THE CASE FOR THE NEW DREAM

The DREAM Act defeat in the US Senate is a huge set back for millions of students and Hispanic supporters

DREAM Act failed by only 5 votes in the Senate

Under the DREAM Act 1.8 million sons and daughters of undocumented immigrants who would qualify for citizenship

To qualify undocumented immigrants would have to be in the US before age 16, no criminal record, lived in the US at least 5 years and completed two years of college or military service

After meeting the requirements they would have to wait 6 years to apply for citizenship

The DREAM Act makes sense: A responsible way for the US

to start dealing with the illegal immigration problem in the US

Keep bright undocumented immigrants in the US to improve themselves and the country

Give young children who didn’t break the law a chance to reach the American Dream

Ethically it is the right thing to do. After being in the shadows all their lives they need an opportunity in life to end the cycle of poverty.

Research shows that providing young people with legal status with a record of success would be a boon for the economy and US workforce.

Department of Defense supports the DREAM Act. Would improve US military by recruiting the top students.

IT’S NOT OVER YET… President Obama says that his

biggest disappointment is seeing th DREAM Act fail but promises to continue to fight for it as long as he is President of the US.

"Maybe my biggest disappointment" "I'm persistent…we should be able to

get the Dream Act done.“ –Obama DREAM act has many supports

including for presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton.

All experts the DREAM Act will pass, but probably not in the next two years with a republican controlled house. It is inevitable in the future however because it has strong bipartisan support but gets attacked by anti-immigrant groups with their wedge issues.
