introductionThe DSA is the only organisation that represents the interests of companies involved in the drilling and sawing industry and is committed to improving standards within the industry by establishing better codes of safe working practice, education and training.
mission statementThe DSA’s mission is to promote the work of professional drilling and sawing contractors by highlighting the many advantages of cutting concrete with diamond tools, which include precision cutting within the shortest time scale, reduced noise, dust and debris and maintenance of structural integrity.
DSA members benefit from approved operator training courses and the adoption of national safety standards and working codes of practices, as well as affiliation with other recognised construction industry national associations. The DSA also provides a forum for members to meet within an organised framework to discuss and share their ideas on new technologies and the future development of the industry as a whole.
qualityQuality lies at the heart of the DSA’s
philosophy and members exercise the highest standards of business practice and
workmanship at all times.DSA membership is not automatic, and
applicants are subject to strict vetting procedures.
Not only are members vetted on application, they are continually monitored to meet the
high standards demanded. Vetting comprises of a detailed documentary and
Financial review. On being accepted, members agree to abide by the Code of Practice and conditions of membership
environmentalcommitment
Sustainability and environmental impact are major considerations when specifying, manufacturing and installing products in the workplace. DSA requires its members to confirm their commitment to protecting the environment, and is proactive in providing information and guidance on how best to achieve this. Its supplier members in particular are leading the way in seeking techniques and developing systems that provide high environmental and social value.

Drilling and Sawing Professionals
Today architects, engineers, general con-
tractors and government officials in the
construction and renovation industry can take
advantage of the advances in technology by
employing a specialized drilling and sawing
contractor who utilizes diamond cutting
techniques to ensure the success of any
project.
The specialty contractors who perform the
concrete drilling and sawing services are
experts in their field. Concrete cutting con-
tractors are professionals who can recommend
the best techniques and equipment for the
most cost-effective cutting, and are better
prepared to bring projects in on time and
within budget. In addition, they have the
training and experience to select the best
sawing and drilling procedures to employ at
any stage of a project.
Concrete Cutting Advantage
Knowledgeable contractors recommend and
use diamond cutting systems because they
can provide significant cost advantages over
conventional concrete removal methods.
These advantages vary depending on the
project, but include reduced downtime,
precision cutting, maintenance of structural
integrity, reduced noise, dust and debris,
limited-access cutting, and the ability to cut
heavily reinforced concrete. These advantages
have revolutionized the concrete cutting
industry. The table above details the specific
advantages over conventional concrete
removal systems.
Diamond cutting systems Conventional removal systems
Time• Fast • Slow, methodical• Fewer operators • Labour-intensive• Preliminary work possible • Preliminary work not possible• Cuts rebar and other metals • Extra metal cutting equipment required
Dimensional tolerance• Precise cuts • Uncontrolled openings• Limited patchwork required • Extensive patchwork required
Structural integrity• Vibration free • High impact vibration causes
microfractures of concrete• Ability to remove large amounts of concrete • Potential damage to remaining structures
while maintaining structural integrity or nearby equipment
Noise, dust, debris• Non-disruptive to surrounding operations • Disruptive• Relatively quiet • Loud• Pieces cut to size • Creates rubble• Dust free • Extremely dusty• Large bulk removal capacity • Time-consuming clean-up
Limited access• Remote operations possible • Inflexible equipment• Cuts in close spaces • Restricted movement• Underwater operations possible • Underwater operations difficult
or impossible• Easily cuts around existing pipes, existing • Difficult to work around piping and
fixtures and equipment electrical equipment
FOR CONCRETE DRILLING & SAWING TAKE THE PROFESSIONAL ADVANTAGE
FloorSawingFloor sawing is the most commonly useddiamond cutting method. It is typically usedto cut horizontal flat surfaces such as floors, bridge decks, and pavement. Also called slabsaws, floor saws feature a diamond bladethat is mounted on a walk-behind machinerequiring only one operator. Floor saws aretypically used to provide expansion joints, remove damaged pavement sections, cleanand repair random cracks and removeconcrete sections for demolition purposes.
WireSawingWire sawing is a technique that originated inquarries to extract stone. It has proven to bean ideal choice for the removal of thicksections of concrete. A multi-strand cablefitted with diamond beads is threadedthrough a series of pulleys and is pulledcontinuously through the concrete. Sincevirtually no concrete structure or cross-sectionis too large to cut, wire saws are used wheneverother cutting methods are impractical. The only restriction is the lifting and removalspecifications of the job.Wire sawing is ideal for removing largesections of heavily reinforced concrete, suchas piers, towers and bridge sections, and forcutting concrete in areas where work space isrestricted. So-called circle saws are used forcutting larger diameter holes for spiral staircases ect.
Techniques
Track SawingTrack sawing employs a circular blade on atrack-mounted machine. The track is attachedto vertical walls or steep inclines or floors thatwill not permit the use of floor saws. Wall ortrack sawing is typically specified to cutprecise dimensional door, vent and windowopenings. Straight as well as bevel cuts arepossible with the wall saw. The wall saw isalso an excellent choice for creating preciseopenings in any concrete structure.
CoreDrilling
Core drilling techniques are used when precise, circular cuts are needed. Holes of almost
any diameter are easily drilled to makeopenings for plumbing, electrical and HVACinstallations. Core drilling is also commonly
used to create holes for routing cables orplacing anchoring bolts, installing load carrying
devices or dowel bars, or for concretesample analysis.
Hand Sawing
Hand sawing refers to the lighter duty useof diamond blades in hand-held power sawsand chain type saws. Hand sawing provides
portability, speed and accessibility at constructionand demolition sites.
Typical applications include sawing concretepipes to length, creating smaller openings
in masonry, eliminating overcuts associatedwith other types of sawing, and precision
trimming.
Techniques
BurstingHydraulic Bursting is one of the safest and most efficient methods of removing reinforced or mass concrete, brickwork, or natural stone. Hydraulic Burster’s are placed in pre-drilled holes and expanded to induce controlled cracking of the material. Thus reducing it to manageable sections for removal. What’s more, theequipment can be used in confined spaces without risk. This technology is used to remove heavily reinforced concrete up to 5 m thick in structures such as dams, bridges, and nuclear power stations where a precise, controlled system of removal was required.
Techniques
CrushingThe crunchers are basically either a C shape or a crabs claw where the claws compress together to crush the material. It is powered by hydraulics and is driven by either an electric or diesel/petrol engine. The C shaped type has a piston that closes to crush the material. The limitations of this method are that the jaws are heavy and require a counter balancer to take much of the weight. It is alsorestricted to material under 350mm in thickness. It requires a fully boardedscaffolding below the floor area being worked upon. The advantages are small resulting rubble, no vibration, almost no noise and no water.
Remote ContolledCrushing & Bursting
Techniques
The remotely operated demolition machines are the very latest in controlled demolition,
featuring high power, low weight and functional design. They are highly powerful,
stable machines with long reach the ideal solution to many of the environmental
problems facing demolition today. These electrically powered hydraulic power packs
are remotely controlled and immensely powerful. They produce no harmful fumes
and can alleviate hand-arm vibration problems, traditionally associated with
manual work in confined spaces.
