With the coming of September, it’s back to school for students, marking the end of summer. Back to books and back to learning. DRK Magazine would like to remind all drivers and riders to slow down and be mindful of school and playground zones. So many times, I see drivers speeding through a school or playground zone; this is a disaster waiting to happen. Rather than speeding, leave 5 minutes earlier for your commute.

Late July and August were busy times for the entire DRK team. We were honoured to be invited to two great events: the exclusive Aston Martin Designed to be Driver Tour event and the Ducati 821 launch party. At both of these events, we had the chance to get up close and personal with models from two of the best manufacturers in the world. The summer months also meant time for test drives, and in this issue, we feature extended test drives and rides of the 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale, 2014 BMW 535d and 2014 Ducati Hyperstrada. It’s impressive how far technology has come in the past 20 years. Luxury options before, like traction control, ABS, and stability control, are now standard on most automobiles and motorcycles.

Even though we all know oil is important for our motor vehicle engines, many do not know what the numbers 5W30 or 10W30 mean. Our science expert explains oil grades and viscosity in simple terms. In addition, we get expert advice from Charles Carvalho about the importance of proper wheel align-ment. This issue also includes the launch of our new Lifestyle sections. Read about the top golf courses in BC and new trends in ladies’ fashion. We will be adding to these sections in future issues.

As always, there is lots of news, views, and other articles in this issue. As always, we welcome your feedback and we encourage you to visit our webpage, www.drkmag.com and like our Facebook page by searching for DRK – Desi Road Kings.

Maple Ridge’s Stevie Shayler did not expect the loud honk-ing on the street outside of her home to be anything too excit-ing. But when the fitness trainer stepped outside her home and saw two SUVs with Z95.3 logos on them, her heart started rac-ing. Shayler had entered a contest where she had to stick a Z sticker somewhere, take a selfie of herself with it, and then post it on a social media site, hashtagging the radio station. Over 800 people entered the contest, but Shayler, who did not have a great audition on the same morning, was the winner of a 2015 Volkswagen Golf, provided by Maple Ridge Volkswagen.

A new generation Nissan Leaf, available late 2016, will more than double the range of the current model. According to Auto Express, the electric car will likely have a range of about 300 km. The all-electric car will be priced around the $28,000 mark. The current model of the Nissan Leaf has a range of 120 km and list price of $31,000. The new Leaf’s release will coincide with Tesla’s newest offering of the Tesla Model 3. Nissan hopes that the lower price and higher range will at-tract even more buyers to this clean and efficient car.

AUGUST 2014

Consumers looking to save on a new car or truck should do their shop-ping in August, according to the market analysts. New car and truck prices during the past five years in August have averaged about $200 lower as compared to any other month. The worst month to buy a vehicle is December, where the average price is about $1900 higher as compared to August.

Cadillac released new pictures of its 2015 CTS. Since the car was completely redone last year, this year’s modifications are much more subtle. The main differences are in the nose of the car, which now sports the new wreath-less Cadillac logo. A chromed grille comes stan-dard, but the Vsport model gets a tinted black one. Projector headlights now come standard, and HID lamps with adaptive lightning can be equipped to the CTS. Active grille shutters are now standard for all models. Inside, a wireless

cellphone charger is now available, and the CUE infotainment system has been upgraded to feature a text message warning and the Wi-Fi Hotspot function. For safety, a lane departure system and a perpendicular parking function have been added to the standard equipment list. Finally, the car’s looks will be upgraded with new 18 and 19 inches wheels, and by the ad-dition of two new colours: Crystal White and Adriatic Blue.

This new sole and shoe combination, called Lechal (a Hindi word meaning “take me along”) connects a user’s smartphone and then communicates with apps, such as Google Maps, to act as a navigation system. Rather than looking at the screen or listening to directions, just pin your destination in Google Maps. Then, the soles take charge; for example, for left turns, the left sole vibrates and for right turns, the right sole vibrates. This technology was originally developed for the visually impaired, but the shoes can be used to guide a person who’s on foot or bike. Lechal developers say this technology could be invaluable for tourists in any destination. What’s more, the shoes can also keep track of steps or distance travelled and calories burned. The Lechal shoes are developed by Indian company, Ducere Technologies.

Chevrolet and GMC have confirmed a new eight-speed au-tomatic transmission will be standard on 2015 Chevrolet Sil-verado, GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali models equipped with the 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8.

The GM-developed Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed is ap-proximately the same size and weight as the Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic. Its 7.0 overall gear ratio spread is wider than GM’s six-speed automatic transmissions, providing a nu-merically higher first gear ratio to help drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering. The 8L90 also enables numerically lower rear axle ratios, which reduce engine rpm on the highway. Additional technical details and the fuel consumption ratings will be announced closer to the start of pro-duction in the fourth quarter of 2014.

A few weeks ago, Infiniti gave a teaser taste of a new model. Although there are no pictures or videos, let alone one of a po-tential grill, Infiniti said that the new model, “will share a vi-sion, soul, on a scale not seen before by the company.” There’s talk that it could be the Q50 Eau Rouge, or the Q30 concept, but these are vehicles we’ve seen. Even though no date has been set, it seems this new model could be revealed at the Paris Mo-tor Show in October.

Sikhs who ride motorcycles in Ontario will wear helmets, not tur-bans, says the provincial government. A story in the thestar.com says the Canadian Sikh Association was notified by the province last week that the Liberal government will not give Sikhs the same right to ride with turbans rather than helmets as they enjoy in British Columbia and Manitoba.

Safety, said Premier Kathleen Wynne, is more important than reli-gious freedom.

She said the courts have determined that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Ontario Human Rights Code are not infringed by the province’s helmet law. Sikhs are reported to be unhappy with the decision.

A Vancouver man has created a lighting system for motorcycle helmets in the style of the movie Tron: Legacy, and has raised funds through a Kickstarter Internet campaign to get his products onto the market.

Thomas Plywaczewski told the Province newspaper that he developed the helmet modifi cation idea while he was studying engineering physics at Simon Fraser University. He formed a company, LightMode, built a prototype, which the Province says “turned heads wherever he rode,” and when he graduated he set about building the helmet gear for sale.

He said he’s received queries about the helmet kits from around the world, and hopes to ship thousands of them to customers. So far, he has raised more than $10,000 through Kickstarter.

Victory Motorcycles recently unveiled the new Mag-num bagger, a “factory-custom” addition to its Cross Country line.

The Magnum is powered by Victory’s Freedom 106 mo-tor, a 1,731 cc V-twin that peaks at a claimed 106 lb-ft of torque. Other highlights include: 21-inch cast front wheel; three-tone paint with “eye-popping” graphic schemes; co-lour-matched dash; 100W in-dash audio system; and full LED lighting.

Magnums should reach Canadian dealerships in late 2014 with an MSRP starting at $24,599.

The Italians are well-known for producing exceptionally high-end products, ranging from great pastas and suits to exotic cars and well of course, motorcycles. Ducati first established itself in 1944 by producing the Cucciolo (meaning “puppy”), a small

engine intended to be put on bikes. This engine sold so well that the company began building motorcycles – the rest, is history. Recently, I was asked by Ducati Richmond to take the new 899 Panigale for an extended test ride - who am I to complain, right? For four great sunny days, I rode the new 899 as my daily commuter, and at the end, I was a little disheartened to return the keys.

Page 12: Drk september 2014

September 201412

The 2014 899 Panigale, or 899 for short, replaces the popu-lar 848 EVO, the baby superbike in Ducati’s lineup. Launched in 2013, Ducati claims the 899 is the best of both worlds: a pure track bike as well as a supersport road bike. What did we think of the new 899? Read on.

The 899 Panigale is a gorgeous bike, becoming eye-candy where ever it was parked. I would be torn between the two co-lours of choice – Arctic White Silk or Ducati Red. If I really had to choose, I’d probably end up going with the Arctic White be-cause it’s clean, silky smooth, offsets the black frame and high-lights the red wheels. The look of the 899 is very similar to the 1199, but just a tad smaller; however, upon closer inspection, there are some differences. For example, unlike its older brother, the 899 uses aluminum rather than magnesium for some engine

covers; similarly, the rear subframe is steel and not aluminum. The biggest difference with looks is that big brother gets a single swing-arm vs the 899’s simple twin-sided design. What does all this mean? Well, for most people, not much; however, it does mean that the smaller 899 actually weighs about 5 kg more than larger 1199. It’s worthwhile to note that this bike is in no way “heavy” as it’s actually much lighter than the outgoing 848 EVO. Oh, and by the way, the 1199 also has LED headlights, just in case you wanted to know.

After a quick run-through of the bike, I fi red it up and im-mediately realized why I was always attracted to the Ducati brand. There is something mesmerizing, and daunting, of the Desmodromic, 148 hp, L-twin engine when it comes to life. The rumbling of the side exhausts warns others that this bike means

A NEW RETRO MODERN CATbusiness. The all-new LCD display is crisp and clear, although I would have preferred the TFT full-colour version found on the 1199. On the left handle are the controls for settings, which are easily accessible; keep in mind not to play with these controls until you get used to the bike. Riding position is exactly the same as on the 1199, and rather comfortable, much more-so than the outgoing 848 EVO. Thankfully, there is more seat padding as compared to the 1199, which does make this bike more street friendly than its older brother.

My fi rst few hours on the bike were quite reserved, as I was testing out the new features. The ride is surprisingly comfortable for a superbike of this calibre. One thing I’ll point out here, and most Ducati owners already know, is that there is a bit of heat given off on the sides of the bike. Within a short period of time,

my inner thighs were beginning to feel a tad warm. No, this is defi nitely not a deal breaker for me, but wear jeans at the least. Riding around Richmond, Surrey, and Coquitlam gave me ample opportunity to test the nimbleness of the bike, and it did not disappoint. Unlike the Japanese brands, however, the 899 does not like sitting around and puttering in traffi c below 2000 rpm. But it is a twin, so below 2000 rpm doesn’t really count.

The next day, I decided to wear my full racing leathers because I was going to be doing a lot of riding. The leathers made the ride even more comfortable and allowed me to push the bike further and have some more fun. The 899 is crisp and handles very well, thanks to the 43mm Showa Big Piston Fork, which provides damping under low-pressure conditions. The adjustable Sachs rear monoshock gave excellent response for our roads. Thanks to these new innovations in suspension and a 50:50 weight distribution ratio, taking corners and tight curves was a breeze along the Sea-to-Sky Highway. The 899 Panigale felt right at home on these roads, allowing me to throw it around all bends that came my way.

What can I say about the power of the 899 other than there’s tonnes of it. The fast-revving engine responds the in-stant you tweak the throttle, and the exhaust fi res like bursts from a 30mm gun. This is defi nitely not your regular lum-bering V-twin. Above 7,000 rpm, the Panigale pulls strong, almost too strong for a novice rider. The bonus on the 899 is the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), which allows the rider to shift between gears on acceleration without using the clutch. Even though this feature is available and safe, I still found myself using the clutch most of the time. Another great feature of the Panigale is the availability of 3 pre-set Riding Modes: Race, Sport, and Wet. The Ducati Riding Modes instantly modify the power delivery by the engine, ABS activation level, Ducati Traction Control, DQS, and Engine Brake Control, as well as the graphics on the instrument panel. I wasn’t able to test the Wet mode, but there was a huge difference between the Race and Sport modes. And if you need to stop fast, just grab a handful of brake and the Brembos will stop you in an instant, almost to the point of throwing you over the handlebars if you’re not careful.

Ducati has found a sweet spot with its 899 Panigale. It has a tonne of power and feels at home on the track or road. I found the 899 Panigale to have the perfect balance of potent power mixed with the latest innovations in safety, offering rid-ers a truly involving riding experience. The 2014 899 Panigale may seem steep at $16, 295, but it is a Ducati and it’s Italian.

Many of us don’t realize the importance of proper wheel alignment on our cars. We tend to think that nothing much happens to our tires other than an occasional puncture. Nothing can be further from the truth. It is very important that we regularly get our wheels aligned, with some experts advising that it should be done as often as the car gets serviced.

Wheel alignment is making sure that the wheels of the car are perpendicular to the road, as well as ensuring that wheels are parallel to one other. Here are the benefits of proper (and frequent) wheel alignment.

Benefit #1 Save FuelWhen the wheels of the car are not

aligned there is uneven pressure on the tires. They tend to push against each other. When that happens the car faces uneven friction and much more resistance from the road sur-face. This means that your car has to work that much harder tomove forward and burn fuel in the processWhen you align the wheels properly, there is much less resistance from the road surface. This results in not only a smoother drive but sometimes noticeable savings on your gas receipts.

Benefit #2 Carin g for the Environment

It’s simple: burning fossil fuel is a major cause of pollution. This is one way of doing our bit by using a little less fuel.

Benefit #3 Save on New TiresThe importance of proper wheel align-

ment cannot be more emphasized when we compare the cost of brand new tires to the little amount spent on getting them aligned.

More resistance to the road surface means more pressure on the rubber of your tires. That leads to very quick wear and tear, result-ing in the tire becoming bald, and therefore uneven, on one side. Not only is it dangerous to drive on uneven tires, it also means that you have to spend on new tires sooner.

And chances are, you won’t be covered by the tire manufacturer’s warranty, either. Just read the fine print: no warranty is ex-tended if the tires are kept in shoddy condi-tion. This is not a manufacturing defect; it is due to poor maintenance of the tires on an owner’s part.

Benefit #4 SafetyIt is very important to consider the safety

factor, too. Have you ever driven a car which pulls itself to one side all the time? This is due to faulty wheel alignment. You probably know how difficult it is to drive on a wet or iced road even with perfectly aligned wheels.

With badly aligned wheels, you are taking on unnecessary risk, potentially causing an acci-dent and endangering the lives of loved ones.

Benefit #5 Less Strain On The CarHaving a car with badly aligned wheels

creates deeper, system problems. Your brake shaft does not work to optimal levels. The tendency to pull to one side due to uneven tires causes problems in the steering system. It also leads to uneven braking. Improper wheel alignments or not having your wheels aligned will affect the suspension of your car, a complicated and delicately balanced piece of technology that is very costly to replace.

So, Get your wheels aligned if... The car veers to the right or left when

you’re steering straight. One tire is worn more than another. It’s been six months or 1,000 km since your last alignment. You have hit something large enough to cause align-ment issues. One More Thing Despite what “experts” tell you, wheel alignment is not the same as wheel balancing. Wheel balanc-ing is simply adjusting the balance between the tire and the rim. It is important not to get confused between the two and adhere to the above regiment for optimal driving pleasure and safety.

So let’s say you’re in the market for a motorcycle that can handle both touring and motard, and you want great engineering and design. There are some noteworthy options, but one of the top contenders would have to be the 2014 Ducati Hyperstrada, which has some welcome refinements as compared to last year’s model. Even though I only had one day with the bike, it won me over rather quickly.

The Hyper design has been a top seller for Ducati since its incep-tion and production in 2005. The 2014 Hyperstrada has great flow-ing lines, high ground clearance, a sharp and high tail-piece mixed with a thin waistline, all while still retaining the minimalist image of the Ducati family. My test bike had the Ducati red and black paint scheme, a beautiful combination.

I’m 5’11” and had no trouble climbing onto and sitting on the standard seat height of 33.5”. The Hyperstrada is also offered in a “low version” with shorter suspension, giving a seat height of 32.7”. The design of the Hyperstrada and commanding ride posi-tion gives the rider an instand Supermotard feeling, with the added luxury of latest street bike comfort and quality. The longer chassis has also improved comfort and stability.

For many people, the sound of a V-Twin is music to the ears, and the Hyperstrada continues with an 821 cc twin, albeit now it’s liquid cooled. The new engine is absolutely beautiful: flexible at low, strong through the mid-range, and creamy smooth during high revs, especially since it’s matched with a sweet shifting 6-speed gearbox. What I really liked with the Hyperstrada were the three riding modes: Sport, which delivers 110 hp and has a high throttle response; Touring, also delivering 110 hp but with medium throttle response and; Urban, which delivers 75 hp and low throttle re-sponse. Shifting through the riding modes was a breeze, plus prac-tical. Since Vancouver is rich with congested streets to wide open roads, you will be thankful for these riding modes.

Ducati’s ride quality is very good, its handling on Vancouver roads very agile. It actually handled normal everyday riding much better than I expected. So yes, it can be used as a daily commuter, especially since you can pack the 3 saddle bags. But this bike is more built for canyon riding, where it terrorizes the twists and turns with careless abandon. With its endless ground clearance, you can really put the bike on its side without hesitation. Need to stop in a hurry? Grab a handful of brake and the Brembos stop you on a dime; need I say more?

Because of a tight schedule, I only had the Hyperstrada for a day, and while handing the keys back to the dealership, I thought I really needed it for a weekend. So who needs a Hyperstrada? Well, if you are looking for unadulterated fun, this is the bike to get. Yes, it does have a couple of shortcomings, but the overall package, especially from Ducati, means you’re getting a great bike that can do a lot. The 2014 Ducati Hyperstrada starts at $13, 995.

INKAS® Armored Vehicle Manufac-turing introduces the first of its kind fully armored and stretched Mercedes-Benz G63 executive limousine. With a 60” stretch the vehicle easily serves as a fully-functional executive mobile office. Moreover, armor-ing and stretching adds both extra safety and comfort to one of the most popular vehicles in its class, essentially creating a virtual boardroom on wheels with power to match.

“We’re proud to introduce this first of its kind bulletproof limousine based on the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG platform. The vehicle was fully designed, stretched and armored in-house at our facility in Toron-to, Canada. Due to the recent increase in Mercedes-Benz G-class orders for armor-ing and stretching, we have scheduled the deployment of a new dedicated assembly line for this model, which will strengthen our world-leading positions in the field of armored and stretched Mercedes-Benz ve-hicles,” said Philip Daskal, VP of Sales at INKAS® Armored Vehicle Manufacturing.

The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG Limo has an exclusive customized interior, which incorporates innovative top-quality materi-als such as exotic leather and curved wood for the dashboard, armrests and other parts of the interior. The vehicle is equipped with captain style heated and cooled leather seats with luxurious massage systems, an execu-tive customized safe, a bar, innovative light system as well as advanced multimedia and audio systems. Furthermore, the parti-tion between the driver and the passenger compartment contains built-in TV screens allowing for maximal form and function.

The vehicle incorporates perimeter ar-moring of the passenger compartment in or-der to provide protection against 7.62mm, 308 Winchester FMJ ammunition, in accor-dance with NIJ Standard 0108.01 Level 3 and/or CEN 1063 Level B6. The vehicle’s floor is armored to withstand blasts and shrapnel from the effects of 2 x DM51 gre-nades detonated simultaneously. All doors and windows apertures are overlapped with bullet catchers installed between all open

crevices. In order to ensure that the vehi-cle’s factory characteristics are left mostly intact after armoring, INKAS® Armored has upgraded suspension and braking com-ponents to ensure maximal ride quality and control.

In terms of window protection, INKAS® employed a new generation of bulletproof glass, which is more transpar-ent in comparison with other ballistic glass available on the market all while maintain-ing the necessary ballistic properties. Also, a custom-engineered solution by INKAS® Armored allows the windows to maintain operability and be rolled down for limited use on toll ways, checkpoints and during document transfers.

Currently, INKAS® Armored Vehicle Manufacturing is working on yet another new generation of armored Mercedes-Benz G-class limousines. The first model is scheduled to be released in September 2014.

The Automobile Journal-ists Association of Canada (AJAC) announced the 2014 Mazda6 as the winner of the Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) award for 2014.

The journey began at AJAC/s TestFest in October, when the Mazda6 handily won its category (Best New Family Car over $30,000), alongside its stable mates, the Mazda3 and Mazda3 Sport, which also scored top marks in their respective categories. The strong march to-ward victory continued when the Mazda3 and Mazda6 were nominat-ed as finalists for the award, finally culminating in the AJAC CCOTY win for Mazda6.

“Today, the Mazda6, our flagship vehicle, etched its name in his-tory by winning the overall AJAC Car of the Year award,” said Kory Koreeda, President, Mazda Canada. “This impressive achievement confirms what we already knew – the 2014 Mazda6 is nothing short of a Game Changer, once again raising the bar and outclassing other cars in its segment.”

The Canadian Car of the Year is one of the most coveted automo-tive awards in the automotive industry, and represents the collective voice of more than 80 of Canada’s top automotive experts. Vehicles are judged on a large variety of objective and subjective qualities, meaning there is no single factor that determines a win. Instead, the vehicle must represent an overall package of quality, value, comfort, fuel economy, and many other factors that are critical to the Canadian consumer.

The third-generation Mazda6 features ground-breaking Mazda-engineered technology; i-ELOOP, the world’s first capacitor-based

brake energy regeneration system to power all the ve-hicle’s electrical systems, along with the front colli-sion-detecting Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) sys-tem, make their first appear-ance in the Mazda6.

Developed solely by Mazda, SKYACTIV Tech-nology is the umbrella term for a host of performance-oriented, fuel-saving engine,

transmission, body, and chassis components. Introduced in the 2012 Mazda3 compact car, and fully-incorporated into the 2013 CX-5 compact SUV, the redesigned 2014 Mazda6 is the second vehicle in the brand’s lineup to feature the great technology that indeed offers real-world results.

The 2014 Mazda6 has a starting MSRP of $24,495 and features a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter gasoline engine that produces 184 horsepow-er at 5,700 rpm and 185 lb-ft of torque at 3,250 rpm. Standard equip-ment for all three trim levels – GX, GS, and GT – the SKYACTIV-G 2.5L can be paired with a choice of transmissions in the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic.

The 2014 Mazda6 comes equipped with a SKYACTIV-MT transmission as standard equipment and offers a Transport Canada-estimated fuel economy rating of 8.1 city/5.3 highway litres per 100 kilometres (L/100km). When compared to the previous generation Mazda6 with a six-speed manual, the 2014 Mazda6 sees a 19 percent increase in the city and 23 percent increase on the highway. When paired with the optional SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and i ELOOP regenerative braking system, fuel economy improves to a best-in-class 7.2 city/4.9 highway L/100km.

Toyota Canada Inc., announced that it will conduct a safety recall involving approximately 152,438 vehicles consisting of certain Model Year 2006-2010 Yaris Hatchback vehicles; certain Model Year 2007-2010 Yaris Sedan vehicles; and certain Model Year 2010 Scion xD vehicles.

In the seat rail of the driver seat of the involved vehicles and also the front passenger seat of three-door models, the springs used for the mechanism which lock the seat rail in its adjusting positions could break. This can happen if the seat is adjusted forward and/or rearward with high frequency. If a seat rail spring breaks, the seat may not lock into the adjusted position. If the vehicle is operated with a broken seat rail spring, the seat could move in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. This could increase the risk of injury to the driver. Toyota is currently preparing the remedy. Once preparations are complete, owners of vehicles subject to this recall will receive an owner notification letter by mail.

Steve McQueen, a legendary Hollywood actor with an anti-hero persona, always had a passion for fast cars, fast motorcycles, and racing in itself. McQueen’s 1938 Triumph Speed Twin was restored for him by his best friend and fellow racer Bud Ekins.

McQueen was always a fan of British motorcycles and even raced them all around the world – in fact, he even rode in disguise during the famous motorcycle scene in the movie, “The Great Escape.”

The Triumph Speed Twin was fi rst launched at the 1937 National Motorcycle Show. Designed by Edward Turner, the Speed Twin was the fi rst successful and possibly the most important 500cc parallel twin British motorcycle of the 20th century. 1938 was the fi rst model year the Speed Twin was offered and the model was credited for saving Triumph in the diffi cult post-war period. The Speed Twin also set the trend in engine design that still persists today, even after almost 80 years. The two cylinders were fed by a single Amal Type 6 carberator, while many features of the transmis-sion and clutch were borrowed straight from the Triumph single.

The Speed Twin developed 28 hp @ 6000 rpm, which was impressive for

1938. It weighed 182 kg and had a fuel capacity of 18 liters.

Some would argue that the 1938 Triumph Speed Twin was the last real gentleman’s motorcycle, intended for the professional chap who wanted to arrive at work looking spiffy. In fact, Triumph even fi tted the motorcycle with a valanced front fender and heav-ily skirted rear wheel enclosure to keep rain and dirt off the rider’s pants.

This retro-looking Italian bagger really turns heads with its un-orthodox looks. Moto Guzzi has a proud history of building great looking and, more importantly, great performing motorcycles. This 739-pound tourer is all engine, with a torquey 90-degree V-twin pop-ping out from both sides of the double-cradle steel frame. The six gears are well matched with the engine, but do require a little more effort as compared to a Japanese equivalent. The low center of gravity makes the bike well balanced and effortless to control and maneuver when on the road. The ride on the California 1400 Touring is surpris-ing very smooth and its huge 46mm fork and twin preload-adjustable rear shocks eat up road irregularities without feeling overly soft. Traction control is standard, with three levels of setting. The saddle bags are very functional and quite stylish. The 2014 California 1400 Touring starts at $19, 040.

For many two-wheeler fans, it’s just as much fun to ride a dirt bike as a street bike. The Honda CRF250L is a great dual-sport bike that feels right at home on the gravel and dirt as it does on the streets. I had a chance to ride this bike for a few hours, and it really surprised me. The bike handles the roads quite easily, but where it really shines is off-road. A long travel inverted fork up front, matched Pro-link rear suspension, generous ground clear-ance, and great ergonomics made this bike a blast to ride on trails. I had honestly forgotten how fun off-road biking was. Complete with fuel injection, the CRF250L is a breeze to start and offers great fuel economy. The single-cylinder 249cc four-stroke engine delivers smooth and consistent torque at low rpm, plus excellent high-rpm performance. The 2014 Honda CRF250L starts at $4, 999.

The Nissan Altima was completely redesigned in 2013 and wow, what a difference. The previous generation had a somewhat bland body style, which didn’t really appeal to me personally. For 2014, the exterior styling is tweaked, and is still gorgeous. In ad-dition, there are some signifi cant changes with respect to tech-nology, sport and audio option packages, and available interior and exterior upgrades. For those who are two door fans, you’re not going to like this, but the coupe has been axed. The standard engine continues to be the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, which pro-duces 182 hp, and for most people, this will be the power plant of choice. Nissan claims that the new Altima can deliver an amazing class-leading 55 mpg fuel economy. Two options I would choose for sure are the rear decklid spoiler and the remote engine starter. The 2014 Altima starts at $23, 698.

The 2014 SRX may look almost the same as last year’s model from the outside, but its interior has been completely revamped and includes the latest in safety and convenience features. The fi rst generation SRX, in my opinion, was an ugly duckling; however, like the ugly duckling, the SRX grew to its current generation and is attractive, with its bold lines and 3D grille detailing at the front end. In fact, this model is Caddy’s most popular, accounting for over 1/3 of all Cadillac sales. The SRX is powered by a 3.6-liter V6, which produces 308 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque; that’s enough for a 0 – 60 mph time of just 7.1 seconds. What really makes the SRX shine is its dedication to safety, and this SUV is a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS. This is a solid strategy for small family buyers who put the welfare of their passengers fi rst. The 2014 Cadillac starts at $41, 030.

Last year, I had the opportunity to drive the 2013 BMW 550i xDrive, a mid-sized rocket that lived up to all of my expecta-tions, and then some. Recently, I was handed the keys to the new 535d, another diesel ve-hicle added to BMW’s lineup. A few months ago, I gave the 328d two thumbs up, and af-ter a week with the 535d, this car definitely did not disappoint.

The finely crafted lines of the 5 Series continue to be very pleasing on the eyes. The front end is visibly more aggressive than the preceding generation and for 2014, there are subtle changes to the grille lines and lower air intakes. On the sides, the beltline crease extends the length of the car to the refined tail end, where the rear taillights are more sharply contoured as compared to 2013. The angel eyes, or halo rings, are bright as ever, even in the daylight. If you own a previous

generation of BMW, you can add angel eyes to just about any model. BMW continues to pay a great deal of attention to the finer de-tails, which give the car a daring look. This newest generation of 5 Series, coupled with the changes for 2014, make this model one of the best looking midsize sedans.

The 2014 BMW 5 Series is a luxury ve-hicle that is now available in six trim levels: the 528i, 535i, 535d, 550i, ActiveHybrid 5 and the head-snapping M5. These trims are based on engine size. For those looking for fuel efficiency, the obvious choices are ei-ther the turbocharged four-cylinder 528i, which produces 240 hp, or the 535d, which produces 255 hp. The difference between the two is that the diesel produces a whopping 413 lb-ft of torque. Other engine options include the turbocharged 535i six-cylinder, which produces 300 hp, or the new Active-

2014 BMW 535d

Page 30: Drk september 2014

Hybrid six-cylinder, which produces 335 hp. For lead footers who don’t care for fuel economy, opt for the 550i, which produces 400 hp or the head-snapping M5, with more than 560 ponies at your command. As BMW claims, there is a 5 Series for each person’s needs and I would whole-heartedly agree.

The cabin of the 535d continues to be driver-oriented. All major controls and dis-plays are well placed; in fact, they are all an-gled six degrees towards the driver. The dash is slightly lower as well, giving the interior a spacious feel. At the center of the dash sits the available 10.1” high-resolution screen, which is absolutely stunning and, one of the best in the market for this class. For 2014, the navigation package is standard on all 5 Series – way to go BMW. Front seating is spacious, yet still retains some cockpit feel. Rear seating is good, but slightly less than I would prefer. Three grown adults can sit comfortably in the rear; however, 2-3 more

inches in legroom would be ideal. My test vehicle included the Technology, Executive, and M Sport Packages. The base models come very well equipped but I was spoiled with Nappa leather, 18-way active heated and ventilated front seats, electric rear sun-shade, side sunshades, 4-zone climate con-trol, automatic trunk, lane departure warn-ing, active blind spot detection, surround view (with 5 cameras), active cruise control, 19” M wheels, M rear spoiler, and the HIFI System Professional with 16 speakers in-cluding 2 subwoofers. Yep, this tester had almost every option.

Next, the much debated iDrive system – either you like it or don’t. The first gen-eration iDrive system was not great, but this fourth generation has come a long way. You still have to go through different menus, with some button pushing, but it’s fairly straight forward with a short learning curve.

The central control button is smooth and toggles nicely, and for 2014, it has a touch-pad, which I found to be amazing. Similar to Audi’s system, you can now write on the touchpad rather than scrolling. Continuing on, streaming music from my smart phone via the A2DP was quick and effortless. Blue-tooth is great, and callers could hear me loud and clear, even while traveling at highway speeds.

On the road, this is one of the quietest die-sel cars I have driven. BMW did an excellent job in adding more sound proofing technol-ogy, allowing passengers to have a conver-sation without ever raising their voices. But, the last thing on my mind while driving the 535d was interior noise. Around the city, steering is nimble but precise and handling is excellent. Parking is also a breeze with the available 5 cameras. One caveat here is that if it’s raining, the cameras do get blurry rath-er quickly, so clean them as needed. On the open roads, the car comes alive and wants to be driven and pushed. Power is smooth along the entire rpm range and the motor is perfectly mated to an 8-speed transmission. Weight distribution is 50/50, giving the car excellent balance and control. Steering is re-sponsive and there is ample feedback from the road. In regular comfort mode, the car drives great. But if you’re still looking for more, then select the Sport Plus setting, push the shifter to the left for full sport mode and the beast truly comes alive. For those who think that only a manual makes a true sports car, this would definitely make you think twice.

Since I had the opportunity to drive on both dry and wet pavement, the xDrive sys-tem did not disappoint and the wheels re-mained firmly planted on the ground at all times. One of my most favourite technolo-gies in the 5 Series is definitely the Active Cruise Control. With sensors placed on the front of the car, the 5 Series maintains a cer-tain distance from the vehicle in front, in-so-much as applying brakes, even to a complete stop, and then accelerating again to maintain set speed. Continuing with safety, the vehicle is equipped with an Advanced Head Protec-tion System (front and rear), front and side airbags. The 5 Series was given a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and received a five-star overall safety rating.

Within the last couple of years, I have be-come a huge fan of diesel vehicles and this 535d is one of the top vehicles on my list. The 2014 BMW 535d starts at $68, 150.

It’s an undisputable fact that fall is one of the hottest, if not the hottest, sea-son for women’s fashion. It’s a time for trench coats, knee-high boots, chunky sweaters, stylish hats and endless out-fit ideas. As the top fashion designers around the world make their trendsetting debuts at various fashion weeks, some startling discoveries can be made per-taining to the season’s hottest trends. Fall 2014 is all about experimenting with daring silhouettes, unconventional col-ors, the re-emergence of the sweet sixties, and new materi-als. Here are some of the season’s most anticipated trends to watch out for:

• The Robe Coat: Loose bathrobe-style robe coats with long silhouettes were one of the major highlights of New York Fashion Week, almost guaranteeing their place in the fall must-haves list.

• Swinging ‘60s: An era known for the strong, flirtatious woman whose boldness is reflected in her extravagant sense of style. This theme first emerged at Milan Fashion Week, followed by Paris by the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton. Mini-skirts, trapeze dresses, go-go boots all make a comeback, bringing the swinging sixties back with a modern touch of extravagant patterns.

• An Assorted Mix of Fur Coat Styles: Extravagant, daring, and fluffy fur coats made a regular appearance in Fall 2014 fashion weeks, in materials of all kinds including rab-bit, fox, leopard and faux. The coats made their appearances in vivacious hues, waist-length figures and classical to bour-geoisie silhouettes.

• Bold, Vibrant and Unconventional Hues & Color Com-binations: Fall 2014 will not be restricted to the conventional fall colors we’ve seen in recent years. The typical fall hues will be replaced with sangria reds, romantic mauves, bold cobalts, royal blues, and warm yellows. Color combinations will also be out-of-the-box as witnessed by Joseph Altu-zarra’s wrap coat modeled in fuchsia and green, a trademark look that set the tone for fall’s vivid color themes.

Acura TLX: Replacing both the TL and TSX sedans in Acura’s lineup, the new TLX midsize luxury/sports sedan comes wrapped in more refined styling and, like the Honda Accord upon which its based, comes powered by either a 2.4-liter 206-horsepower four-cylinder engine or a 3.5-liter 290-horsepower V6; the former is coupled to an eight-speed automated manual transmission while the latter comes with a new nine-speed automatic. While the V6 can be equipped with the automaker’s “super handling” all-wheel-drive system that boosts traction on both wet and dry roads, front-drive models include an all-wheel steering system that turns the rear wheels slightly (in opposition to the front tires) to quicken the car’s handling. The TLX offers several of the latest collision prevention systems, including forward collision warning with auto-braking, lane departure and blind spot warning systems and adaptive cruise control with a low-speed function.

Ford F150: The industry’s best-selling vehicle gets a long-awaited redesign for 2015 that makes extensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials to help boost its fuel economy, but without sacrificing utility in the process. Updated styling gives it a wid-er stance, exaggerated wheel arches and a bolder front face that maintains its aggressive ambiance. A new 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine comes with an auto start-stop function that de-powers itself while at idle to help boost its fuel economy. A 3.5-liter V6 remains the standard powerplant, with the current version’s 3.5-liter turbocharged “EcoBoost” V6 and a traditional 5.0-liter V8 optional. As before, the F150 continues in a full range of configurations that include top-shelf Platinum and King Ranch editions. Newly offered features include lane departure and blind spot warning systems, integrated rear loading ramps, cargo bed LED lighting and a new BoxLink cargo-securing system.

Jeep Renegade: This new compact crossover SUV affixes a name from Jeep’s cel-ebrated past to a model that will be sold around the world. Looking a lot like a cross between a Jeep Wrangler and a Kia Soul, the angularly apportioned Renegade packs a choice of a 1.4 or 2.4-liter Fiat-supplied turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 160 and 184 horsepower, respectively; a six-speed manual is standard, while the available auto-matic transmission boasts nine speeds. Front drive is standard with either of two separate “Trail Rated” 4X4 systems available as well as a Selec-Terrain system with adjustable modes that allow it to venture off-road. Many of the latest high-tech accident avoidance features are offered for those who prefer keeping to the pavement. Removable roof panels afford an open-air effect.

Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Not exactly a new model, the reintroduced Z06 version of the Chevy Corvette Stingray takes that model’s performance to new heights courtesy of a new 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine that sends a passionate 625 horsepower to the rear wheels. That’s 120 horses more potent that the V8 that powered the previous ‘Vette’s Z06 model and it’s only 13 horsepower shy of the former ZR1 version that was priced well into $100,000. A seven-speed manual comes standard with a new quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters optional. A Z07 Per-formance Package boosts the car’s aerodynamics, and includes Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced traction as well as beefy Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake ro-tors for greater stopping abilities. GM’s Magnetic Ride Control allows a driver to fine tune the car’s ride and handling characteristics from metropolitan mannerly to race track-ready.

Porsche Macan: Porsche introduces its first sporty compact crossover for 2015, and it’s destined to become both its bestselling and most profitable model. The Macan shares its engineering DNA with the Audi Q5, but delivers more aggressive Porsche-like perfor-mance, overall. A 3.0-liter 340-hp twin-turbo V6 engine is the standard powerplant, with the top Turbo version instead packing a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates 400 horses and is claimed to make the 0-60 mph run in just 4.6 seconds. That makes it as quick as a Porsche 911 Carrera sports coupe, and it’s a far more comfortable and practical alternative at that. A sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and various chassis control systems prom-ise best-in-class handling abilities under a full range of driving situations and weather conditions.

Sadly, the surging expenses of new bikes are leaving many would-be riders to drive their four-wheel family cars rather than enjoy the freedom, feel the wind, and experience the rush of going down the open roads. Because of rising expenses, many riders have turned to purchasing a used motorcycle rather than buying a brand new one from the showroom. For instance, you could pay retail for a brand new 2014 model, or, save thousands by purchasing the same make and model that is a couple of years older. In addition, you could use the money you saved to modify or customize a used motorcycle.

Whatever the reason you need to purchase used, here are some use-ful tips which may assist you in your endeavour of purchasing a used motorcycle. For this article, we would like to thank John Bond, General Manager of Pinnacle Auto Sales and Leasing, for his valu-able insights and suggestions.

Check the AppearanceThis seems obvious, but many riders get excited about the thrill of the potential first ride that they neglect to see clear issues. John Bond says it’s best to check for clean paint lines and over-spray, which represent repaint and/or damage. Bond also suggest that if allowed, take off some screws and bolts and examine underneath: “You’d be surprised about the condition of a motor vehicle by just looking un-der some screws,” says Bond. Dings, scratches, and little rusts spots demonstrate a bike that could have been ill-used.

Check Underneath the Foot pegsMotorcyclists by one means or another dependably neglect to sup-plant the foot pegs when repairing harm to a bike that fell over. They replace/repair most damage, but usually forget to check underneath the foot pegs for harm. On the off chance that a used motorcycle looks excessively clean to be genuine, check the underside for harm that was missed in a mishap repair.

Check the OwnerIn a few cases, individuals treat their vehicles better than they treat themselves. Most often, however, it’s about the same. Chances are that if the individual who is offering the used bike is obscure or hesi-tant in answering questions, there are problems. Also, if possible, take a look at the owner’s house and yard, as it gives more informa-tion about his/her wellbeing, appearance and level of care.

Discover Why?Bond points out that the owner is selling the motorcycle for a rea-son, but you have to figure out why. “Is the owner in need of cash to pay off expenses, excessive speeding tickets, or to purchase another bike? Maybe the owner has a newborn and cannot foresee him/her-self riding anymore. These are the questions you need to get answers to,” says Bond. The reason for the sale may also be an indicator of how the bike was ridden.

Check the Tires for Uneven WearBe cautious if the tires on the bike show uneven wear as they may indicate suspension issues. Ask the owner when the tires were last replaced and judge if the wear is reasonable.

Ride the BikeRemember that it’s your money that you’re surrendering when you purchase a used bike, so you have the right to test ride it. Testing a motorcycle is all about how it feels when riding: is it stable at vari-ous speeds, is acceleration smooth, is there anything rattling, are the

brakes responsive, and do you feel comfortable on it are just some of the questions to keep in mind while test riding.

Start it ColdAccording to Bond, if possible, feel that the motorcycle is cold when you first start it. A warm bicycle may shroud a ton of issues than when it’s cold. Bond suggests that when starting the bike cold, “listen for a miss, irregular exhaust sounds or any unexpected clicks or clamors,” because they could be signs of carburetor, ignition, or fuel injection problems, at the least.

Check Headlights and TaillightsFaint lamps, whether at the front or rear, usually point to a poor charging electrical framework that can get extravagant. Perceiving this will help you bring down possible future expenses.

Check Underneath for LeaksThis sounds basic enough, right? But most sellers who know there is a problem leak will park it away from its normal spot so you can’t see it. Get down and check underneath for oil stains or leaks.

Go With Your Gut FeelingBusiness choices are usually made with the mind while purchas-ing choices are made with the heart. After you ride and completely check the bike, go with your instinct. If it feels right, buy it, but at the same time, be able to walk away from the used bike if it doesn’t feel right. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a bike that’s been cherished more than a lady.

Most of know that motor oil is the lifeblood of any car, and without it, your car would face a huge number of problems. Motor oil stops all the metal surfaces in your engine from grinding together and tearing themselves apart from friction. In addition, motor oil transfers heat away from the combustion cycle as well as cleans and inhibits corro-sion in the engine.

The key part of motor oil is its viscosity. Viscosity is how thin or thick a substance is and motor oil has to operate in both cold and hot temperatures. All oils are given a viscosity rating which is determined by how quickly it flows out of a specifically sized hole. The faster it flows, the lower the rating it gets. Thus, a lower rating means it flows faster (thus is thinner) whereas a higher rating means it flows slower (thus is thicker). When heated, oil thins out and when cooled it gets thicker. Your engine needs oil that is thin enough for cold starts (starting outside in winter, for example) but thick enough for when the engine is hot.

Motor oil comes in either single or multi-grade forms. These are similar to the dif-ferences between winter and all-season tires. Single grade oil should primarily only be used in the summer or consistently warm climates whereas multi-grade functions well under a variety of temperatures. For this reason, it is better to use multi-grade oil as

opposed to single grade. All oil comes with a labelled grade, such as 5W40. What this means is that, this oil will behave like a 5-rated single grade in the cold (W designates winter) and as a 40-rated single grade oil when hot. The lower the winter number, the easier the engine will start in cold con-ditions. Usually the recommended grade oil is indicated in the owner’s manual or under the hood on the oil fi ll cap.

It’s important to follow the manu-facturer’s recommendations grade level(s) whenever you are changing your vehicle’s oil. In addition, it’s equally important to follow the rec-ommended oil change interval be-cause each motor vehicle has differ-ent requirements. As most experts will tell you, a proper and timely oil change is one of the most important ways to prolong the life of your car.

During the last weekend of July, DRK Magazine was invited to the Aston Martin Designed to be Driven Tour, which took place at vari-ous venues in Vancouver. Our editor, Jag Dhatt, along with members of the review team, had the opportunity to get behind the wheels of the 2014 DB Volante, Rapide S, and Vanquish Volante at this exclu-sive event.

Over a period of two days, we got intimate with the three Astons, driving them through the streets of Vancouver, Stanley Park, and on

some nice open stretches. What can be said about the Aston Martins that hasn’t been said before – exceptional design and engineering, hand-built, a proud pedigree and race-inspired history, and the ulti-mate in luxury. Even though the Vanquish Volante is the flagship, we enjoyed the DB Volante the most.

DRK Magazine would like to thank the Designed to be Driven Tour team and of course, Aston Martin Vancouver for the invitation.

On Wednesday August 20th, DRK Magazine was invited to the 2014 Ducati Monster 821 launch party at Ducati Richmond. The launch party drew a huge gathering, filled with bikes, leathers, helmets, and a yummy BBQ. New for 2014, this Monster is powered by an 821 cc twin cylinder Testrastretta, providing 112 hp. There is no mistaking the familiar voice of the V-Twin exhaust.DRK Magazine thanks Jamie Nicholls and his team for the invitation and a great event.

NEW MILLENIUM TIRES & WHEELS

(NC) – No matter where you drive, you never know when something could go wrong. It could be a fl at tire, getting stuck in traffi c, an accident, a car break down, or sliding into a ditch on a less travelled road. This is why it is important to always be pre-pared and part of being prepared involves having an emergency kit.

Having an emergency kit in your car can be very helpful when you are in a bind. While some people overlook its importance because they rely on road side assistance, the reality is that you never know how long it will take for help to arrive.

“Even if you have road side assistance coverage you may have to wait a while for help to arrive, especially in poor weather con-ditions,” says Achiel Goossens, the senior manager of auto claims with Aviva Canada. “An emergency kit can help make things more comfortable while you are waiting for help to arrive.”

While there is no limit to what items you can include in your emergency kit, there are a number of things that Goossens sug-gests you need. These items include:

• A cell phone (if you don’t carry one with you);• A fi rst aid kit;• Bottled water and snacks;• A blanket, gloves, and additional warm clothing for the win

ter months;• Flashlight and batteries;• Tire gauge and jumper cables;• A small tool kit.

This is a minimum. Depending on your specifi c situation, you may include other items based on your driving frequency and the climate where you drive.

Regardless of how often and where you drive, having an emer-gency kit is common sense. If you don’t have one already, invest-ing in one is not only important, it could be a lifesaver. More detailed information is available from your insurance broker.

Toyota Approved to Self-inspect and ManufactureHydrogen Tanks for FCVs

MEXICO CITY - South Korea’s Kia Motors Corp. said Wednesday it will invest more than $1 billion to build a car factory in northern Mexico that is expected to begin production in 2016.

The company said the new plant in Nuevo Leon state, across the border from Texas, will have the capacity to make 300,000 cars a year.

Kia’s announcement follows several by other car companies planning to expand or build new factories in Mexico.

Last month, Germany’s BMW said it will spend $1 billion to build a new luxury car factory in San Luis Potosi state that will start production in 2019 as part of an effort to expand the company’s presence in the United States. BMW’s announcement came a week after Daimler and Renault-Nissan said they would spend $1.6 billion on a fac-tory in Mexico to make premium compact cars for the Infiniti and Mercedes brands.

Kia vice chairman Lee Hyoung-Keun said this will be the company’s first car fac-tory in Mexico. Kia has five others car factories outside South Korea.

“Mexico has acquired unique experience during its integration into global value chains, especially in the automotive industry,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said.

Mexico is a favourite spot for car makers, thanks in part to its relatively low wages, proximity to the United States and several free trade agreements with 45 countries.

Toyota City, Japan (August 29, 2014) ― Toyota Motor Corporation has received approval from Japan’s Ministry of Econ-omy, Trade and Industry (METI) to self-inspect and manufacture high-pressure hy-drogen tanks for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). This makes Toyota the first company to become a registered manufacturer of 70 MPa (700 bar) hydrogen tanks under Ja-pan’s High Pressure Gas Safety Act, revised in 1997 by METI. Toyota will now be able to increase the efficiency of the process of manufacturing safe high-pressure hydrogen tanks that ensure customer confidence.

Under the Act, all containers and ac-cessories for storing gases at pressures of 1 MPa (10 bar) and above must be type-certified by METI, and are subject-ed to witnessed inspections by the High Pressure Gas Safety Institute of Japan (KHK) during the manufacturing process. Hydrogen tanks require an additional in-spection upon completion. Since the tanks cannot be used in vehicle assembly until they pass these inspections, until now, KHK inspectors were required to be pres-

ent during the manufacture of hydrogen tanks for Toyota’s various test vehicles, such as the Toyota FCHV-adv. This, in turn, meant that tank inventory control and manufacturing plans, in addition to broad-er FCV production plans, needed to be ad-justed around tank inspection schedules.

Due to ongoing plans to bring an FCV sedan to market in Japan before April

2015, Toyota applied to register as a con-tainer manufacturer in order to be able to self-inspect and manufacture high-pres-sure hydrogen tanks. To receive approval, a company must meet KHKS 0102, a set of stringent criteria containing 194 re-

quirements set forth by KHK, and must demonstrate that it possesses a high-level manufacturing quality management sys-tem.

To meet the KHKS 0102 criteria, Toyota developed a quality manual and container inspection rules based on its extensive quality management expertise, and es-tablished a fully documentable hydrogen

tank quality management system that extends to affiliated parts companies. In June, following KHK’s onsite au-dit of its high-pressure hydrogen tank production process, Toyota was judged to have met KHKS 0102 criteria. The following month, Toyota submitted an application to the Chubu Kinki Indus-trial Safety and Inspection Department to request approval from METI.

With this approval, Toyota will be able to manufacture tanks using in-

house inspectors, without the need of witnessed inspections by KHK. Toyota believes this will lead to improved manu-facturing efficiency for high-pressure hy-drogen tanks, and to productivity improve-ments and cost reductions for FCVs.
