3D printing: a paradigm shift in medicine
Digital design, robotic fabrication and material technologies are bringing about a paradigm shift in the medical world.
We are moving away from serial production towards personalized production, from copies towards iterations.
Our objective is to explore, develop and produce new medical treatment methods (human spare parts) using computational design, robotic fabrication and surgery combined with novel material technologies and human stem cells.
The 3D innovation lab operates in a cross disciplinary manner by interconnecting the expertise of doctors, scientists and designers along with technological industries
3D printing in the VUmc
Example of a new treatment approach: Slipped capital femural epiphysis
Virtual 3D planning of Southwick osteotomy

The role of design in medical research is changing
!
Advanced imaging modalities e.g. functional imaging or fiber tracking (MRI) Optical 3D scanners
Virtual modeling & design Finite element analysis Parametric design
3D printing (smart materials, scaffolds & stem cells)
Big data & personalized medicine
Example: The helmet project
Every year, > 7000 people in NL are seriously injured in traffic accidents
