Foreword
This leaflet aims to outline the main features of the DP BASIC, DP ADVANCED and DP SEA
TIME REDUCTION courses. All the courses contain key knowledge necessary to facilitate the
smoothest possible transition of deck / engine / electrotechnical personnel from merchant
ships to offshore ships equipped with Dynamic Positioning systems.
The Romanian Nautical College – DP & Offshore Centre is accredited by the Nautical Institute.
Also, the Romanian Nautical College has been an active member of IMCA-International
Maritime Contractors Association since 2013. The Quality System’s compliance to the ISO
9001:2008 Standard is approved by Lloyd’s Register QA.
Starting the 1st of January 2017, the DP & Offshore Centre is operating in the city of
Constanta, Romania, str. Lebedei Nr. 1 (in Marina Tomis).

COURSE OBJECTIVE: DP STR course is designed to give the DPO trainees the
opportunity to reduce 30 days from the required 60-day sea
service time as per 2015 NI standard, by attending 5 days of
intensive simulator training. The course enhances the trainee’s
practical experience by running intensive simulator scenarios
with a high exposure to environmental and technical worst
conditions.
As per NI standard: “each student is to obtain the maximum
amount of hands-on experience of operating the DP system, to
ensure the validity of awarding 6 days DP sea time for each day
spent in the simulator”.
DELIVERY METHOD: The training will be predominantly practical/operational in
nature.
COURSE AIMS: The STR course offers the DP trainee the opportunity to spend
extended and intensive periods of time on DP station keeping and
should challenge the trainee to enhance, consolidate and
demonstrate their:
• knowledge of the DP system and additional equipment and
instruments,
• situational awareness,
• communication and teamwork skills,
• ability to analyze trends and pre-empt problems before they
arise,
• capacity to evaluate and respond to alarms, faults and
emergencies with calm, reason and confidence, and
• ability to complete administrative and safety-related procedures
such as completing checklists, filling the logs and performing
thorough watch handovers and risk assessment.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
• Setting up and operating the DP system under various control
modes (manual, mixed and fully automatic);
• Operating various propulsion and position reference systems, as
well as sensors and peripheral equipment;
• Performing DP operations;
• Handling with alarms, warnings, emergencies and associated
communications;
• Applying DP operational planning,
• Identifying worst case failure and emergency procedures.
• Performing DP watch keeping in accordance to DP Operations
Manual.
Trainees’ evaluation and assessment:
• An initial test is organized in the first day to evaluate the level of
knowledge at the beginning of the course.

during the practical scenarios.
• Course certificate is awarded if the final score is higher than 70%
Course structure and content: The scenarios will be run on a Navis DP system Class 2, in a
Transas NTPRO-5000 full mission simulator environment connected to an advanced
simulator control (NI Class A). A rotation plan will permit the participants to act in different
roles during the scenarios.
Theory/Practice Ratio: Theory covers 15% and simulation covers 85% of course’s total
allocated time. Each day curricula contains 1 hr theory and 7 hrs practical scenarios.
Simulation support: Class A navigation bridge (Transas) with DP 2 consoles (Navis)
