“We are the right organization...at the right time in history.”
John A. Mattiacci, DPM, President of Guild 45 and OPEIU VicePresident gave a rousing speech on the importance of OPEIUand America’s labor movement to the future of podiatrists
and all medical professionals.
“Our Guild was the first national movement of professionals toband together, through our professional associations andbecome a local of national jurisdiction of OPEIU. We are doctorsof podiatric medicine. We can, in each state, perform all medicaland surgical procedures to the foot and ankle. We graduate fromcollege, and a four-year medical school, take national tests toqualify for our medical license and serve a three-year residency,”explained Mattiacci. “We are all independent contractors...incompetition with each other and, therefore, are not a typicalsituation for unionization. So, how did I end up here before youtoday,” he asked.
“OPEIU couldn’t bargain for us, it could not give us a safe harborto collect or share fee or cost information. AND, because wewere in patient care, we could not strike.
“What could a union possibly do for us? Sixteen years ago I,along with Dr. Michael Wodka from New York, Dr. Ed Smithfrom Vermont and Dr. Robert Herpen from Pennsylvania mettogether to explore a non-traditional approach to allow us totake advantage of what the labor movement offers...and whatthe labor movement offered was strength,” said an animatedMattiacci to much applause.
“WHAT THE LABOR MOVEMENTOFFERED WAS...STRENGTH!”“I met with representatives of several unions,” he went on.“After which I met with Michael Goodwin, and then-Secretary-Treasurer, Gilles Beauregard. When we met, I did not have anidea of how to achieve my goal, but I did have a goal. I wantedto unite the profession of medicine with organized labor.Theresult of those meetings is the non-traditional Guild system thatyou see in OPEIU today. We made the front page of The NewYork Times. The first national union of healthcare professionalsin history!”
Mattiacci had delegates on their feet as he left them with thislast thought, “This is our future! We can show [other doctorgroups] what our union, OPEIU, has done for a smallspecialty…moving legislatures and standing up to giantinsurance interests. The strength of labor is the ONLY interest inthe nation that will allow us to do that!”
The International President of the OPEIU, Michael Goodwin, commented on the major strides which Dr. Mattiacci has takenand continues to take for podiatry.
“The delegates to the 2013 Convention in San Diego, Californiawere thrilled to hear the presentation by OPEIU Guild 45President Dr. John Mattiacci, who delivered a comprehensivereport on the challenges faced by doctors of podiatric medicineand other practitioners in the healthcare industry,” explainedGoodwin. “OPEIU is fortunate to have Dr. Mattiacci as the leaderof Guild 45 and one of the most articulate spokespersons in theUnited States on healthcare issues.”

AN INTERNATIONAL HONOR FOR DR. TRACEY VLAHOVIC, DPM ‘00
Dr. Tracey Vlahovic has recently become a Fellow of the Facultyof Podiatric Medicine in the Royal College of Physicians andSurgeons, Glasgow, UK. She is the first doctor in the UnitedStates to receive this honor.
Rob Farber is the Student CouncilPresident and one of the nicestsouthern guys Strides has had the
pleasure of interviewing.
He sat down with us for a Q&A sessionabout his goals for the future and workwith Student Council.
Strides: Where did you go for yourUndergraduate degree?
Farber: I went to Louisiana StateUniversity
Strides: So what brought you toPhiladelphia, to Temple?
Farber: I really like the clinic here. Istarted getting into podiatry about a yearbefore I came here. I volunteered at acouple of podiatrists’ offices in BatonRouge and also in San Antonio. I reallyliked the quality of life they have withtheir professionalism in medicine. So Idid some research with Temple, I likedthe name brand that it has and I also likethe clinic. I feel like we can get greatclinical skills here with a great educationthat can prepare us for the profession.
Strides: Do you have a focus in podiatrythat you are most interested in?
Farber: I really like trauma and woundcare as of now. I’m certain that when Iget to clinic that will change, but I like alot of high pressure situations. But I amopen to all aspects.
Strides: What are you involved in oncampus?
Farber: On campus, I helped set up theevents for our interclass Olympics lastyear. I’m involved in multiple clubs, oursurgery club, ACFAS, our diabetes club, practice management, I’ve also gone toa couple meetings and represented thepodiatry school at the health sciencecenter to set up more communicationwith the other professional schools: the
med school the pharmacy school andallied health. I’m also in our anatomicalsociety, SHDHAS. In the upcomingsemester I will be tutoring some of thestudents in lower extremity anatomy.
Strides: What prompted you to run forStudent Council?
Farber: I really wanted a challenge. I feltthat I had organizational skills andliaison skills to really connect tostudents, to the administration and alsoto the rest of the profession, and thestudents in the other schools. One of mymain points is to try to connect a littlebetter with New York. Have some moresocial functions with them, that way wecan cross talk and cross teach onacademics, clinical skills and alsoresearch.
Strides: What are you trying to do withNew York?
Farber: It’s a little mixer I’ve beenplanning between the schools. Trying toget it done this semester but everybodyhas a hectic schedule so hopefully wecan get something off the ground beforethis upcoming semester…Its only two
hours from here so I felt like, geteverybody to start meeting andconnecting, and networking before weget into residency that way instead ofknowing 90 people we know 200. Youhave someone you can count on beforeyou even get into residency if you don’tget into one that has a classmate in it.
Strides: What sets you apart from yourpeers?
Farber: I would say my work ethic. I’musually the first one here in the morningand the last one to leave. I’m reallypassionate about [podiatry] like my otherclassmates.
Strides: What are you looking forward towhen you graduate and are ready to enterthe field?
Farber: I’m looking to make an impactdefinitely on the patients’ lives and alsoin the profession. Since I am involved inthe student council, hopefully maybegetting involved in the political aspect ofthe field also to maybe enhance our fieldand improve it for the future.
Strides: Do you have a message to theclass?
Farber: Get involved and be moreknowledgeable about your career. Havea passion for what you do.
Strides: Passion seems to be veryimportant to you.
Farber: Passion is important to me. Ithink it really does make everythingespecially with patient contact. If youhave a lot of passion, they’ll see they’llbe more relaxed and make you a betterdoctor.
Strides: Do you think you will go back toLouisiana?
Farber: I am going to go wherever mycareer takes me. Wherever the greatestchallenge for me is and also where I willlearn the most.

PODIATRY STUDENTS HELP ARMY CADETS ‘STEPINTO’ FOOT RESEARCH BY: ARMY MEDICINE MERCURY MAGAZINE
with the University of Barcelona’s Dean, Dr. VirginiaNovel i Marti, who began traveling from Spain to theUnited States in the early 1990’s Dr. Marti received anhonorary degree from PCPM in 1998 to recognize heraccomplishments in Spain as a dynamic educator andleader.
“[Dean Marti] visited our school to learn about ourcurriculum to start the podology profession in Spain ona University level,” explained Dr. Mahan. “She raised thestandard across the European Union.”
Soon after, TUSPM faculty began traveling to theUniversity of Barcelona to assist with surgery andbiomechanics. TUSPM faculty have continued thistradition for over 20 years.
During Dr. Mahan’s July 2013 trip to the University, heparticipated in a Masters course in surgery at theirmedical school, presented lectures and participated incadaver labs.
Dr. Mahan also attended the first graduation ceremonyfor the podiatric medical students under the newcurriculum authorized by the European Union. While atthe ceremony, Dr. Mahan was seated on the dais alongwith Dean Marti and other distinguished members ofthe University of Barcelona, including the current andformer rectors of the University as well as the director ofthe Catalan government.
“The graduation ceremony hall had tapestries that areolder than the United States in a beautiful room”, saidDr. Mahan. “We all wore a stole instead of a cap andgown, and each of us on the dais were invited to makea brief remark.”
To honor his dedication and leadership in assisting inthe creation of the University’s podiatric medicalprogram, Dr. Mahan was awarded the Leonard EscotchAward two years ago and this year received an awardfrom the students in honor of his 25 years of dedicationto the University of Barcelona students.
“Leonard Escotch was the founder of podiatry in Spain,”Dr. Mahan explained, “This was very big honor becausethey’ve been very appreciative that we were willing toshare with them just on the basis of developing theprofession around the world.”
In the future, Dr. Mahan hopes to strengthen therelationship that has been nurtured between theUniversity and TUSPM.
“I would like to develop a permanent affiliation with theUniversity,” Dr. Mahan explained, “They have aninterest in biomechanics and our students could gothere to learn and their students could come here tolearn. Global engagement and learning is the future.”
Few things are as important to an Army cadet as a good pair of boots. Buthow to ensure the best fit? That was the question posed by an Army podiatristafter he noticed a relationship between poor-fitting boots and the incidence ofinjuries.
To help the Army find an answer, a group of students and faculty membersfrom Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) recentlytraveled to West Point to aid in an Army research study that is profiling archheight and stiffness in military trainees and their correlation to overuse injury.
The study involves more than 1,000 cadet volunteers who will have their feetmeasured at regular intervals throughout their time at West Point to check forchanges in foot structure as a result of training. It is intended to help find abetter method for measuring incoming cadets for footwear since poor-fittingboots are linked to pain and injuries.
The TUSPM volunteers were part of a team that measured the feet of allincoming cadets in only two days. Normally it can take years to gather thatmany subjects for a study.
“We weren’t there just ‘helping out’ on this project,” says James Furmato,DPM, PhD, Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine at TUSPM and one of thefaculty members who made the trip. “Our students and faculty made theobjective measurements possible on this scale through innovation andanticipation of technical concerns.
The study will be repeated with incoming cadets for the next few years.Besides learning how feet are affected by a “scholar-athlete” life style, ourschool provides related measurements, like shoe testing, which can expandour research opportunities.”
Dr. Furmato adds, “As a result of this pilot study, a number of collaborativeresearch grants have been suggested involving scientists within the Army, atthe Hospital For Special Surgery and the New York College of PodiatricMedicine (both in New York City) and Harvard University. Shoe testing atTUSPM will provide objective data about footwear function which can bematched with cadet preference and performance.. As the protocols formeasurement, fitting and shoe recommendation become established, there ispotential for commercializing the process and extending the service to otheracademies and basic training centers.”

“We remarked at how over the yearsthere has not been much collaborationbetween our institutions, even though weare geographically close. The idea for aweb conference was one way to shareinteresting cases and have an exchangeof ideas between the two institutions,”Dr. Mahan explained. “We are bothcommitted to sharing our resourcescollaboratively to improve the learningexperience for our students.”
TUSPM is expected to install a newsophisticated system in order for bothschools to better see one another andcommunicate their ideas.
Dr. Gabriela Mendez, Assistant Professorin the Department of Surgery at TUSPMand Dr. Johanna Godoy-Jones, Instructorof Surgical Sciences at NYCPM, werebrought into the project as liaisonsbetween the two schools.
Dr. Mendez has been leading thecollaboration with students and residentswho have already presented cases and
topics of discussion to NYCPM. The goalis to have students, residents andprofessors compare notes and treatmentoptions to expand their knowledge bylearning from each other.
Residents Christine Nolan and MattWagner were also involved in thecollaboration, as they both presentedcases during the initial video conferencewith NYCPM.
“I am excited to present and participatein the conference again. I like theexchange of ideas. I think it contributesto giving the best quality care to ourpatients,” said TUSPM Resident ChristineNolan, DPM
“The opportunity in working with NYCPMand other residents has been a valuablecollaboration and opportunity to expandcommunication lines within theprofession,” explained TUSPM ResidentMatt Wagner, DPM. “It was also a greatopportunity to get insight from otherPodiatric surgeons.”
The reactions from NYCPM have beennothing but positive. Dr. Mendezreported: “NYCPM was very impressedwith us, and we are really excited andlooking forward to doing more of thesealong with workshops and conference tobenefit everyone on both TUSPM and NYstaff”
In December 2012, Dr. Michael Trepaland Dr. Kevin T. Jules, Chair of SurgicalSciences at NYCPM, guest lectured at“Current Concepts in Foot & AnkleSurgery” conference presented by theTUSPM Department of Surgery. Dr.Gabriela Mendez is expected to lecture inNew York in the upcoming months.
The future is looking bright for strongrelationship between TUSPM and NYCPMand we hope to generate morecollaborative efforts with more schools ofpodiatric medicine soon.

Dr. Kwaadu is aPhiladelphia native and graduate ofTUSPM’s class of 2009. He comes to usfrom Aria Health Systems, where hecompleted his residency and fellowship.Strides asked the doctors a few questionsto get to know them a little better.
Strides: What made you choose TUSPM?
Kwaadu: Local Bias. TUSPM was reputedas the best podiatric school in the country
Moore:My residency was a high volumesurgical and trauma program and Iwanted to use all I had been trained to do.I also always have loved teaching andwanted to continue to teach and help guideand mold the future of the profession.
Strides: What have you liked most aboutTUSPM and Philadelphia?
Kwaadu: Philadelphia is easily accessibleand a great city for young professionals, great food, entertainment, etc.
Moore: I love the students, they keep meyoung and driven to be my best and neverbecome obsolete. Philadelphia has greatfood and culture, there is alwayssomething to do and a new place to eat.
Strides: What do you think you bring to theposition to make it more specific to you andyour personality?
Kwaadu: I bring a different perspective. Itrained at an institution where we saw anenormous volume and unique pathologysuch as a man with external fixator whobroke every bone from the knee downexcept for two.
Moore: I am an “outsider” not Templetrained so I bring a new perspective andfresh arsenal of ideas and trainingmodalities.
