WELCOME TO DSTWelcome to Desert Stages Theatre, and thank you for joining us at this performance of Jonathan Larson’s TICK, TICK...BOOM! The talented casts that will perform in this show over the next two weekends include some DST “regulars” - familiar faces that you have seen here before - as well as actors who are brand new to the DST stage. Thank you to co-directors Mark and Lynzee 4man who were the natural choices to co-direct (and music direct and choreograph) a rock musical that represents our first teen/young adult production in more than a year. They have worked tirelessly with an extremely skilled team of actors, designers, and crew members to bring you this beautiful show, and everyone involved has enjoyed the process very much.

We continue our COVID-19 safety protocols and enhanced cleaning measures to keep you and our actors safe. In return, we ask that you kindly wear your mask the entire time you are in the theatre, and stay in your assigned seat. If you wish to meet with your friends or cast members after the show, please arrange to do so in the food court area of the shopping mall. We’re still social-distancing at Desert Stages. Safety First! Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

Thank you again for your support of live theatre and for your attendance at this performance of TICK, TICK...BOOM! Whether you are seeing your 100th show or your first at DST, you are a valued member of the Desert Stages Theatre community, and we appreciate you more than you could ever know!

Ellen VersenExecutive Director

DIRECTOR'S LETTERTICK, TICK...BOOM! originally began life as an autobiographical rock monologue performed by Jonathan Larson and was formerly called “Boho Days.” During the time of writing the piece in 1990, Jonathan was turning 30 and was working at the Moondance Diner whilst trying to establish himself as a writer in New York. In 2001 the rock monologue was adapted into a three-actor musical by David Auburn which premiered at the Jane Street Theatre.

Jonathan started out as an actor, though he had a great passion for music. His decision to change paths came after meeting his hero, Stephen Sondheim, who told him there were a lot more starving actors out there than starving composers. Sondheim later became Jonathan's mentor and is mentioned a number of times in Tick, Tick...BOOM! (though Jon dare not speak his name...) The show's song "Sunday" is a humorous homage to Sunday in the Park with George. There are many other Sondheim references in the song "Why," including a tritone made famous by West Side Story. I wonder how many references you can find?

Music was important to Jonathan from an early age. As a child, he was taken to see a children's version of Puccini's opera La Bohème. From that seed, an idea would slowly germinate over twenty years and grow into the Broadway sensation RENT.

On January 25 1996, the day of the last dress rehearsal for RENT, Larsondied from a foot-long tear in his aorta. Later in 1996, his sister acceptedthe Pulitzer Prize on his behalf. RENT became a Broadway sensation and attracted fans around the United States and the world. Though nothing would bring Larson back to life, death could not silence the effect of his work.

To all of you aspiring young composers and dreamers out there, what if Jonathan had not followed his dreams? We never would have gotten RENT, Superbia or TICK, TICK...BOOM! NEVER give up on yourself and always follow your dreams!

We have had simply the BEST time working with these six talented young people. They have poured their hearts and souls into this show, and we are so excited to share this beautiful piece with you.

Mark and Lynzee 4Man
