SGT. Glew is a 14-year veteran who spoke to the crowd briefly about some of his experi- ences and travels while serving his country. A combat veteran of both the Iraq and Afghanistan war, serving three tours, Glew was also deployed to South Korea at Camp Red Cloud. Currently serving at Fort Polk, Louisiana Glew also saw service time in Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where he completed his Basic Combat Training. After completing his training Glew was stationed at his first duty station in Fort Polk, and was later assigned to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. While in the Army, Sgt. Glew’s MOS was a wheeled vehicle mechanic, for which he has become highly decorated. After Glew had concluded his address to the audience, two Oelwein eighth graders took the stage. Holly Rose Rubin and Laura Kathryn Gibbs serenaded the audience by singing a duet rendition of “In Flanders Field.” When their song had concluded, Oelwein High Schoolers John Leo and Nick Stasi took turns on stage reading off the names of those veterans who had passed away since last Memorial Day. As one of the students read the names the other rang a bell in symphony. During this time the crowd that had gathered to pay their respects became very solemn and silent. The names read included: Eldon Wardell, Clyde Watson, John Rueber, Rodney Wayne, Ray Michels, Wayne Shannon, John Kisner, Bob Rechkemmer, Stan, Kuch, Richard Furleigh, Art Orlowski, Dennis Arthur, Irvin Dingbaum, Don Lamphier, Dutch Troupe, Lester Hettinger, Bill Simpson, Roy Johnston, and Stan Wall. When Leo and Stasi had finished reading the names of those who had passed on, American Legion Auxiliary Ross Reid #9 member Sharon Link, per- formed the laying of the wreaths to fur- ther honor those who have served. To conclude the memorial service the Legion Honor Guard performed a rifle salute as Oelwein High School Band students Sammie Paul and Taylor Gish played taps on their trumpets. Pastor John Bock followed up the rifle salute and playing of taps by reading the closing Benediction prayer and ending the day’s memorial services.
