Our Founder

Padmabhushan (Late) Pujya Shri Karamshibhai J Somaiya

(16.05.1902 – 09.05.1999) “Neither do I long for Kingdom, nor for heaven, nor do I desire to be

free from rebirth, I only wish to remove the sufferings of all beings afflicted by pain”

Padmabhushan Pujya (late) Shri. Karamshi J Somaiya, an entrepreneur, philanthropist and a great visionary, by the dint of hard work and singular devotion ,totally dedicated himself to the services of humanity. Endowed with a sharp business prowess, a balanced perspective and a social bent of mind, Karamshibhai set up the K J Somaiya Trust in 1951. Later, he laid the foundation for Somaiya Vidyavihar in 1959. This has grown into large educational complex with 34 institutions catering to diverse fields of education in Science and Humanities, Engineering, Education, Medicine, Management, Mass Communication etc. with more than 26000 students and 1200 teaching faculty. It was a vision of Shri. K J Somaiya that the modern professional education must remain true to the spirit of Indian culture. He envisaged the Somaiya group of Education as the 'Nalanda' of learning where students and teachers would live in an integral and spiritual fellowship. His life exemplified all lofty principles which came out of sheer practice for the betterment and upliftment of our society. At the age of 60, he relinquished the leadership of his economic enterprise to his son, Dr S K Somaiya. Unto his last day, he was true to his ideal commitment "what you receive from society, give it back multifold".
