Pedestrians are at a major disadvan-tage when it comes
to going up against a large, heavy vehicle. Chances are, should a collision occur, the vehicle will win. That is why pedestrians should be on guard when shar-ing the road.
There are many laws that indicate that driv-ers should yield to pedestrians. However, such laws aren’t always heeded. Pedestrians should always be on guard because it can be difficult for drivers to see a person on the side
of the road, crossing an intersection, or traversing the streets.
Use sidewalksWhenever possible, walk on sidewalks; that’s what they were built for, anyway. It is
always safer to walk on a sidewalk than in the roadway.
Use caution at cornersTrucks make wide turns and sometimes run up on the curb. Keep a safe distance from the street when waiting at a corner to cross.
Follow crossing signalsUse lights and crossing signals as guides for when it is safe to cross the roadway. However, also use common sense and double-check that the intersection is safe before stepping off the curb.
Cross in front of vehiclesAll vehicles have blind spots, and trucks offer poorer visibility than smaller cars. It is up to the pedestrian to keep away from blind spots and make himself or herself seen at all times. The safest way to do this is to cross in front of ve-hicles instead of behind.
Use caution at intersectionsPedestrians may assume an approaching car or truck can see them crossing at an intersec-tion. However, sun glare, rain or other weather can impair vision. Pe-destrians should safely assume they cannot be seen and make sure all vehicles come to a complete stop before crossing.
Brighten up at nightWhen walking at night or at dusk/dawn, always wear bright, reflective clothing. Carry a flash-light for even more vis-ibility.
Walk against trafficIf there are no sidewalks available, pedestrians should walk on the side of the road that puts them facing traffic. This way the walker can move out of the way and see oncoming traffic.
New car own-ers often place a premium
on protecting their cars from thieves, but thieves tend to prefer older vehicles. Accord-ing to the National Insurance Crime Bu-reau, the most stolen car in 2010 was the 1994 Honda Accord. And that top spot was not an aberration. The 1995 Honda Civic was the second most stolen car in 2010, finishing one spot ahead of the 1991 Toyota Camry. The NICB notes improved
anti-theft technology as one of the main reasons for declining theft rates, which dropped 7.2 percent between 2009 and 2010. That improved technology
is likely a big reason why thieves are tar-geting older vehicles that don’t benefit from those improvements. One of the more influ-ential technological advancements that’s helped reduce auto theft is an electronic chip in newer cars. These chips prevent usable keys from being easily made at a hard-ware store, meaning a car thief won’t be able to start the car even with a copied key.

People born between 1946 and 1954, collectively known as Baby Boomers, are trad-
ing in their family vehicles for something with a little more pow-er -- sports cars. When the nest is empty (and sometimes before), the vehicle of choice becomes a sporty, fast little ride that may be the envy of all who see it.
Baby Boomers tend to have a higher income and/or a surplus in savings after retirement and choose to expend some funds on a car that will make waves. Con-vertibles are a popular choice among this demographic, as are other roadsters that turn heads. Here are some of the more popu-lar models you’ll see cruising the roadways with Boomers behind the wheel, according to statistics from TrueCar.com.
Chevrolet CorvetteThe quintessential American sports car, Corvettes are especial-ly popular among Baby Boomers. Boomers flock to Corvettes more than any other age group, with nearly 64 percent of buyers be-longing to the Boomer generation.
Volvo C70A turbo-charged, 5-cylinder engine provides enough power to give a thrill to many Boomers. And with a convertible top op-tion, it’s possible to have a breeze running through their receding hairlines, too.
Mercedes Benz SLIf it’s status and substance that Boomers desire, then there’s no looking beyond a Mercedes. Af-fluent Baby Boomers can enjoy a V8 engine and plenty of electrical gadgets to make their rides fun.
BMW 6 Series ConvertibleAnother premier car for the elite Boomer, the BMW sees 80 percent
of its sales going toward Boom-ers. The 6 series is quick and has understated good looks, which also helps the vehicle serve as a status symbol for those behind the wheel.
Porsche BoxterFor those who have always as-pired to be behind the wheel of a Porsche, the Boxter is small and sporty, perfect for handling the turns on the way to a country win-ery or maneuvering around traffic in an urban setting.
According to industry experts, Baby Boomers have long driven the direction of the automotive industry. Many desire to stay away from the brands and styles their parents drove, preferring some-thing with more pep and style.
In addition to the makes and models mentioned, CNW Market-ing Research, a firm that looks at the reasons behind car purchases, says Boomers make purchases not only for the style of the car but also for the image the brand offers.
Form and fashion drives the purchase of many Baby Boomers looking for a new vehicle. With more disposable income, many can afford to splurge on a car that is sporty and will garner “oohs” and “ahhs” from others.
The Lexus SC 430 convertible is one of the many sports cars that Baby Boomers tend to gravitate toward.
Baby boomers prefer sports cars
CNW Marketing Research lists these vehicles as other popular purchases among Baby Boomers.
