Creation of theDowntown Community Services Center

Situation

• Each day in Kansas City, Missouri over 600 men, women and children are in search of emergency services.

• Presently, these emergency services are spread out over a 35 block radius.

• The Downtown Council of Kansas City has created a Human Services Committee that proposed the construction of a centralized services center.

Presently Homeless Emergency Services are spread out over 35 blocks

Downtown Council proposes the Downtown Community Services Center (DCSC) as one centralized facility

DCSC

In 2007 the Downtown Council purchased a facility to house the new Downtown Community Services Center

In January 2008, ReStart Inc., opened its new daytime shelter at the Downtown Community Services Center

Services provided by ReStart at the DCSC:

• Serving over 125 clients daily

• Provide shower capability

• Provide laundry service

• Phone, fax and mail

• Doctors & Counselors

• Case Workers

• Housing Referrals

As a result of the new DCSC, ReStart Inc. was able to provide the following services:

• 9,333 Unduplicated homeless persons served • 5,222 Showers • 2,018 Laundry

Persons entered into case management• 455 Persons placed in permanent housing• 143 Persons increased income • 50 Through employment

33 are making the following monthly:• 19 $1, 000 - $1,500• 9 $1501 - $2,000• 5 $2001 +

In August 2010 Episcopal Services will open its new Community Kitchen in the DCSC. This kitchen will feature

the following:

• A new state of the art kitchen• Upgraded dining facility• Ability to serve over 100 clients at one time• Provide multiple meals though out the day• New meals-on-wheels program for 500 families• Safe access to emergency services provided by ReStart
