The SUNY Oneonta men’s soccer team, led by SUNYAC Coach of the Year Iain Byrne, played to its most successful season to date in Division III. The Red Dragons finished 21-1-2 overall while advancing to its second national championship weekend in the last four years. The squad set a single season record with its 21 wins and, up to the national semifinal, established a program record of 23 games without a loss. Along the way, the Red and White also set a new mark for best start to a season at 13-0-2 with a 1-0 victory over Hamilton on October 21. The men jumped out to a 5-0 start to the season that included four shutouts. Following a 4-0 victory over Ithaca in the first game of the season, the Red and White put together a 1-0 victory against the RIT Tigers and 4-0 victory over the Babson Beavers to claim this year’s Mayor’s Cup. In mid-September, a pair of nationally ranked opponents in then #20 Rochester and then #14 RPI challenged the squad. Following a 0-0 draw with Rochester, junior Jake Sutherland lifted the Red Dragons to a 1-0 victory against the Engineers of RPI. Oneonta entered SUNYAC play towards the end of September hoping to jump out early. Its only blemish came in the opening weekend with a thrilling 2-2 tie against its rivals from SUNY Cortland. The Red Dragons cruised the rest of the way through conference play finishing with an 8-0-1 record to capture the regular season title. As the top seed for the conference tournament, the Red and White earned a first round bye before putting up yet another four goal performance in a shutout win over Geneseo in the semifinals to set up another show down with Cortland for the conference title. In the championship, Sutherland again would play hero, as his goal in the 67th minute would lift Oneonta to a 2-1 win. With the automatic NCAA bid locked up, the Red Dragons earned a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament. In the second round they knocked off Nichols College by a score of 2-0. After being held scoreless for 80 minutes, freshman Cory Santangelo and Sutherland scored less than two minutes apart to lead Oneonta to victory. The following weekend, Oneonta hosted the sectional round where they would defeat #15 Franklin and Marshall 2-1 and #5 Brandeis 3-0 to advance to the Final Four in Kansas City, Mo. The Red Dragons’ season came to a close with a heart-breaking 3-2 double-overtime loss to Wheaton College (Ill) in the national semifinals. Sutherland and sophomore Anthony Passiatore scored the goals for Oneonta in the game. SUNYAC Rookie of the Year Cory Santangelo led the Red Dragons with 14 goals and 30 points, while Sutherland added a dozen goals and a team best seven game-winning goals. Conference Player of the Year, junior Dylan Williams, dished out a team-leading eight assists. Goalkeeper Vincent Pellegrino had an amazing season finishing with a 17-1-1 record overall and setting a single season record of 13 shutouts. He was amongst the national leaders all season long and finished fifth in goals against average. SUNY Oneonta women’s cross country finishes 24th at NCAA championships
The SUNY Oneonta women’s cross country team ended its 2014 sea-son with a 24th place finish at the NCAA Division III championships held at King’s Island Golf Center in Mason, OH on Nov. 22. The Red Dragons, who were nationally ranked all fall and as high as 10th, improved one spot from its 25th place finish of last year.
The Red Dragons didn’t have a finisher in the top-100 and scored 605 points for its efforts. The 2014 national championship went to Johns Hopkins, who scored 87 points. The appearance for Oneonta was its second consecutive showing at the national championships.
“The course was in rough shape after the men’s race and we didn’t adjust our race plan appropriately to account for that and as a result we were a little too far back through the halfway mark,” said coach Angelo Posillico. “We moved well in the second half of the race but the mud made it really difficult for the girls to make the moves they are normally capable of.”
Sophomore Alyssa Drapeau was Oneonta’s first finisher in 108th place, but 82nd in the team scoring. She crossed the finish line of the championship 6K course in a time of 23:17.
Following Drapeau was classmate Rachael Shine in 160th place, 117th in the team scoring. She ran 23:38 in the race.
Runners three through seven for Oneonta were senior Marielle Genovesi (164th, 121st), junior Mary Kate Bida (184th, 140th), seniors Brianna McLoughlin (189th, 145th) and Jaclyn Masucci (194th, 150th) and junior Deirdre Davis (261st, 206th).
Posillico concluded, “Our goal is to create a national experience for our top runners every year, so it’s really great to have three seniors finish their career here today. We have a lot of young talent and a great recruiting class in the works, which keeps me confident that we will continue to improve as a program. It’s been an emotional season for the girls with a lot of highs and lows. These women have devel-oped a ton of confidence over the last few months and that means the world to me as their coach. I’m proud of what they accomplished as a team and the support they’ve given each other as teammates. I’m excited for track season and to watch these women continue to improve and achieve.”
Other highlights for the Red Dragons this fall included a program-best third place finish at the Atlantic Region championships and a second place at the SUNYAC championships.
At the Regional championships, Drapeau, McLoughlin, Bida, Genovesi and sophomore Rachael Shine all earned All-Region hon-ors.
Tracey Ranieri Honored by New York State Legislature
State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) presented SUNY Oneonta Director of Athletics, Tracey Ranieri, with a New York State Legislative Resolution in honor of her selection as an Under Armour Division III Athletic Director of the Year this past spring. The resolution was presented in the Executive Conference Room of the President in front of a small gathering of campus dignitaries this past Monday.
“Tracey Ranieri’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence is unparalleled and her leadership has raised the bar for all SUNY Oneonta coaches and student-athletes,” said Senator Seward. “Her dedication and talents are terrific assets for the greater Oneonta community and the entire SUNY system and I am extremely pleased to add a New York State Resolution to her trophy case.”
Earlier this year, Ranieri was selected as an Under Armour Division III Athletic Director of the Year as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Ranieri was one of 28 national winners and one of four in Division III selected for the honor.
“Tracey does an outstanding job of leading intercollegiate athletics on our campus,” said College President Dr. Nancy Kleniewski. “She helps coaches and athletes keep the appropriate balance between sports and academics. She has a genuine interest in the personal development of student athletes.”
Ranieri is in her eighth year as SUNY Oneonta’s athletic director and has worked at the college for 22 years, including 16 years as the women’s soccer coach.
“We are very proud of the work Tracey has done as the Athletic Director,” said Vice President for Student Development Dr. Steve Perry. “Her commitment to Division III athletics and her involvement on the national level with the NCAA has made her a leader amongst her peers. She is passionate about the entire student-athlete experience and what we like to call “winning with character”.
Senate resolution 5477 honoring Ranieri was adopted on May 29, 2014. Assemblyman Bill Magee sponsored the same resolution in the assembly.
“I am very grateful for the honor Senator Seward and Assemblyman Magee bestowed on the SUNY Oneonta Athletic Department coaches and staff in the NYS Senate Resolution,” said Ranieri. “Oneonta is a great place with so many talented, caring, positive and committed professionals and the coaches at Oneonta are second to none. Everyday has a new challenge and the best is still yet to come.”

Athletics Hosts Honors WeekendDuring the weekend of Sep. 12-14, the athletics department hosted an incredible weekend of events that included its Hall of Fame induction and Dining for Champions fundraiser on Saturday and the retirement of former baseball coach, Don Axtell’s No. 14 on Sunday. Well over 250 people attended the Hall of Fame event, where they witnessed the induction of the 16th class that included six former student athletes. In the evening, the department hosted its most successful Dining for Champions fundraiser to date with over 200 people in attendance. The event raised in excess of 43,000 dollars to benefit student ath-lete travel and facility enhancements. On Sunday, many former baseball players came back to honor their former coach, as the No. 14 was retired. The ceremony took place on the baseball field that Axtell built and nurtured during his 30 years as the head baseball coach. Speakers at the ceremony included three former captains, Rick Yandoli ‘77, Jim Lozano ‘82 and Brooks Alexander ‘94. All three reflected on their experiences as a member of the baseball program and thanked Axtell for being a role model of excellence. Afterwards there was a reception where more former players were able to speak in tribute to a man who meant so much to them during their four years as student athletes. Many players spoke candidly about the impact that Axtell still has on their lives from the lessons and principles they learned from him.
A video was put together that captured both the jersey retirement ceremony and the reception that has been posted to the athletics department YouTube channel.
