The Taweez for success is on p. 32 of Practical Islamic Advice on www.dr-umar-azam.com Print out the Taweez, cut it out and put it in an amulet holder and wear it around your neck after taking a bath. Sometimes things don’t work out in life because they would have ended in disaster. So when we are disappointed, whatever we didn’t get, it is better that we didn’t get it [that’s what we mean when we say that Allah Most High is Beneficent, Merciful. So, whatever happens in the future, put your trust in Allah.

Assalamu Alaikum, Br.

I have read your rather peculiar e-mail and have a few points to make regarding its content – if I failed to make these points then you will have deceived others into thinking that I am misleading them in any way.

1. I think you are confusing RECOGNITION BY OTHER WEBSITES OF MY SITES [Website Awards] with the REWARD IN PARADISE IN THE LIFE HEREAFTER.

2. The source & acknowledgement of the DUA FOR A HOUSE IN PARADISE is given on the attachment i.e. KINZ AL-AMAAL, VOL. 1, P.205 and DR MUHAMMED IQBAL, Huddersfield . Whether this source is as strong as SAHIH HADITH is a different question altogether, but my own view is that if Verses glorify Allah Most High, then they must not be shunned. Even if, Nauzbillah, the Dua turns out to be false, then we will still get our HOUSE IN PARADISE for that was our intention. In fact, I have not found this special Dua myself. It was published in the book WORDS OF WISDOW by BARKAT ALI SAHIB http://www.daar-ul-ehsaan.org/ So we are not misleading anyone.

3. You don’t have a clue how dreams fit into the religion of Islam. Read my DREAMS IN ISLAM on www.dr-umar-azam.com There are Hadith pertaining to the significance of dreams in both SAHIH BUKHARI and SAHIH MUSLIM.

4. The comments you have made about my work do not fit in with those made by other Muslims in the Guestbooks of my Websites. Read those comments for yourself! Then you will find out how far adrift of real Muslims you are!

Salam-o-Laikam,

Your article on RULING ON STUDYING PHILOSOPHY is excellent and informative. However, you needed to make the all-important point that if ‘philosophy’ has come to mean ‘knowledge’, then the source of ultimate knowledge are Allah’s revealed Books i.e., the Torah, Zaboor, Injeel and Quran. The other three books have been altered by man but the Holy Quran remains and will remain unchanged. Therefore, it is the Holy Quran that contains the philosophical knowledge that is so crucial to man and jinn, and which has been directly revealed to His Messenger. What classical Islamic scholars have done is to use the concepts that are inherent in the Holy Quran!

Wassalam,

Dr Umar Azam

Ruling on studying philosophy

Question:What is the ruling on studying philosophy? Please note that studying it is compulsory for us in Algeria.

Answer:Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:It should be understood what philosophy is and what its principles are, before stating what the ruling on studying it is, because passing a ruling on something is usually based on the way it is viewed.

Al-Ghazaali said in al-Ihya’ (1/22): Philosophy is not one branch of knowledge, it is actually four:

1 – Geometry and mathematics: these are permissible as stated above, and there is no reason why they should not be studied unless there is the fear that one may overstep the mark and indulge in forbidden branches of knowledge, because most of those who study them overstep the mark and go on to innovations, thus the weak should be protected from them.

2 – Logic, which deals with the way in which evidence is to be used, the conditions of evidence being valid, the definition of what constitutes evidence and guidelines on the use of evidence. These come under the heading of ‘ilm al-kalaam.

Page 15: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

3 – Theology, which is discussion of the essence and attributes of Allaah, which also comes under the heading of ‘ilm al-kalaam. The philosophers did not have any other kind of knowledge that was unique to them, rather they had some views and ideas which were unique to them, some of which constitute kufr and some bid’ah (innovation).

4 – Natural sciences, some of which go against sharee’ah, Islam and truth, so it is ignorance, not knowledge that may be mentioned alongside the other branches of knowledge. Some of it involves the discussion of the attributes of different elements and how one can be changed to another. This is similar to the way in which doctors examine the human body in particular, from the point of view of what makes it sick and what makes it healthy. They look at all the elements to see how they change and move. But medicine has an edge over the physical body in that it is needed, but there is no need for the study of nature. End quote.

In al-Mawsoo’ah al-Muyassarah fi’l-Adyaan wa’l-Madhaahib al-Mu’aasirah (2/1118-1121) it says:

Philosophy is a Greek word composed of two words. Philo originally meant selflessness, but Pythagoras turned it to mean love; and sophia which means wisdom. The word philosopher is derived from philosophy and means the lover of wisdom. But the meaning changed and came to mean wisdom.

Then the philosopher came to be called a wise man (hakeem). In the past the word philosophy referred to study of the basic principles, viewing knowledge as something based on rationality, the goal of which was the search for truth. For its supporters, philosophy is, as Dr. Tawfeeq al-Taweel described it: Rational examination, free from any restrictions and authority imposed on it from outside, and with the ability to go all the way on the basis of logic, propagating his view regardless of the difference between these (philosophical) views and what is customarily known, religious beliefs

Page 16: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

and the dictates of tradition, without being confronted or resisted or punished by any authority. In Aristotle’s view, the philosopher is of a higher status than a prophet, because the prophet understands things by means of imagination whereas the philosopher understands things by means of reason and contemplation. In their view, imagination is of a lower status than contemplation. Al-Faraabi agreed with Aristotle in viewing the philosopher as being of higher status than a prophet.

In this sense philosophy is opposed to wisdom, which in Islamic terminology refers to the Sunnah as defined by the majority of muhadditheen and fuqaha’, and in the sense of judgement, knowledge and proficiency, alongside moral guidelines which control the whims and desires of the self and keep it from doing haraam things. The wise man is the one who has these characteristics, hence philosophy, as defined by the philosophers, is one of the most dangerous falsehoods and most vicious in fighting faith and religion on the basis of logic, which it is very easy to use to confuse people in the name of reason, interpretation and metaphor that distort the religious texts.

Imam al-Shaafa’i said: The people did not become ignorant and begin to differ until they abandoned Arabic terminology and adopted the terminology of Aristotle. Even though philosophy existed in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, India and Persia, it became most famous in Greece and became synonymous with that land, the reason being that the Greek philosophers were interested in transmitting it from the legacy of idolatrous peoples and the remnants of the divinely-revealed religions, benefiting from the scriptures of Ibraaheem and Moosa (peace be upon them) after the Greek victory over the Hebrews after the captivity in Babylon, and benefiting from the religion of Luqmaan the Wise. So there was a mixture of views that confirmed the divinity and Lordship of the Creator that was contaminated with idolatry. Therefore the Greek philosophy was in some ways a revival more than an innovation.

Page 17: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

Ibn Abi’l-‘Izz, the commentator on al-Tahhaawiyyah, summed up the schools of philosophical thought about the five basic principles of religion in their view, as follows:

That God does exist but He has no reality or essence, and He does not know the details of His creation, but He does know about its general terms, thus they deniedthat He creates the deeds of His slaves. They also did not believe in His Books, as in their view God does not speak or talk, and the Qur’aan is just something that shines from active reasons into purified human hearts. Exalted be Allaah far above what they ascribe to Him. There is no separate entity that ascends or descends, rather in their view it is all ideas in the mind that do not exist in reality. The philosophers are the one who most deny the Last Day and its events. In their view Paradise and Hell are no more than parables for the masses to understand, but they have no reality beyond people’s minds.

The Greek philosophers still have an impact on all western philosophies and ideologies, ancient and modern. Indeed, most of the Islamic kalaami groups were influenced by them. The terminology of Islamic philosophy did not emerge as a branch of knowledge that is taught in the curriculum of Islamic studies until it was introduced by Shaykh Mustafa ‘Abd al-Razzaaq – the Shaykh of al-Azhar – as a reaction to western attacks on Islam based on the idea that Islam has no philosophy. But the fact of the matter is that philosophy is an alien entity in the body of Islam. There is no philosophy in Islam and there are no philosophers among Muslims in this deviant sense. Rather in Islam there is certain knowledge and prominent scholars who examine matters. Among the most famous philosophers who were nominally Muslims were al-Kindi, al-Faraabi, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Ibn Rushd (Averroes). End quote.

Secondly:

The majority of fuqaha’ have stated that it is haraam to study philosophy. Among their comments on that are the following:

Page 18: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

1 – Ibn Nujaym (Hanafi) said in al-Ashbaah wa’l-Nazaa’im: Acquiring knowledge may be an individual obligation, which is as much as one needs for religious commitment to be sound; or it may be a communal obligation, which is in addition to the previous and is done for the benefit of others; or it may be recommended, which is studying fiqh and ‘ilm al-qalb (purification of the heart) in depth; or it may be haraam, which is learning philosophy, magic (sleight of hand), astrology, geomancy, natural science and witchcraft. End quote from al-Ashbaah wa’l-Nazaa’ir ma’a Sharhiha: Ghamaz ‘Ayoon al-Basaa’ir by al-Hamawi (4/125).

2 – al-Dardeer (Maaliki) said in al-Sharh al-Kabeer, discussing the kind of knowledge which is a communal obligation: Such as studying sharee’ah, which is not an individual obligation, and which includes fiqh, tafseer, hadeeth and ‘aqeedah, and things that help with that such as (Arabic) grammar and literature, tafseer, mathematics and usool al-fiqh – not philosophy, astrology or ‘ilm al-kalaam, according to the most sound opinion.

Al-Dasooqi said in his Haashiyah (2/174): His phrase “according to the most soundopinion” means that it is forbidden to read the books of al-Baaji, Ibn al-‘Arabi and ‘Iyaad, unlike the one who says that it is essential to learn it in order to understand ‘aqeedah and basic religious issues. But al-Ghazaali said that the one who has knowledge of ‘ilm al-kalaam knows nothing of religious beliefs except the beliefs that the common people share, but they are distinguished by their ability to argue and debate.

3 – Zakariya al-Ansaari (Shaafa’i) said in Asna al-Mataalib (4/182): As for learning philosophy, magic (sleight of hand), astrology, geomancy, natural science and witchcraft, it is haraam. End quote.

4 – al-Bahooti (Hanbali) said in Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’ (3/34): The opposite of shar’i knowledge is knowledge that is haraam or makrooh. Haraam knowledge is like ‘ilm

Page 19: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

al-kalaam in which they argue on the basis of pure reason or speak in a manner that contradicts sound, unambiguous reports. If they speak on the basis of reports only or on the basis of texts and rational thought that is in accordance with them, then this is the basis of religion and the way of ahl al-sunnah. This is what is meant by the words of Shaykh Taqiy al-Deen. In his commentary he explains that even better. [Haraam knowledge also includes] philosophy, magic (sleight of hand), astrology and geomancy, as well as alchemy and natural sciences. End quote.

It should be noted that an exception from this prohibition is made for those who study it as a speciality in order to explain its deviations and refute the falsehoods that they stir up.

Thirdly:

If studying philosophy is compulsory, then you must beware of believing in any of its falsehoods or admiring its people. You should strive hard to acquire shar’i knowledge, especially that which has to do with ‘aqeedah (belief), so that you will develop immunity and resistance to specious arguments.

We ask Allaah to help and guide you.

And Allaah knows best.

Wa Alaiykum Salaam Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh Wamaghfiratuh.

Thank you brother Abadalla bin Eifan for clarifying this important issue to Dr. Umar Azam who seems to be in need of such advices especially when Dr. Umar is running Islamic websites. Running Islamic websites is a big responsibility and any ignorance towards understanding the right and true "Aqeeda" is a serious case which Dr. Umar will shoulder on the day of Judgement. I gathered from Dr. Umar's response below that he believes in logical understanding of Islam and it will take a lot of effort to make Dr. Umar realise his mistakes in his beliefs and philosophies. Nowadays, you'll find Dr. Umar's way of thinking is spreading fast because of their disregard to learn the true teaching of our Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam). I pray to Allah for all of those who are taking Islam in Dr. Umar's style to be enlightened (including Dr. Umar himself). My advice to you Brother Abdalla is to continue communicating with Dr. Umar privately without sending copies to the rest. I ask Dr. Umar to take brother Abadalla bin Eifan's advice and brother Muhammad Bawazir's guidance to enable his Islamic websites carry the proper teachings of Prophet Muahmmad (Salla Allaahu Alaiyhi Wasallam). May Allaah guide us all to His path. Aameen.

Yours Brotherly,

Mehsen Alamoudi.

abdallah bin eifan <[email protected]> wrote:

Assalaam Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu,

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am disheartened at the ignorant allegations revealed by the so called Dr. Umar Azam (a self-styled Muslim Scholar) regarding the clear and informative comments by our brother Muhammad Baawazir. It seems that the so called Dr. Umar has failed to understand the reply of Mr. Muhammad Baawazir. The reply was simple and straight forward.

Page 21: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

I would simply refer you to the most important paragraph in Mr. Baawazir;s letter which reads :

QUOTE :

b) All acts of worships must be Tawqiyfiy, which means the teachings must be from the Qur-aan and Sunnah. But you have not published the du'aa quoted by the Prophet (Swalla Allaahu 'alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam), rather you preferred the du'aa invented by people and you considered them worth and better than those taught by our beloved Prophet (Swalla Allaahu 'alayhi wa aalihi wa sallam) hundreds of authentic du'aa from the Sunnah. There are so many du'aa from the Sunnah that we hardly even have time to recite them, so why leave them and take those invented by people? Here are the links of authentic du'aa for your information and

benefit: http://www.islamic-knowledge.com/Hisn_al_Muslim/Hisn_Al_Muslim.htm

UNQUOTE.

Unfortunately, you seem to be talking only about other people's comments regarding your work. Those unfortunate people might have been mislead by your fabricated stories and decorated "duas"and who are probably less knowledgeable about their religion through no fault of their own. You cannot expect to take everyone for a ride.

I have also noted the fact that you are very much interested in miracles : miracle flower, miracle strawberry, miracle fish, etc. and you also invite people to send you miracles. What nonsense. Remember that a true Muslim does no longer need miracles. The greatest miracle is already in our hands : THE HOLY QURA'AN. It has remained (and will remain) intact until the end of time. Nobody could find any fault with it thorughout the last 14 centuries and nobody will ever find any contradictions in it. On the contrary, as days pass by, people continue to discover the beauty, the truth, the

Page 22: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

benefits, etc. in it. Remember it was the unbelievers who demanded miracles from the prophets to prove their prophethood and NOT the believers.

May I give the so called Dr. Umar Azam my final advice (care : this is an advice and NOT a threat).

I have met with the local Muslim Scholars here in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia a few days back and discussed about your websites that include the funny dreams, the funny miracles, the inauthentic hadeeths and fabricated duas, etc. and the decision reached was as follows :

(1) We should continue to monitor your websites

(2) We should send you Islamic books that contain

authentic hadeeths and useful duas and call you

to the right path.

(3) If you still continue to post stupid articles about Islam

then a website to be named : BEWARE OF DR.UMAR

AZAM will be established.

When the Almighty Allah (Subhanahu wa Taala) sent the Messenger Moses (Musa) & prophet Aron (Haroon) (alayhum-el-salaam), to the Pharao, He told them to speak to him politely so that he may fear Allah and return to the right course.

How on Earth can the study of Islamic dreams ‘send the whole world into hell’? What are you on about? I have read the Prophet’s [Pbuh] Farewell Speech a number of times in the past and, no doubt, it is crucial. But how can you then link this Speech to research into Islamic dreams? Where in the Speech does the Prohet [Pbuh] forbid the study of Islamic dreams or, indeed, Islamic scholarship?

Wassalam,

Dr Umar Azam

Dr. Umar,

Wa Alaiykum Salaam Warahmatullaah.

I am very dissappointed with your insistance in sticking to your dreams (Hawaa).

If Islamic faith is to be based on your dreams (or "Hawaa") then you would have sent the whole world into hell. You need to know our Prophet Muhammad (Salla-Allaahu Alaiyhi Wa Sallam)'s Hajjatul-Widaa (The Farewell Pilgrimage) speech.

" O people! Listen to what I say. I do not know whether I will ever meet you at this place once again after this current year. It is unlawful for you to shed the blood of one another or take (unlawfully) the fortunes of one another. They are as unlawful, (Haram) as shedding blood on such a day as today and in such a month as this Haram month and in such a sanctified city as this sacred city (i.e. Makkah and the surrounding areas)."

"Behold! all practices of paganism and ignorance are now under my feet. The blood-revenge of the Days of Ignorance (pre-Islamic time) are remitted. The first claim on blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabi‘a bin Harith who was nursed in the tribe of Sa‘d and whom Hudhail killed. Usury is forbidden, and I make a beginning by remitting the amount of interest which ‘Abbas bin ‘Abdul Muttalib has to receive. Verily, it is remitted entirely."

Page 25: DR UMAR AZAM'S EMAILS - APRIL 2008

"O people! Fear Allâh concerning women. Verily you have taken them on the security of Allâh and have made their persons lawful unto you by Words of Allâh! It is incumbent upon them to honour their conjugal rights and, not to commit acts of impropriety which, if they do, you have authority to chastise them, yet not severely. If your wives refrain from impropriety and are faithful to you, clothe and feed them suitably."

"Verily, I have left amongst you the Book of Allâh and the Sunnah (Traditions) of His Messenger which if you hold fast, you shall never go astray."

"O people, I am not succeeded by a Prophet and you are not succeeded by any nation. So I recommend you to worship your Lord, to pray the five prayers, to fast Ramadan and to offer the Zakat (poor-due) of your provision willingly. I recommend you to do the pilgrimage to the Sacred House of your Lord and to obey those who are in charge of you then you will be awarded to enter the Paradise of your Lord."

"And if you were asked about me, what wanted you to say?"

They replied:

"We bear witness that you have conveyed the message and discharged your ministry."

He then raised his forefinger skywards and then moved it down towards people while saying:

"O Allâh, Bear witness."

He said that phrase thrice.

The one who repeated the Prophet’s statements loudly at ‘Arafat was Rabi‘a bin Omaiyah bin Khalaf.

As soon as the Prophet had accomplished delivering the speech, the following Qur’ânic verse was revealed to him:

"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion."

Upon hearing this verse ‘Umar cried. "What makes you cry?" He was asked. His answer was: "Nothing succeeds perfection but imperfection."

After reading the above do you still insist in distorting people in the true Islamic belief.

We all have good idea on your way of thinking and what you are up to....we are not that stupid !!!!. We are trying to tell you that you are wrong and should refrain from your false ideologies. Give yourself time to think and read more on Islam and DO NOT be ignorant to all the advices you are given.

I pray to Allaah to grant you Hidaaya.

Assalamu Alaikum,

I am beginning to feel that a few of you really are helplessly deluded and genuinely do not understand the nature of my work on religious dreams.

I am making the point in my book DREAMS IN ISLAM that, if a person is righteous, then he or she can benefit from religious dreams which contain messages and guidance from Allah Most High.

And my research papers such as DREAMS OF REWARD IN PARADISE , DREAMS OF KNOWLEDGE AND SCHOLARSHIP and TRUE DREAMS all give examples of actual dreams, which I have myself experienced, to emphasise the point of religious dreams being messages from God.

Do you not think that this in-depth research is valuable because it is original? Not much Islamic research on ‘dreams’ has been done in the past; it is a rare field of study.

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa barakatuhu Sister Aisha,

Welcome to Islam and may ALLAAH (May His Name be Glorified) make the deen easy for you. It was related that when one accepts Islaam, all past sins are forgiven and wiped off and the person becomes like a new born baby. May Allah lead and guide you and make you a beacon of light to your immediate family, your friends and colleagues.

I am sure other brothers and sisters in the group will respond to your request for a copy of the Holy Quran and the Hadith. I say this because I have been a beneficiary of same as you can see from my mail below.

The greatest challenge for you as a new Muslim - they are known as REVERTEES - is to continue to project the little you know about Islam, to continue to strive to know more, and to help millions of others to see the light as you have seen.

Once again, welcome to the ALLAH's greatest community of brotherhood and sisterhood!

Dreams of Shazad

Wa laikum salam,

Yeah, Hi Rehmana – I’m feeling so-so; life goes on. I’m not feeling 100%.

The car in your dream represents life – you met Shazad briefly in life. The haircut suggests that actually it was not his fault that you two did not marry – rather it was your own father who disapproved.

Hair CutAs Samson and the Merovingians will attest, dreams of cutting hair can be another symbol of a loss of power. For men, it can even symbolize feelings of castration. Whereas dreams of hair falling out points to an insidious energy drain, dreams of having one's hair cut symbolize a much more aggressive type of power loss. In waking life, prisoners heads are often shaved to take away some of their identity.

Dreams of getting your hair cut, however, do not always mean a loss of power. Look at the dream and see who is cutting your hair. Is it a barber or hair dresser? If so, this may actually point to something which needs to be discarded, or a feeling of needing to rid yourself of something. However, if the haircut is performed by someone other than a professional, look at who that person is. You may feel as if that person is taking away something important from you.

http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art10574.asp

Even though Shazad might still have feelings for you, it is better for your emotional health if you move on in life; after all, if you can’t have someone, why worry? That is not a favourable trait for the one ho eventually marries you. After all, who wants an emotionally-second-hand wife? I’m giving you this blunt advice to help you. Keep in touch!
