DRIVE BY WIRE TECHNOLOGY
Emerging technology in the automobile environment.
Replaces the traditional mechanical control system by the modern electronic control systems.
System reduces number of moving parts.Intermediate shafts pumps , hoses , belts
, coolers and master cylinders are eliminated.
INTRODUCTION
Drive by wire system can be called as “ a computer network with a car wrapped around it”.
1995-BMW technic began working on the project Z 22 TO CHANGE carbon fibre structure to drive by wire .
1998-aircraft technology using computerised joystick .
2002-HY WIRE car by general motors .2009-Wire “de assault systems solid works” releases .
HISTORY
2010-introduces sensors for the paddle
Drive by wire works on the electro-mechanical control system.
Main controlling system is ECM or ENGINE CONTROL MODULE
SENSORS send signals to ECM and ACTUATOR actuates.
ECM is connected to several systems.
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF DRIVE BY WIRE
ECM
ECM controls the signal and circulates the signal to suitable system.
STEER BY WIRETHROTTLE BY WIREBRAKE BY WIRE
DRIVE BY WIRE CAN BE SUB DIVIDED INTO:-
No direct mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheel of vehicle.
STEER BY WIRE:-
Angle of the steering rod is sensed by the sensorECM recieves the signal of the sensorEnviromental sensors analyse enviromental factors
like yaw , roll over position.Using all these inputs tiers are actuated using
steering sensors and actuators .
Advantages of steer by wire:- interior styling is more versatile due to absence
of steering column.There is more space available in the engine
compartment.0
Driving characteristics can be monitored and the steering response can be easily adjusted.
Automotive technology that is widely used today on vehicle replaces the traditional throttle linkage by cables.
THROTTLE BY WIRE:-
Accelerator sensor senses the position of the accelerator paddle
ECM actuates the servo pump which actuates the butterfly valve by electronically operated throttle .
Position of throttle is continuously monitored by the ECM .
Information is send to the ECM by using a feed back circuit.
IT helps in controlling the air fuel ratio ,Fuel consumption
The ETC is also working 'behind the scenes' to dramatically improve the ease with which the driver can execute gear changes and deal with the dramatic torque changes associated with rapid accelerations and decelerations.
It helps in maintaining the stability of a vechile
ADVANTAGES OF THROTTLE BY WIRE :-
Eliminates traditional mechanical and hydrulic components .
Replaces them with electronic sensors and actuators to control the brakes in the vehicle
BRAKE BY WIRE:-
Consists of a rheostat that senses the position of the brake paddle .
ADVANTAGES OF BRAKE BY WIRE:-Reacts more quickly resulting in shorter stopping distance
and time .Loss of mechanical systems results in noiseless operation
and elimination of vibrationLesser space consumed making the engine compartment
and compact and helping in better space utilizationAllows the ECM to integrate torque management with

It has been suggested that Drive by Wire might allow a car to become completely separate from its controls, meaning that a car of the future might theoretically be controlled by any number of different control systems: push buttons, joysticks, steering wheels, or even voice commands - whatever device that designers could come up with.
