MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE TERMS FOR LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE THESAURUS FOR MUSIC DRAFT AUTHORIZED VOCABULARY FOR MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE STATEMENTS IN BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS AS AGREED ON BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND THE MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION February 2013 Introduction The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library Association, is developing a new thesaurus of terms representing vocabulary for the medium of performance of musical works, Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT). The vocabulary is intended to be used, at least initially, for two bibliographic purposes: 1) to retrieve music by its medium of performance in library catalogs, as is now done by the controlled vocabulary, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH); 2) to record the element “medium of performance” of musical works according to the cataloging standard, RDA: Resource Description and Access (RDA). The table that follows, which contains approximately 850 terms, updates the previously posted table of terms the collaborators recommend for the new medium of performance thesaurus. The table is a working document, subject to change. Background Medium of performance is now recognized as a separate and distinct bibliographic facet that should have its own vocabulary and vocabulary structure. Searches by medium should enable users to retrieve music by a particular instrument or instrumental group, voice or vocal group, or other medium of performance term or terms the searcher may specify. As presently incorporated into LCSH, medium of performance terms may occur in headings in two ways: either along with a term for genre, form, type, or style of music (as in Sonatas (Violin and piano)), or in headings that have only one or more medium terms in them (as in Violin and piano music). Eventually, Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) will contain the authorized vocabulary of terms for genre, form, type, style, etc. of music. When such music terms are implemented in LCGFT, it is envisioned that we will cease including such terms in LCSH headings. Thus, for music, LCSH will continue in the direction begun with the LCGFT initiative, to represent exclusively what a musical resource is about, leaving what the musical content of the resource is to LCGFT, and what the medium of performance is to the new medium of performance thesaurus. Intrinsic to the development of LCMPT is that the terms will be defined and their relationships to each other will be made explicit. The thesaurus will contain many terms familiar to users of LCSH, but there will be more terms than LCSH contains, and the thesaurus will sometimes use a different term from the one LCSH uses for the same concept. Once LCMPT appears in structured form and is implemented, updating will take place at the Library of Congress according to a regular schedule and with the same cooperative participation by other libraries as is now done for LCSH and LCGFT. Our intention is to use LCMPT also as a source vocabulary for RDA’s “medium of performance” element. Currently, RDA contains only a small representative selection of all of the terms that could be used for medium of performance. It should be noted that a library or other agency’s adoption of LCMPT could proceed independently from any cataloging or communications standard the library or other agency may adopt. Questions may be sent to Geraldine Ostrove, Policy and Standards Division, Library of Congress, [email protected]. Agreed Medium terms, February 2013 Page 1 of 28

DRAFT AUTHORIZED VOCABULARY FOR MEDIUM OF PERFORMANCE STATEMENTS
IN BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS AS AGREED ON BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS AND THE MUSIC LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
February 2013
Introduction
The Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Music Library Association, is developing a new thesaurus of terms representing vocabulary for the medium of performance of musical works, Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus for Music (LCMPT). The vocabulary is intended to be used, at least initially, for two bibliographic purposes:
1) to retrieve music by its medium of performance in library catalogs, as is now done by the controlled vocabulary, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH);
2) to record the element “medium of performance” of musical works according to the cataloging standard, RDA: Resource Description and Access (RDA).
The table that follows, which contains approximately 850 terms, updates the previously posted table of terms the collaborators recommend for the new medium of performance thesaurus. The table is a working document, subject to change. Background
Medium of performance is now recognized as a separate and distinct bibliographic facet that should have its own vocabulary and vocabulary structure.
