Introduction

• Medicines derived/extracted from herbs.

• Available in the form of tablets, capsules, powders, extracts etc.

Page 3: Dr. q. mudasir

• Are “natural” and are usually safe.

• The study of such herbs used for medicinal purposes is known as “ Herbalism/Herbalogy”

Page 4: Dr. q. mudasir

• Long back herbal medicines have been used by humans.

• Archaeological evidence: indicates that herbal medicines have been used some 60,000 years ago.

Page 5: Dr. q. mudasir

In wild…….(how animals feel better?)

• As a common rule in jungles, sick animals change their food preferences to nibble at bitter herbs that they normally reject.

• This is because of their anti microbial, anti viral, and antifungal actions.

Page 6: Dr. q. mudasir

An example…..

• Gorillas in jungles take 90 % of their diet from the fruits of “Aframomum melegueta ”

Page 7: Dr. q. mudasir

• Its a relative of ginger plant having potent antimicrobial action and also protects them from cardiomyopathy.

Page 8: Dr. q. mudasir

• In 2007 (Dybas and Ruskin) studied the cause of death in captive Gorillas in Africa.

• They observed the cause of death being cardiomyopathy.

• Reasons being absence of “Aframomum melegueta ”

Mastilep as a prophylactic ointment

• As a prophylactic measure to control mastitis we have been using mastilep ointment in Kashmir Valley.

• MOST OF FARMERS ARE POOR ( 1 to 2 cows only)

Page 18: Dr. q. mudasir

What we do ?

• Often we prescribe mastilep to them when their animals are in a state of high yield (after parturition)

• THRICE IN A WEEK (MONDAY , WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY) ……. but b.i.d

• Farmers who have been using this ointment during peak yields do not complain much regarding mastitis.

Page 19: Dr. q. mudasir

In FARMS

• We found dramatic results in 03 dairy farms in Srinagar area where incidence of mastitis was minimal using this ointment.

CVH- SRINAGAR

Page 20: Dr. q. mudasir
Page 21: Dr. q. mudasir

• We used mastilep ointment thrice in a week (ON A/D) in these 03 farms during peak yields ………. but b.i.d.

• In these farms incidence of mastitis was high previously but came down dramatically to a low level using this ointment.
