Sir Francis Drake was born in 1540 Devon, England, the oldest of eleven sons. He was the son of Edmund Drake who was a farmer.

Drake was a fierce warrior because at that time his country (England) was at war with Spain. He helped defend England from the Spanish Armada in 1588.

His voyage started in 1577 and lasted for 3 years. He was told by Queen Elizabeth I to travel around the world. Unfortunately he died in 1596 of a tropical fever near the coast of Panama. Nowadays lots of statues are built to honour SIR FRANCIS DRAKE.
