Ciao Italia, Westville Tel 031 267 1762 CIAO ITALIA in Westville remains one of my favourite ‘Italian’ restaurants. It is our form of Italian fusion, taking Italian traditional dishes and doing them in ways that keep people coming back for more. Since the days of Marco the non-racial team of former employees, now owners, have continued to make a mark not only on residents of Westville, but on the city at large. I usually stick to the chicken dishes, but you will not go wrong with their prawns, peppercorn fillet and the range of pastas and other dishes. Certainly a great place, with a great atmosphere. The Shilla, Gateway, Umhlanga Tel 031 566 7023 WE DISCOVERED The Shilla, a new authentic Korean restaurant whilst leaving the movies, and I must say it was a real find. The best test is whether or not foreigners from home countries visit restaurants claiming to be from their country, and in this case be assured that this is authentic Korea. Serving the many Korean and Japanese who visit our city, Korean food is quite different from Chinese and they pride themselves on fresh, wholesome and healthy fare. You sit at a table with your gas braais so that you can cook your own food – some dishes allow you to cook the meat and then wrap it in lettuce leaves with a sauce. Their pork dishes and many forms of beef, stews and lovely noodles will give you a very different and enjoyable night out. Certainly a place I will return to. But this has not deterred revelers from descending on the area in droves. On lazy Sunday afternoons numerous cars line up in the parking lot where friends meet to throw a few steaks on the coals. This playground for young people is testament to the fact that all you need is a few friends and good food to enjoy a good time. watch this THE PLAYHOUSE Company is hosting the annual South African Women’s Arts Festival (SAWAF), a compulsory entry in any performance art buff’s diary. The culturally diverse and rich festival runs until 12 August and includes Dzonga music, Open Mic poetry sessions and the now infamous Battle of the DJ’s contest. Gugu Blose Cubana ... Cubana.
