or TARC during the next school year. The goal of the competition is to be able to launch a rocket designed and built by the students with a payload of one egg up to an altitude of 800 feet and have a total flight time of 48 seconds. A daunting challenge but one the students are certainly

ready to accept. To work on the skills necessary to be successful in the TARC competition the students spent the week each designing their own rockets using a computer aided design program, flight simulating it on the computer, building their unique designs, and ultimately flying them on launch day. To help prepare the students for the national TARC competition the students also had a competition during the camp. Each launch had three areas to score points on each launch. The first way for students to score points was to land their rockets within the designated flying

area with all parts intact. The second criteria was for the longest flight duration, and the third way to score points was by landing the rocket closest to the launch site. Each student was given the opportunity to launch their rocket two times. On the last day of the camp the students had a total of thirty-four successful launches! We hope to see even more out for the 2015 camp! Happy Launches!

Shanley Mission Trip 2014: PeruBy: Dr. Michael Smith, Superintendent


“If you don’t feel out of your comfort zone now, there is something wrong with you.”

This is the quote I heard one of our chaperones share with our Shanley students as we stepped off the bus upon arrival in Chimbote, Peru. For more than 40 years Father Jack Davis and Sister Peggy’s Mission Church have welcomed visitors from Fargo (and all over the world) into the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help located in the dusty barrios of Chimbote. Shanley families and have been part of the mission for years, but this year we hoped to reinvigorate the partnership with Chimbote with 25 members of the JPII Network participating in mission work. This June, 17 Shanley students along with chaperones flew from Fargo to Minneapolis to Atlanta to Lima and then boarded a bus with a destination of Chimbote, Peru. As the burden of traveling for such a long period began to take its toll on our excitement level, doubts began to sneak into our collective enthusiasm. Is this journey worth it? Will we make a difference in the lives of the people there? Will we be safe? What will we eat? Where will sleep?

All of those doubts melted away as we pulled into the streets of Chimbote with Sister Peggy as our personal guide. Sister Peggy had traveled the entire distance with us, returning to Peru after an extended time in the states. Having her in the bus gave as all reassurance. We clung to both her

spiritual guidance and practical knowledge of the area like a security blanket! As we pulled in to the mission she took the microphone for the bus and began to speak about different landmarks we past and how the people in Chimbote struggled to survive and better their lives for their children. As she spoke, I couldn’t help but think that experiencing this saintly woman’s model for our Shanley students was in itself enough to make the trip worthwhile and memorable, and by the time we left a week later our admiration and awe of her only grew. Many things struck me on the trip, but seeing Sister Peggy’s witness firsthand stands out as one of the most important experiences we had. Who leaves everything they know and moves to a dusty, dirty corner of the world area long forgotten by development? Day in and day out we all observed passersby after passerby stop and greet Sister Peggy with, “Hola Madre.” The joy in their eyes conveyed a love and a reverence reserved for people whose lives match deep convictions.

During the trip our students would build three homes with funds raised by the entire JPII Network, including Holy Spirit, Nativity, Sullivan and Shanley, but we returned home with much more than we gave. Our hearts were opened! The three point below are a distillation of the main thoughts and reflections shared by our students after the trip!

1. We Are Blessed: Upon returning to the states, we were tremendously aware of the blessings we have here in the US. The words, “To whom much is given much is expected,” took on

new meaning and we hope to live our lives with a new zeal for serving others.

2. True Joy: Understanding how happiness and joy are not linked to material possessions, but our relationship to each other and God through actions and prayer. As our students interacted with the children and families in Peru they were

amazed at how happy the people were despite living in difficult situations. We have one life that we have been given and we need to live that life as a gift to God by joyously using our talents to serve.

3. A lifetime Commitment: There is much work is left to do to try and relieve the suffering of others brought on by poverty. When we finished our homes the students looked around the sprawling poverty stricken barrio, they did

not want to stop. The problems of the world can indeed seem too big to tackle. It is certain that one week-long trip will not change Chimbote, but one week in Chimbote surely changed our eyes on how through a lifetime can continually impact others. The world will never look the same after returning from our trip. The world is not darker because we are filled with hope, we are not sad because our eyes have been opened, but blessed that we are aware of the need for us to engage in making the world a better place through prayer and hard-work!

It is the hope of our staff and students at Shanley that we will go to Peru each year. We want our service trips to Chimbote to become a permanent of our narrative of what it means to be a Deacon!

In January of 2015, Shanley High School will make history. Never before has an entire high school attended the annual March-For-Life in Washington, DC. Now, due to a national honor bestowed on the school, Shanley will be the first to do it!

The National March-for-Life Committee selected Shanley High School to carry the lead banner in January’s upcoming March-For-Life in our nation’s capital! This is a distinct honor. Of the thousands of pro-life groups throughout the

And so, the only appropriate response to this privilege is to take the entire high school to DC!

This is not the first

honor given to Shanley’s active Teens for Life group. Last year in 2013, the Students for Life of America Conference named Shanley the National Pro-Life High-School Group of the Year for its active pro-life leadership and witness throughout the year.

Each year, Shanley’s Teens for Life group ventures to DC for the March-for-Life, but this year has added significance: Shanley will lead over a half-million people down Constitution Avenue!

The March-for-Life Pilgrimage is more than just a field trip. It is an instrument God uses to transform our students and infuse them with the graces to be courageous leaders in their faith and in the pro-life movement.

You have the unique opportunity to see this for yourself. Recently, on Friday October 24th, Shanley Teens for Life sponsored its annual fundraiser “Cupcakes for Life” with keynote

speaker Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life. In additional, Shanley students gave their testimonials about how the March for Life has changed their lives.

This summer we were blessed with a significant estate gift from Charles Yirchott a Shanley Graduate from the year 1957. Mr. Yirchott’s gift of nearly $800,000 will leave a lasting impact on our Catholic Schools’ Community for years to come. His wishes were to, “Support scholarships and after-school sports, programs and clubs.” On August 27, the JPII Board of Directors approved the money with the following designations. First, $250,000 will be used to support the new Shanley/Sullivan addition as part of the Together! Campaign. The addition to the building is completely to support after-school sports, programs and clubs. The new building’s final drawings are not yet finalized, but will include varsity locker rooms, speech and debate room, expanded band and choir spaces and more space yet to be determined, but will likely house restrooms and a concession stand that can be accessed from outside/inside sporting events. The $250,000 amount is significant and something that will bring the completion of the project sooner than anticipated.

The remaining portion of the gift will be used for scholarships. The majority of the remaining money, $500,000, will go into our endowment and provide scholarships for years to come. This is a tremendous asset to our endowment. With the endowment nearing $600,000, Mr. Yirchott’s generous gift increases the endowment by 8%. These are the types of gifts that can transform our schools by keeping tuition affordable for more students and also help us to close the gap with teacher pay between our schools and the public schools in the area. Through we still have ground to cover, this gift will have a lasting impact on our schools. In addition, the remaining amount will be used for non-endowed scholarships for our admissions team to help retain and attract families.

To be sure Mr. Yirchott appreciated the role Catholic education played in his upbringing. Our mission of teaching the total person was clearly important to him, as he named outside of the classroom activities specifically in his will. We hope that his gift will encourage others to think

about how they can impact our schools with their gifts. Joelle Shewey, our Director of Alumni Relations had been in contact with Mr. Yirchott periodically over the last years. Our schools today are much like the schools of Sacred Heart Academy and Shanley on the north side from years ago. We are a school built on a mission that teaches students that they belong to something bigger than themselves and provides families with a community that supports its members in more ways than can be imagined.

40% Tax Credit – ND Senate Bill 2160 was signed into law during the 2011 legislative session, and provides for a 40% tax credit (a direct reduction in taxes) if gifts made

during the year equal or exceed $5,000 to a specific qualified endowment fund. The

maximum credits allowed to individuals are $10,000 or $20,000 (if a married couple filing

jointly). Therefore a married couple could give $50,000 to an endowment fund and be

eligible for the full $20,000 credit. The Catholic Development Foundation exists to provide

qualified endowment funds for Catholic entities, including Blessed John Paul II Catholic Schools.

JP II Schools Endowments exist for general JP II School support, Shanley High School support, educator pay, educator bonuses, and scholarships for direct student/family

assistance.

Charles Robert Yirchott, Jr. (Chuck) Resident of San Carlos Passed away quietly on April 17, 2014 at Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, California, following a brief battle with brain

cancer. Born in Fargo, North Dakota, January 6, 1940, to Rob and Mary Adamchuk Yirchott,

he attended Fargo’s Shanley High School, where he was active in sports and singing groups,

graduating in 1957. He attended the University of North Dakota, transferring to the University

of Denver, where he graduated in 1962 with a degree in Business Administration, Finance major. The West Coast called, and following

commencement he moved to Los Angeles, in the employ of Bank of America, beginning a career

span of 33 years. Initially involved in branch banking and consumer finance, he became a domestic corporate lender, which evolved to

corporate lending in Tokyo Branch in the early 1970’s. After two years back in Los Angeles in credit administration, Chicago offered a new

location and more corporate lending to Midwest clients. The Bank’s holding company parent in

San Francisco was next with responsibilities for administration of the nonbanking subsidiaries, a very diverse group of activities. Three years

later the Bank entered into a joint venture agreement with 17 Korean businesses to form

a new commercial bank in Seoul, KorAm Bank, with a goal of assisting the government in

introducing western banking practices and the corporate nomad was selected to be the

Bank of America’s senior representative. The call to be global head of the internal credit examination function came during the mid 1980’s, a challenging but rewarding time in

the Bank’s history. He retired in 1995 and spent parts of the next ten years doing contract

work for accounting and financial-related companies, which took him on assignments to

Seoul, Singapore, Istanbul, Agana, and myriad locations throughout California. In 1991, he met

San Francisco native Nancy Noren, whom he married in 2001 after mutually enduring ten years of long-distance courtship. The couple enjoyed dining out, golf and travel together, and their home date nights with favorite TV programs. Nancy died on January 2, 2014.

Chuck is survived by his brother-in-law John Noren and his wife Trudy (Lindsay and Jay) of Marin County, sister-in-law Arlene Appleton of Washington State, (Will and Scott), and several

cousins in the upper Midwest. Viewing and visitation will be at Cypress Lawn Cemetary,

Colma, California, on Friday, April 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. The service will be at 11 a.m., followed by internment and reception at Cypress Lawn

Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Wounded Warriers

Project.

The annual Memorial Mass at Shanley High School was originated in GROW (Greatness Requires Our Willingness) 39 years ago for members of the Shanley family who had passed away and as an opportunity to raise funds for Shanley High School through Memorials. This Mass is said each year to remember and pray for St. John Paul II Catholic Schools Network and Shanley High School alumni and friends who were memorialized during the preceding year. This Memorial Mass is attended by family members of those who have been memorialized and Shanley High School students and staff. The Mass exercises our duty and dignity to care for the souls of the faithful departed as part of the JPII Mission”…to teach the total person and foster the following of Christ in an environment inspired by the Gospel Spirit , as taught by the Catholic Church”

• RED + WHITE PARTNER - $500: Cart sponsor at the Orv Kelly Shanley Scramble and a full page advertisement in the Shanley Dinner Auction Catalog.

• BRONZE PARTNER - $1,000: Red + White package plus: Business name and logo in the Deacon Newsletter (semi-annual publication) sent to all Parents, Alumni & Friends of JPII and our Annual Report publication. Business name and logo on the JPII website and the Shanley Alumni website on a rotating basis. Business name and logo in the Weekly E-Newsletter, sent to parents on a rotating basis. Shield Sponsorship of the Shanley Dinner Auction (includes table signage and full page colored advertisement in Auction catalog).

• SILVER PARTNER - $2,500: Bronze Partner package plus: Business name and logo in the JPII Schools Family Di-rectory. Business name and logo in the program for the Mike & Karen Hofer Deacon Award and Hall of Fame Awards Banquet. Deacon Sponsorship of the Shanley Dinner Auction (including business logo in Live Auction video presenta-tion).

• GOLD PARTNER - $5,000: Bronze & Silver Partner packages plus: Signage in Sid Cichy Stadium. Grand Sponsor-ship of the Shanley Dinner Auction (including a full table of eight at the Auction with premium wine service).

• PLATINUM PARTNER - $10,000: Bronze, Silver & Gold Partner packages plus: Premiere Sponsorship of the Orv Kelly Shanley Scramble (includes recognition and promotion as the Scramble’s Premiere Sponsor in all materials lead-ing up to & during the golf tournament, signage and a team of 6 golfers).

• DIAMOND PARTNER - $15,000: Bronze, Silver & Gold Partner packages plus: School bus advertising on all JPII school buses that shuttle our students between schools twice daily as well as in-town and out-of-town activities.
