The Rocking Horse first opened its doors in May of 1977 in its original location on 8th Street East, before moving to its second store- front at 799 2nd Avenue East (now the current home of The Frog Pond Café). Soon after officially opening the store, Mattice met Haswell who was, at the time, work- ing at the library. She started working part-time at the store and approximately 33 years ago, the two became partners. They soon found that their space wasn’t big enough to accommodate When someone decides to go into business for them- selves, they most likely spend the majority of their first year of operation judging their success on a month-to-month basis. But when you’ve expe- rienced nearly 40 years thriving in the heart of Downtown Owen Sound, it’s safe to say you’ve done something right. Such is the case for Dianne Mattice and Deb Haswell, co- owners of The Rock- ing Horse, the popu- lar toy store located at 843 2nd Avenue East in the city’s Downtown core. This May will mark their 40th year of operating their specialty store and for these ladies, success and fun are one and the same. “It’s a fun environment, a happy place to come to,” says Mattice. “People are buying for their children, their niece or nephew. It’s always a nice thing that they’re doing when they make a purchase, so that makes it a feel-good place.” “It’s a pleasant atmosphere,” agrees Haswell. Mattice, the store’s original owner, didn’t always have children’s games and play- things on her mind. She moved to the area in 1977 when her job with The Bank of Montreal brought her to Owen Sound from her native city of Toronto. After she arrived, she recognized a demand for a specialty toy store in the city. “The only place you could buy toys then was the Tow- ers department store Business Name Volume 2017, Issue 2 April 2017 Newsletter 854 2nd Avenue East Owen Sound, ON N4K 2H3 p. 519.376.9225 f. 519.376.3908 downtownowensound.ca Inside this issue: The Rocking Horse celebrates 40th anniversary 1 Neighbourhood News & Notes 2 2017 Schedule of events 3 Upcoming Downtown Events 3 You’re invited - 5th Annual AGM and Spring Party 4 OSDIA Board of Management 4 OWEN SOUND DIA QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER Thank you to David Moss Cornet for the photo in this month’s banner. their growing clientele and faced their first major decision as co-owners relocation

ldquoWe knew we needed a bigger location and the decision at the time was lsquoDo we move to

the (new) Heritage Place Mall or do we move into (the current) buildingrsquo which was just

being built at the timerdquo explains Haswell ldquoAnd we decided lsquoWersquore just Downtown peoplersquo

and Irsquom so glad we made that decisionrdquo

That decision turned out to be a great one upgrading from 400 square feet to their current

space of 1600 square feet And with the increase in space came the increase in customers

As the years went by Mattice and Haswell began to

notice that their original patrons were starting to

bring their children and grandchildren into the store

that they had once frequented ldquoGrandparents are

probably at the top of the list customer-wise but

honestly itrsquos the families Basically everyone be-

tween the ages of 28 and grandparentsrdquo says Mat-

tice

While families make up their burgeoning clientele

itrsquos the family atmosphere inside the store that helps

draw them off the sidewalks Currently staffed with

six employees (including Mattice and Haswell) long-

time employee Ally Strutt hired in 2002 says the

independence of a small business is what creates

such an enjoyable working environment

ldquoBecause itrsquos an independent store the staff becomes really close really fast and hold a re-

spectful bond and friendship which makes it fun to come to workrdquo says Strutt ldquoEven as a

part-timer you feel like you have a really important role in the success of the businessrdquo

ldquoWe try to provide the best shopping experience Period So that people come in they re-

member it theyrsquore happy and they leave satisfiedrdquo adds Haswell

Another secret of their success according to Mattice is one of the biggest things that set

them apart from other stores their selection They offer a wide variety of childrenrsquos toys

and family games and rank Playmobil products puzzles and Lego as some of their best

sellers They also provide beautiful helium bal-

loon bouquets and arrangements

ldquoWe have people that come from Kitchener

from Toronto Therersquos one couple from To-

ronto that comes here specifically to shop for

their children and they canrsquot get over the se-

lection that we haverdquo she adds ldquoThey just

stumbled upon us I think we know our market

really wellrdquo

With its brightly coloured sign and unique window arrangements itrsquos hard not to stumble

upon these Downtown Owen Sound dwellers ndash and thatrsquos just the way they like it

ldquoIrsquom just a downtown shopper it doesnrsquot matter where I am Irsquom drawn to the Downtown

because Irsquom going to find unique stores Irsquom going to find a store thatrsquos not in every mall and

thatrsquos why I like itrdquo says Mattice (conrsquot on page 3)

Last year The Rocking Horse began offering online shopping which they say is in turn bring-

ing more people into the store Once in the store customers are given the opportunity to

join their loyalty program which offers complimentary gift wrapping Small perks like this that

can help endear a business to its community and Haswell says thatrsquos all a part of catering to

your crowd

ldquoThe store has done well because of three things hard work perseverance and knowing your

market Those are the three things that if you follow them yoursquoll be successfulrdquo she states

ldquoNot to say there havenrsquot been ups and downs in 40 years every business has themrdquo adds

Mattice ldquoYou learn from them Yoursquore in charge of your own destiny What you put into it

you get out of it You work really really hard and it will pay offrdquo

As a thank you to their faithful customers both young and old The Rocking Horse will be

hosting a 40th birthday celebration on Saturday June 10 in the parking lot located behind

their store The day-long party will feature a cake free loot bags for the first 100 children and
