COURSES TAUGHT
Dr. Murphy enjoys teaching General Chemistry (CHEM
105/106), Critical Thinking courses (PACT 103 and CHEM
475), Advanced Inorganic, Physical Chemistry, Research
in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and travel seminars.
She enjoys helping and advising students at all levels.
Dr. Murphy receives the
2011 Julia Lightfoot
Sellers Faculty Award at
graduation. She also
won the award in 1999.
The award is voted on
by members of the
junior and senior class .
Dr. Maureen Kendrick Mur-
phy is a 1978 Chemistry
graduate of Huntingdon.
Through an accelerated
program, she finished her
B.A. degree in three years,
earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry
and Biochemistry from the University of South Carolina,
and completed postdoctoral study and research at the
University of Chicago. She was one of the first female
chemistry professors at the University of Alabama, and
also taught high school in Russellville, AL. She is the
recipient of a Lilly Foundation Teacher-Scholar Award,
GTE Fellowship, Tandy Technology Scholars Award, and
the Outstanding Chemistry Teacher Award for the
Southeastern U.S. from the American Chemical Society.
She has received each teaching award at Huntingdon,
some twice. She has more than 40 publications to her
name, many with undergraduates. She enjoys teach-
ing, traveling with students, and helping students to be
successful. Come by Bellingrath 105 and meet her!
As part of the Huntingdon Pre-
Health Professions Committee
(HPPC), Dr. Murphy has been
advising pre-pharmacy stu-
dents and pre-health profes-
sions students for the past 16
years. From 1997-2012, 27
(100%) of our majors have
been accepted to Pharm.D.
programs at pharmacy schools
across the nation.
Kellie Hilton (Chemistry, Class of
2012 ) receives her white coat in
June 2012 at South Univ. SOP.
Senior chemistry and biochemistry majors with a 3.50
GPA or higher are eligible to conduct an “Honors in
Chemistry” project with faculty and graduate with de-
partmental honors. Dr. Murphy has conducted honors
projects with students each semester.
Seven of our majors were accepted to pharmacy
schools during the 2011-2012 academic year!
