INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE
١
WHAT IS FLUIDS MECHANICS ?
¢ It is the branch of applied mechanics concerned with the statics
and dynamics of fluids - both liquids and gases.
¢ The analysis of the behaviour of fluids is based:
- on the fundamental laws of mechanics
- continuity of mass and energy
- force and momentum together with
- the familiar solid mechanics properties
٢
OBJECTIVES:¢ The course will introduce the principle of fluid
mechanics and establish its relevance in civil and environmental engineering.
¢ The laboratory component will allow “hand-on” learning through experiments relating to open channel and pipe flow
¢ Demonstrate how these are used for the design of simple hydraulic components.

٦
HOMEWORK
ó One of the best ways to learn something is through practice and repetition
ó Therefore, homework assignments are extremely important in this class!
ó Doing these will greatly improve your exam markó Home works were set on each chapter bases and
will be assigned by the instructor by the end of each chapter.

WHY ARE WE STUDYING FLUID MECHANICS ONA CIVIL , ENVIRONMENTAL AND INDUSTRIALENGINEERING COURSE???
¢ The provision of adequate water services such as the supply of potable water, drainage, sewerage are essential for the development of environmentally sound industrial society.
¢ Fluid mechanics is involved in nearly all areas of Civil, Environmental, and Industrial Engineering either directly or indirectly.
٨
EXAMPLES OF DIRECT INVOLVEMENT ARE THOSE WHEREWE ARE CONCERNED WITH MANIPULATING THE FLUID:
¢ Water distribution / sewerage (sanitation) networks
¢ Hydraulic design of water/sewage treatment works Sea and river (flood) defences;
¢ Dams;¢ Irrigation;¢ Pumps and Turbines;¢ Water retaining structures.
