  • 2 Getting Started

2.1 What is SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio?SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio enables application designers to create analysis applications and dashboards - based on BW, SAP HANA and universe data sources - for browsers and mobile devices (iPads, for example). It is the product of choice when full support for BW and HANA data models and engine capabilities is required. The product offers a design tool that allows you to create applications easily and intuitively without the need for native HTML and iPad UI programming skills.SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio can be used locally and integrated in the following platforms: SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI platform) SAP NetWeaver SAP HANA

NoteIn local mode, you can create demo analysis applications for presenting and evaluating SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio with users at customer locations.

Besides analysis applications, application designers can also create planning applications that support both manual and automated data entry and changes to data. The application user can enter the planning data manually in the crosstab (in cells or rows) or use planning functions and planning sequences (also known as planning objects) in SAP NetWeaver BW Integrated Planning to enter data automatically. For planning data, you have to use a BW backend system as the planning system.A Real-Time package, also available with Design Studio, allows application designers to create visualizations with streaming data (push based), and to create visualizations, which have a near Real-Time connection to SAP HANA or SAP BW (pull based). Real-Time dashboards apply in the area of operational systems, where data may only be relevant as it occurs and where it may not be neccessary to persist the data - for example, utility companies monitoring smart buildings and the financial capital markets. In addition to the standard palette of components in Design Studio, which are used to visualize data and enable user interaction, you can develop 3rd party components with the Design Studio SDK and enhance your analysis applications with custom components. Besides SDK components that visualize data from a data source, you can also create SDK components that act as data sources for SDK components themselves. This enables SDK components to access a broad range of data sources such as local files, Web services, or new types of backend system. You can store and provide access to the analysis applications containing the 3rd party components on any of the supported platforms.

5.1 Creating and Managing Data Source Connections in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence

SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio uses SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.0 or 4.1 as the central content management system for analysis applications, and as a platform for managing OLAP data source connections as well as universes. Before designers can add data sources to the analysis applications they design, you have to create OLAP data source connections to SAP HANA systems or BW systems, or universes.

    OLAP Data Source Connections

An OLAP data source connection is a BI platform repository object that contains all the information required for SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio to connect to a data source. This connection object is then linked to an analysis application. You can create connections to individual BEx queries, BEx query views or InfoProviders of the BW system. You can also create connections to individual analytic views or calculation views of the SAP HANA system, or to BW or SAP HANA systems containing a large number of these objects. If a designer adds a data source to an analysis application, the designer must then choose an individual query or query view from the BW system connection. With SAP HANA connections, the application designer can choose individual analytic views or calculation views. You create new data source connection objects and manage existing connection objects for SAP HANA or BW systems with one of the following tools: The Information Design Tool (IDT) The module OLAP Connections in the Central Management Console (CMC) of the business intelligence

    platform

CautionThe module OLAP Connections is only available in the CMC if you have SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, edition for OLAP installed with your BI platform installation. In order to use the module OLAP Connections, the Multidimensional Analysis Service of the BI platform must be enabled.

Connections can be saved to a single folder, or you can create subfolders to help group your connection objects together and manage access rights. For example, you could create a folder for SAP NetWeaver BW data source connections, and another folder for SAP HANA data source connections, and grant users access to only one of the folders.

Administrator Guide: SAP BusinessObjects Design StudioConfiguration 2015 SAP SE or an SAP affiliate company. All rights reserved. 31

  • NoteIn the design tool of SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio, all data source connections are shown in a flat list, even if you organize them by folders in the CMC.OLAP connections are shared with other applications, such as SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, edition for Microsoft Office, SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, edition for OLAP, and SAP Crystal Reports.

For more information about creating and managing connections in SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform, see: Creating an OLAP connection in the Information Design Tool User Guide at http://help.sap.com/bobip41. Data Source Connections and Connection settings for SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse data sources

in the SAP BusinessObjects Analysis, edition for OLAP Administrator Guide at http://help.sap.com/boaolap41.

    Universes

A universe is an organized collection of metadata objects that enable business users to analyze and report on corporate data in a non-technical language. These objects include dimensions, measures, hierarchies, attributes, pre-defined calculations, functions, and queries. The metadata object layer, referred to as the business layer, is built on a relational database schema; the objects map directly to the database structures by means of SQL expressions. A universe includes connections that identify the data sources so that queries can be run on the data. You create universes and the corresponding relational connections using the Information Design Tool (IDT) and publish them to the BI platform. For more information about creating universes and defining relational connections, see Creating Universes in the Information Design Tool User Guide at http://help.sap.com/bobip41.

NoteThe BI platform server needs to be SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence 4.1. If you want to use universe queries as data sources in your analysis applications, you cannot use SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence 4.0.

Universes can be saved to a single folder, or you can create subfolders to help group your universes and OLAP connection objects together and manage access rights. For example, you could create a folder for universes and the corresponding relational connection, a folder for SAP NetWeaver BW data source connections, and another folder for SAP HANA data source connections, and grant users access to only one of the folders.

NoteIn the design tool of SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio, all universes and data source connections are shown in a flat list, even if you organize them by folders in the CMC.
