youR suppoRtWhen you support the Denver public Schools Foundation, your generosity is magnified—exponentially.
the Denver Public Schools foundation leverages support from the entire community to make a
lasting difference for the 81,000 students in Denver Public Schools (DPS). our mission and purpose
is to ensure that all DPS students receive a quality education and graduate with the knowledge,
skills and confidence to achieve success. thanks to supporters like you, a single gift is leveraged by
many others, and the impact is tremendous and far-reaching.
thank you for sharing our deep commitment to improving Denver’s schools and strengthening our
community. We’re pleased to share the story of your exponential impact on the students of Denver
in our 2010-11 Report to the Community.
Dear friend,
your support for the Denver Public Schools foundation clearly conveys your belief that the cornerstone of a
vibrant community is an outstanding public school system. With your help, the DPS foundation continues to
relentlessly pursue our ultimate vision: that every student graduates from DPS prepared for college, career and life.
Last year was marked by great progress for our schools and students. In the sixth year of ambitious efforts
under DPS’ strategic Denver Plan:
• nearly 500 more seniors graduated in 2011 than in 2009. more and more students are crossing the
commencement stage, diploma in hand, ready for higher education and successful careers.
• the number of students taking Advanced Placement courses and those concurrently enrolled in college
courses continues to rise. our students are being challenged with rigorous coursework—and getting a head
start on higher education.
• for the third consecutive year, DPS students have posted growth scores at or above the state median in all
subjects. DPS’ aggressive improvement strategies are translating into higher academic growth for individual
students. DPS is now surpassing all high-poverty school districts in the state in this measure.
• Denver Public Schools has received competitive federal and private grants totaling more than $100 million
in the last three years to support improvement initiatives — a reflection of the confidence that local and
national funders have in the strategy and pace of Denver’s approach to education.
among these signs of progress, a clear message has emerged: Denver public Schools is on the right track. And yet it’s impossible to ignore the difficult truths. nearly 75 percent of DPS students live in poverty and
need additional support and resources in order to flourish. While students from all parts of the city are seeing
academic growth, DPS still has stark achievement gaps between its more affluent and less affluent students.
these gaps, unless closed, will have a profound and long-term impact on our city. Denver’s students need our
help now more than ever.
Thanks to generous donors like you, the Denver Public Schools Foundation drove nearly $10 million into our
schools last year. your investment helped offset mounting budget cuts and effected real gains in classrooms
district-wide, including:
• Driving student success and closing achievement gaps.
• extending the school day with valuable hours of learning and enrichment.
• Supporting healthy students and exceptional learning environments.
• Providing adequate resources for teachers and classrooms.
• fostering outstanding leadership in our schools.
your support is helping our school system move in the right direction. in the pages that follow, we are pleased
to share stories of how your gift made a tangible, lasting difference for our students and to share with you
how, together, we can make an even greater—an exponentially greater—impact.
the challenges are large and the stakes are high. But with your continued support, we can—and will—ensure
the success of every student in Denver Public Schools. thank you.
Sincerely,
Kristin heath Colon

their peers, and fill them with confidence about their own ability to learn.

Defying the stAtus quo it’s an unacceptable truth: only 56% of DpS students graduated
from high school on time in 2011. We must work together to affect
change for the children of Denver.
your contribution to the DPS foundation is a powerful catalyst to change the odds for DPS
students. thanks to supporters like you, DPS is moving in the right direction. Graduation rates
and student proficiency are on the rise. But we won’t be satisfied until every student crosses the
commencement stage with a diploma in their hand, ready for college, career and life.
Jose Juan Cruz became the first person in his family to go to college after graduating
as Valedictorian of Bruce Randolph School in may, 2011. Jose Juan attributes his
success to inspirational teachers, a supportive school environment and programs
made possible through your support of the Denver Public Schools foundation.
“Students are the future,” says Jose Juan. “in our graduating class we may have a
future president; we may have a secretary of state, a teacher, a principal. Supporting
us will help America be the best that it can be.”
Jose Juan is pursuing a degree in education and plans to return to Bruce Randolph as a teacher.
he offers this advice to his peers in DPS: “try your best. have fun. Defy the odds.”

the DPS foundation’s A to Z fund puts resources directly into the hands of DPS teachers so they
can provide their students with outstanding learning and development opportunities that fall outside
classroom budgets. the A to Z fund has granted more than $700,000 since 2006, providing new
technology, funding for field trips, new musical instruments, books and much more.
the DPS foundation also supports DPS’ commitment to providing teachers with tools and support to
continually refine the art and science of teaching. through an ongoing collaboration with the Denver
Classroom teachers Association and funding from the Bill & melinda Gates foundation, DPS has
developed and is piloting Leading effective Academic Practice (LeAP). this comprehensive system of
support, feedback, evaluation and professional development has established Denver as an innovative
leader in promoting and supporting teacher effectiveness.

these investments support implementation of bold and innovative measures to improve the quality
of education for all students in DPS. the DPS foundation exists in recognition of the fact that public
funds alone cannot adequately support the ambitious efforts to advance student achievement in
Denver Public Schools. together with generous supporters like you, we can continue to fully leverage
gifts from local and national funders to sustain and accelerate the progress of our school system.
collective investment Denver public Schools has been awarded more than $100 million
in competitive federal and foundation grants in the last three
years alone.
in August 2010, Denver Public Schools was awarded a $25 million investing in innovation
(i3) grant by the u.S. Department of education. the Denver Public Schools foundation
led the effort to identify over $5 million in private matching funds to secure this grant—
the largest in Dps history.
As a result, middle school students who struggle with reading are now learning through an innovative,
participatory method called Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). the approach combines teacher
instruction with student-led small group work to increase comprehension through cooperative
learning. Grade level reading proficiency is critical to a student’s success over time, and is directly
tied to graduation rates. thanks to the community of public and private support, these cutting edge,
proven strategies are not only improving literacy in DPS, but are helping students comprehend
difficult text and regain their confidence in the classroom.
