1. POLICYThe College of Health and Wellbeing staff are committed to the development

and acquisition of practice skills in a supportive simulated clinical

environment. The teaching strategies employed within the clinical skills

laboratories relate theory to practice; these include practical demonstrations,

role play, simulation exercises, Objective Structured Clinical Examinations

(OSCEs) and case-study based practical examinations. The clinical skills

laboratories are for the sole purpose of the demonstration and /or teaching of

practical skills.

The practice skills laboratories are arranged as follows:

Greenbank 102a: This laboratory is equipped with a bed that has simulated

oxygen and suction in that area. The laboratory offers space for small skills

groups to practice manual handling, basic life support, hand washing and

personal care. It is ideal for the weekly drop-in sessions. This laboratory has a

ceiling mounted camera allowing the filming and recording of examinations

and simulation sessions.

Greenbank 102b: The largest skills laboratory, comprising a simulated ward

area with eight bays and beds. It is equipped with simulated oxygen and

suction at each bed area and is ideally suited for training larger groups of

students, for example resuscitation training, moving and handling, drug

administration, asepsis, hand washing and personal care. The area has four

nursing manikins and a medium fidelity ‘Juno’ manikin for practical training

purposes, four BLS manikins and has the equipment required for moving and

handling including: Arjo electric hoist, wheel chairs and aids that assist with

handling techniques. This laboratory contains eight ceiling mounted cameras

allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation sessions.

Greenbank 109: Pre-hospital care. This skills laboratory contains two beds

and three bays. It also contains the simulated ambulance which is built to

scale, equipped as an operational vehicle and is used to reflect a realistic

working environment. Due to the restricted working space in an ambulance

there is a camera allowing all students and staff to view the activity within the

ambulance during a simulated skills session. These images are displayed on

the large screen within the skills laboratory. The area has four patient transfer

trolleys accommodating four medium fidelity manikins. The laboratory is

equipped with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area, BLS manikins,

a drugs trolley and a full range of moving & handling equipment which allows

the laboratory to be used for all other clinical skills. It has three ceiling

mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations and

simulation sessions.

Greenbank 111: Critical Care. This laboratory maybe equipped as a

simulated operating theatre used for the teaching and acquisition of practice

skills applicable to operating department students. The area has three bays

equipped with two beds, ventilator and an operating table. A scrub sink is

installed and simulated oxygen and suction are also available. The laboratory

is equipped with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area, BLS

manikins, a drugs trolley and a full range of moving & handling equipment

which allows the laboratory to be used for all other clinical skills. It has four

ceiling mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations

and simulation sessions.

Greenbank 115: Neonatal and children’s nursing. The laboratory has three

bays equipped with two hospital beds and a neonatal care incubator with

several infant and child manikins available. The laboratory is equipped with

simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area, BLS manikins, two drugs

trolleys and a full range of moving & handling equipment which allows the

laboratory to be used for all other clinical skills. It has three ceiling mounted

cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation

sessions.

Greenbank 117: This laboratory is a dedicated high fidelity simulation suite. It

is equipped with two adult interactive high fidelity simulators, CAE Apollo.

The laboratory also has two infant and one child simulators. There is also a

tetherless high fidelity child simulator, Gaumard Infant Hal. All these manikins

are realistic physiological models which can be pre-programmed to create life-

like medical scenarios. The manikins can respond automatically through

dedicated software to clinical interventions, creating realistic learning

experiences. Simulated oxygen and suction are also available. Other

specialist equipment in this laboratory includes an electrocardiograph monitor

and a cardiac arrest trolley with defibrillator. It has five ceiling mounted

cameras allowing the filming and recording of examinations and simulation

sessions.

Greenbank 119: This laboratory has six bays equipped with plinths. A scrub

sink is installed and simulated oxygen and suction are also available. The

laboratory is equipped with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area,

BLS manikins, which allows the laboratory to be used for all other clinical

skills. It has six ceiling mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of

examinations and simulation sessions.

Greenbank 177: This laboratory is best suited to midwifery / neonatal and

sexual health skills teaching and contains manikins, anatomical models and

equipment required for these specialities. It is equipped with an adult

interactive high fidelity simulator, Laerdal SimMom. This manikin is an

advanced full body interactive birthing simulator that can respond

automatically through dedicated software to clinical interventions, creating

realistic learning experiences. This manikin is equipped with an automatic

delivery module allowing hands free birthing scenarios to take place. There is

also a newborn baby, Laerdal SimNewB, which is used to deliver high

specification simulated training for neonatal care. The laboratory has two

birthing hospital beds, one other hospital bed and two life-size birthing

manikins along with a neonatal resuscitaire. A scrub sink is installed and

simulated oxygen and suction are also available. The laboratory is equipped

with simulated oxygen and suction at each bed area, BLS manikins, a drugs

trolley and a full range of moving & handling equipment which allows the

laboratory to be used for all other clinical skills.

It has three ceiling mounted cameras allowing the filming and recording of

examinations and simulation sessions.

Greenbank 174: This laboratory is a human anatomy resource centre

containing a wide selection of anatomical models. It has an Anatomage

virtual anatomy table which shows full 3D anatomy that can be intuitively

controlled.

Greenbank 175: This laboratory is a human anatomy resource centre

containing a wide selection of anatomical models. It has an Anatomage

virtual anatomy table which shows full 3D anatomy that can be intuitively

controlled.

Greenbank 179: Consultation Room 1 This consultation room can be used

for one to one history taking sessions, patient examination and other small

surgery consultations.

Greenbank 181: Consultation Room 2 This consultation room can be used

for one to one history taking sessions, patient examination and other small

surgery consultations.

Greenbank 182: Simulated flat with living and separate sleeping area This flat emulates a small home environment and can be used for scenarios

allowing students to experience working in a restricted, community based

setting.

SCOPE

This Policy applies to all university personnel, visitors and students involved in

the use of the Greenbank skills laboratory suite.

3. GENERAL PRINCIPLESa. The facility is for the teaching of practical skills to groups of students.

b. The skills laboratories are provided for the teaching within the Faculty of

Health & Wellbeing. The rooms are not available for external bookings or

for use by other departments, unless by prior arrangement with Clinical

Skills Laboratories Manager.

c. There is zero tolerance within the Clinical Skills area to the consumption of

food and drink, other than bottled water in the clinical skills area including

laboratory corridors. Any food and drink has to be consumed outside the

Clinical Skills area. Clear signage is displayed at the entrance to the

clinical skills area as a reminder. Staff, students and visitors will be asked

to leave the area if this rule is ignored.

d. Students must not be left unsupervised in a skills laboratory. The only

exception from this is Gr179, Gr181 and Gr182. It is the responsibility of

the tutor to ensure the students leave all rooms in a tidy manner.

e. The administration of the skill laboratories is undertaken by the by the

Clinical Skills Laboratories Manager along with the Clinical Skills

Technicians. The technicians are located in room GR101.

f. Clinical Skills technicians require access to the laboratories at all times

which may include during a teaching session.

g. Academic staff and students are responsible for leaving the laboratories in

a clean and tidy state with furniture and equipment stored appropriately.

h. All rooms have on display the Laboratory Code of Conduct.

4. DROP IN SESSONSDrop in sessions take place in the Greenbank skills laboratories and are

available to all Faculty of Health & Wellbeing students.

a. The sessions run on Monday, Wednesday & Friday every week at 12:00-

12:50. The sessions are subject to cancellation at short notice.

b. Students can just drop-in to these sessions. If the students know in

advance there is a specific skill they wish to practice, they can email

Clinical Skills Technicians at [email protected] giving detail of the skill

and the requested equipment will be ready to use.

c. These sessions are for practice only and are not taught sessions.

5. ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONSa. Clinical skills laboratories are available for teaching purposes between the

hours of 08:00 - 20:00 Monday to Thursday and 08:00 - 18:00 on a Friday.

For sessions attached to a module teaching staff can book the laboratories

by contacting Central Timetabling Unit (CTU) For any ad-hoc booking not

attached to a module the booking can be made through the Clinical Skills

technicians.

b. A maximum of five laboratories may be booked at any one time for the

same cohort of students attending the same module skills session.

c. The consultation rooms and flat are bookable through CTU and the keys

are collected and returned to Gr101 by the tutor responsible for the group.

There is a key return box located outside Gr101 which is available if staff

are busy elsewhere.

d. Skills laboratories are classed as specialist teaching spaces solely for the

purpose of teaching clinical skills and are not available for traditional

classroom teaching.

e. The skills laboratories are kept locked with a keypad entry system. Users

of the laboratories have a responsibility to ensure that labs are locked after

use. In relation to Health and Safety guidelines. This code for the keypad

must not be disclosed to students.

f. All skills laboratories have filming facilities with ceiling mounted

cameras and microphones. Filming requests to the Clinical Skills

technicians requires five day’s notice using the filming request form.

6. ROOM LAYOUTDuring teaching sessions it may be necessary to alter the configurations of

equipment and furniture in the laboratories. However, to ensure health and

safety and general housekeeping all academics and students must ensure

that the chairs are stacked, surfaces left tidy and beds remade and in original

position at the end of the practical teaching session. This is for the benefit of

all users of the labs.

7. EQUIPMENT a. Before the end of August each year, module leaders should provide the

Clinical Skill technicians with consumable quantities for each individual

skill taught within their module. This is to ensure consumables are

available when required.

b. In addition, throughout the year staff requiring equipment for a skills

session should forward their requests to Clinical Skills Technicians

using the Equipment Request Form. This should be emailed to the

technicians five working days prior to their session.

c. Any equipment requested will be placed in the booked laboratory within

the Clinical Skills Suite, Greenbank building. A copy of your request

sheet will be available along with your equipment. Any equipment not

booked via the above procedure is not guaranteed to be provided for

the session.

d. Equipment required outwith the Skills Suite must be collected and

returned the same day by academic staff. Equipment that can be taken

out of a laboratory applies only to equipment that can fit into a bag for

safe transfer. Not all items are suitable for moving between buildings;

please speak to the Clinical Skills technicians if unsure. The

laboratories are accessible using key pad system to return borrowed

equipment.

e. Equipment used during a session must be checked, cleaned and

returned to containers etc. at the end of the skills session by academic

staff and students. Staff have a responsibility to report any damage or

faults to equipment or furniture to the technicians.

f. The loan of equipment to staff requires the staff member to detail, list

and sign the equipment loan request form and indicate date of return.

This form is kept in Gr101.

g. Students are not prohibited to borrow any Clinical Skills equipment.

h. Skills laboratory equipment is checked, serviced, labelled and

maintained by the Clinical skills Technicians.

i. Borrowed keys (consultation rooms, simulated flat and simulation suite)

must be collected and signed for by a staff member from Gr101.

Returned keys can be posted in the collection box outside Gr101.

8. ORDERING NEW EQUIPMENTFunds for new skills equipment are included within a procurement budget

where applicants must submit applications to be considered at a procurement

group meeting.

Clinical Skills technicians are available to help source equipment, prices, and

arrange demonstrations from manufacturers.

When requesting new equipment, consideration MUST be given to where it

will be stored and any on-going maintenance costs.

Purchase orders must be authorised and signed by the specific budget holder.

Orders of equipment costing £10,000 or more must be preceded by three

quotes in line with the University financial regulations.

9. HEALTH, SAFETY & SECURITYa. All users are responsible for their personal safety and that of students

under their direction. Academic staff also have a duty of care to the

students they are supervising

b. All users must ensure they are familiar with university health and safety

policies and procedures.

c. Accidents and incidents must be reported and recorded in accordance

with university policies. Completing the accident/incident/near miss

form is the responsibility of the supervising staff. This form is available

on the intranet.

d. Do not compromise your own health and safety and that of the

students by overcrowding the laboratories. Please remember and

adhere to the maximum number of students allocated to your

designated skills laboratory.

e. Academic staff must ensure that the skills laboratories remain locked

when not in use e.g. at breaks and upon completion of a session.

f. The skills laboratories are for the practice and simulation of skills.

Under no circumstances are live volunteers to be used for practice of

invasive procedures e.g. venepuncture and naso-gastric tube passage.

g. During skills sessions ensure vigilance in respect to the importance of

the appropriate disposal of clinical waste items. All clinical waste must

be disposed according to the University Health and Safety guidelines.

Sharps should be disposed of into sharps bins that are available in all

skills labs. The sharps disposal is coordinated by the Skills Technicians

with Estates, contact Steven Whittle.

h. Risk assessments need to be carried out prior to the purchase and/or

usage of any recently acquired equipment (new or second-hand). This

also applies to any new activities which take place within the skills

laboratories.

10. DRESS CODE Students provided with uniform are required to attend skills sessions

wearing uniform. The uniform should be freshly laundered and worn

correctly in accordance with the Uniform Policy.

Footwear should be appropriate. Appropriate footwear is well fitting,

with low, closed heel and closed toe.

If students attend practice skills sessions without appropriate uniform

or footwear, they will be asked to leave.

11. STUDENT BEHAVIOURSkills laboratories represent a simulated clinical environment. Students are

required to behave in a professional manner at all times, as in the practice

setting. The use of any photography/filming is prohibited without

permission from the skills lab manager.

Failure to behave in this way will result in students being asked to leave a

session, and may lead to disciplinary action.
