By now most of you would have received communications from Jess regarding our draft racing program for the 2011/2012 Summer season and I hope that you’ve taken the time to return your thoughts via the questionnaire. We will issue our final program once we assess the cumulative feedback as this is, to a certain extent, a democratic process and the suggestions of every member are taken into account. If you haven’t taken a look at the proposed program please look for it on the website and return your comments to Jess who can also send out questionnaire forms for anyone who may have missed the original email. I attended the recent YSA AGM with Craig Evans this week and can report that the club and association delegates who attended were less than impressed with the scheduled YA/YSA fee increases tabled on the evening. A large component of this increase was due to increased YA Insurance levies and a motion was unanimously passed on the evening that YSA express dissatisfaction with this mandatory increase and investigate the alternative that insurance be offered as an option, not a necessity, to YA members. A motion was passed to accept the fee increase as the alternative would have resulted in the disaffiliation of the CYCSA with Yachting Australia. I am unsure as yet what, if any, impact this required increase will have on CYCSA membership fees but will keep you apprised of these processes as they continue to play out. Winter racing has begun, well, sort of. It’s never easy to make the decision to postpone a race but in the case of Race 1 of the Winter Series last Sunday, our choice to do so proved to be correct. The predicted storm arrived with a vengeance and the conditions were certainly dire enough to break boats and people. Those who happened to be near the coast or at the club that day would have witnessed the gales arrive in from the north and build in strength as the breeze clocked around to the south west during the afternoon, it was anything but an ideal day to be out racing. Hopefully we can look forward to better conditions in the races yet to come.

OFFSHORE RACE 7—MACDONNELL SOUND Following on from the very pleasant reaching of

the Island Cup - the fleet faced a very different

challenge in the last offshore race of the season!

Forecast - N/W 15/20 knots with a S/W change

during the afternoon. A reasonable combined fleet

of 13 started at 1300hrs.Most yachts hoisted

spinnakers shortly after the start and enjoyed a

brisk shy run to Glenelg Breakwater with the

breeze as predicted 15/20 knots - 300°. Secret

Mens Business 3.5 rounded the Glenelg mark at

1400 just as the change came in. Wind swinging

from 300° to 240° and increasing to 25 knots with

stronger gusts.

Course to Macdonnell Sound mark approx 240°.

They tacked onto port shortly after rounding

Glenelg for the 31 mile bash across the gulf - boat

speed 8/9 knots compass heading 290° - nasty

sharp seas soon built up with incoming wind

against a large outgoing tide. The bulk of the fleet

arrived at Glenelg mark around 1430 with a great

premium placed on the crew work to hoist

headsails and douse spinnakers in adverse

conditions –No.3 or 4 headsail and a reefed main

seemed to be the go for most yachts.

About .5mile west of the breakwater 3 Cool Cats

tack clip on the No.3 let go and together with an

unhelpful gust of about 30 knots caused the

headsail to come out of the foil and flog - to the

compound the problem the jib sheet snapped. The

headsail was then free to fly from the hounds at

right angles to the boat. Heading rapidly towards

shallow water the skipper (Phil) decided to start

the motor – only problem a spin brace had not

been pulled into the boat and immediately got

wound around the propeller stalling the motor.

Phil went up the mast and fired the headsail which flew

into the water – Carpe Diem who had withdrawn (due to

having only 4 crew on board) and was motoring offered

to pick up the headsail – at their first attempt a large

wave appeared to wash them over the sail resulting in the

remaining bit of the jib sheet winding around their prop

and the sail around the keel and rudder. A crew member

had to go overboard to free the mess from Carpe Diem

before they could head for home – whilst all this drama

was unfolding other yachts were on the radio pulling out.

Synergy, Kaesler, Sea Hawk, Vicky J IV and Ground Zero

plus 3 Cool Cats and Carpe Diem were now all heading for

home and out of the race.

The remaining yachts just hung in there – at the 1st

radio

‘sked’ SMB 3.5 was on the horizon with Shining Sea in 2nd

place – Asylum and Enchantress were a few miles behind

and to leeward. SMB 3.5 tacked back onto starboard only

4 miles south of Orontes on the lay line for McDonnell

Sound light. Rounded about 1900 during one final rain

squall and 35 knots. Shining Sea round about 2030 with

the wind steady at 240° and 20/25 knots with the

occasional 30 knot gust –during the last leg SMB 3.5 -

Asylum both had wipe-outs broaching wildly however

some of the pain and misery from the hard beat across

the gulf was laid to rest as yachts reached 15-20 knots

under spinnaker

SMB 3.5 took 8hrs 43, Shining Sea 10hrs 55, Enchantress

11hrs 26, Asylum 11hrs 34, Sunburst 112hrs 08 and

Renegade last 12hrs 33.

To top the race off all yachts experienced gusts and

showers in the last few miles keeping the crew on tender

hooks till they crossed the finish line. SMB 3.5 had a 38

knot rain squall just as they entered the CYCSA

breakwater preparing to drop the main. Only 6 finished

out of 13 starters.

SHORT-HANDED SHORT COURSE

PORT RIVER MARINE AND COMBINED WINTER SERIES RACE 1

The Racing Executive made the decision to postpone Race 1 of the Port River Marine Winter Series (and Combined

Winter Series) which was scheduled to be raced on Sunday 22nd

May.

The Racing Executive are mindful of our duty of care to the Racing Fleet and the Volunteers on our Duty Boats and, given

the forecast below (www.bom.com.au) the decision to postpone was made at Saturday 21st

May at 3:43.

Coastal Waters Forecast for South Australia Issued at 3:40 pm CST on Saturday 21 May 2011 valid until midnight Tuesday Gulf Waters: Gale Warning. Saturday until midnight : Winds: North to northwesterly 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 20 to 30 knots during the day and

reaching 25 to 33 knots over Spencer Gulf. Winds easing to west to northwesterly 20 to 30 knots during the evening.

Possible thunderstorms during the evening. Seas: rising to 2 to 3 meters. Swell: Southwesterly about 1 meter on southern

Spencer Gulf increasing to 1.5 meters late in the evening. Sunday : Winds: Northwest to southwesterly 20 to 30 knots, increasing to 25 to 35 knots early morning then easing to

20 to 25 knots during the evening. Seas: 2 to 3 meters. Swell: Southwesterly 2 to 3 meters on southern Spencer Gulf and 1 to 2 meters on southern Gulf St Vincent. Please Be Aware:

Wind gusts can be a further 40 percent stronger than the averages given here, and maximum waves may be up to

twice the height.

As the series progresses we will make the decision whether to reschedule or abandon this race. Please note that due to the terminology used in TopYacht our results sheet for this series will show an ABN, however at

this stage the race is postponed.

RACING MANAGER’S REPORT

~ Jess

Winter is almost here again and it’s starting to get pretty chilly - which means the Short-handed Short

Course and Port River Marine & Combined Winter Series have begun!

The Racing Executive attempted to introduce a new series this season. The ‘Lightly-crewed Short Course’

was to be run in conjunction with the Short-handed Short Course, and allowed up to 4 crew on board. It

was hoped that the introduction of this series would encourage a few more boats to get out on the water,

but unfortunately we only had a total of 3 nominations for the series, so the series will not be going

ahead. The Start Boat will, however, still be starting the second race and those who would like to follow

the course for practise are more than welcome to join in for a casual entrance fee. This would be highly

recommended to those newer boats and skippers out there who are trying to get their heads around

starts etc. Please contact me for more information.

The Short Handed Short Course Series kicked off on Saturday the 14 May 2011 with 6 starters, and is

being sponsored by the Patten Family who are donating their tasty Canegrass Saltbush Lamb for the

Barbie after the race, as well as a take home BBQ pack of Saltbush Lamb to the first yacht on handicap.

As you know, our Sponsors are very important to the Racing Association – and we are always open to new

sponsorship opportunities. The Racing Association is in the process of working on a variety of enticing

sponsorship packages, so if you or someone you know would like to sponsor the Racing Association,

please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me for more information.

The Combined Winter Series was scheduled to start on Sunday the 22 May, but just like last year, the

decision was made to postpone the first race due to the horrendous weather. This call was made on

Saturday afternoon, which gave skippers ample time to inform their crew. Given the conditions on

Sunday, where Adelaide recorded it’s strongest winds for the year, this was a good call by Race Officer

John Gibson and REX Chair Traci Ayris.

Presentation Night was held on Friday the 6th

May 2011, and was a great evening of prizes, food and

entertainment. For those of you who not there, you missed a fantastic evening – be sure to get involved

next year! More on the night later in this newsletter.

Most of you should by now be aware that the Racing Executive has released a Draft Program for Season

2011-2012, along with a questionnaire and open forum for comments – thank you to those of you who

have sent in their comments and suggestions so far. The REX has been working hard to include all

feedback into the draft, which we will have ratified at the Racing Association AGM.

The Racing Association AGM is scheduled to be held on Friday the 31st

July 2010, so be sure to lock that

date into your diaries. More information will be released closer to the event.

Please note that Nominations for the Racing Executive have now opened. You can find the

nomination form on the next page of Downwind.
