DSI Column Facts A good rule of thumb is a column should be 1 wide (or diameter) for every foot in height An architecturally correct column is 1 wide (diameter) for every foot in height. 4 and 6 columns exist for price purposes Aluminum columns do not taper. Aluminum column flutes run the full length of the column Do not sell aluminum columns for historical preservation projects. The flutes for historic columns end prior to the base and capital 30. Installation Columns need to be attached to the surface and header with L clips or hurricane mounts A balcony cannot be attached or hung on the outside face of a column A balcony beam may be placed inside a properly sized column, if approved by architect or engineer A small hole can be created in the column for an electrical outlet Railing can be attached directly to the column with self tapping stainless steel screws Do not pour concrete inside the column Do not install on dirt 31. Installation Aluminum columns can be installed as a decorative covering for structural weight bearing members Aluminum columns can be installed with out structural weight bearing members in dead load and vertical load installations. Live loads and lateral loads require additional structural weight bearing members A live load may be defined as a second story deck supported by aluminum columns. The walking surface and movement would define this as a live load A lateral load (carport or gazebo) would be defined as a load that would have potential lateral movement with no attachment to a stationary building 32. Installation An eccentric load is a load applied unevenly to all column staves. This will cause staves to bend and bow under load A concentric load is when weight is applied evenly to all columns staves Load bearing plates are available A properly installed column will: Carry a concentric load top and bottom Staves at the base may be cut to match porch slope All staves will be the same length unless porch slopes Joist/Header to be in contact with all staves Columns will be attached at the top and bottom 33.
