Driving Away the Cold Fact Sheet/Talking Points

• Driving Away the Cold is a philanthropic effort of the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation that started in 2008.

• As it has for the past ten years, the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation will jump start the 2018 Driving Away the Cold program with a donation of thousands of new child-size coats to be distributed this fall through local branches of the YMCA.

• To complement the Foundation’s effort, Dealer Members are invited to support the program by donating a new coat for each car sold in their dealerships during the month of September. We will give 51,500 coats in 2018.

• In just elelven years, the program has given the gift of a new winter coat to more than 365,000 children. That totals more than $5.7 million in giving. WOW!

• The Foundation and all the participating dealerships give brand NEW winter coats to local children in need. They do not donate used coats. They purchase and donate new winter coats, which are $16.50 each. Every cent donated goes towards the purchase of these coats. For most of the recipients, this new coat will be the only new piece of clothing they will get this year.

• The coats are distributed two ways. Dealers deliver the new coats to their selected non-profit themselves, or they opt to have the Foundation distribute them where the need is greatest. Overall, more than 200 social service agencies, school districts, homeless shelters and area YMCAs help the Foundation get these coats to children who need them most.

• The Foundation believes in this program because warmth and comfort for a child should be a staple, not a luxury.

• A few large delivery and distribution events are planned for October. Volunteer registration will be available on the Members section of MoreThanAutoDealers.com.

• Your dealership can raise money to help the Foundation purchase even more coats by creating a customizable online fundraising page that can be shared with customers, vendors and employees. Go to http://bit.ly/DRIVEAWAYCOLD2018 to set up your account. (URL is case sensitive)

Displaying rearview mirror hang tags, car toppers, table tents and window signs is a great way to raise awareness.

Rally your employeesDoes your staff know what the POP materials represent? Encourage them to feel great about the place they work with a quick staff meeting to introduce them to Driving Away the Cold. All the information you’ll need is on the back of this flyer! Spread the word to employees through an email or a newsletter. Or, how about inserting something with their next payroll stub? Your proud employees can become ambassadors of the initiative, inherently increasing awareness amongst customers.

Keep your foot traffic in the loopOur POP kit contains colorful window signs, car and table tents and rearview mirror hang tags. All of these materials promote your participation in the program. Remember, more eyes equal more awareness!

Create a customer connectionLet your customers know their purchase helps the dealership buy new coats by asking them to sign one of the colorful cut-outs. Get creative with how these are displayed in your showroom or devise a competition amongst your staff.

See and be seenDealership representatives can experience Driving Away the Cold in action by volunteering at an event. We’ll host large coat deliveries and distributions in October. Volunteers can help unload trucks during a delivery to a YMCA or help children select their new coat during a distribution event. These are terrific public relations opportunities as members of the press will be invited too. Be sure your dealership is represented!
