This week in EYFS we have learnt all about the superhero, Superduck. He saved his friend Frog who was being carried away by a kite in a big gust of wind. We then decided to design and make our own kites. We had a go at flying them out on the
big playground and thought about what materials worked best, and if we were going to make them again how we would change them. In Maths we have been
thinking about numbers all the way to 10. We started by looking at a domino, counting out manipulatives onto the dots on each side. We then found the total of the dots by moving our manipulatives onto a tens frame and then found the correct numeral on a number fan. On
Wednesday we got to take part in a skipping workshop. We learnt how to skip forwards and backwards and played lots of fun games with the ropes. Ask us to show you!
Year 1
This week in Year One we have had loads of fun reading the story of The Day the Crayons Quit. We explored what a letter was and couldn’t believe it when a letter came to the school addressed to us from Duncan! He asked us to write to the
crayons and persuade them not to quit, so that’s just what we did! In Maths we have continued to learn how to subtract. We have learnt various methods for this
and have now also consolidated our understanding of addition as the inverse of subtraction. We loved having our skipping workshop at the beginning of the week.
We really impressed the adults with how much we had learnt in the session and carried on practising after on the playground. We finished the week with a super Science day testing materials to make a coat for Woody. We looked at whether each material was strong, transparent and waterproof.
Year 2
In English in Year 2 we have made our own non-fiction books about lions. Our books include a front cover, contents page, introduction, main sections and blurb. They could be best sellers! In Maths we have learnt about shapes. We
have deciphered the properties of 2D shapes and discussed symmetry. On our computing day we have been photographers. We discussed what makes a
good photograph using key terms of focus, framing the object, background, lighting and zoom. Then we took photographs using iPads and edited them using editing software. We have some
photographers in the making!
Skipping Workshop
This week all children (and some adults) took part in a skipping workshop where they were taught the fundamental basic skills of skipping as well as new tricks and
techniques. This was funded by Sports premium money which certainly contributed to the national initiative to make children more active. They had a great time and are enjoying practising what they learnt during play times and lunch times. We want
to encourage this as much as possible as skipping is such a great way for your child to stay fit and healthy! Children are welcome to bring in their own skipping ropes to use but please
ensure they are named. Photos will be on the website soon.
Piano Donation
A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Hill who have kindly donated a piano to the school and to the Friends of Downs View for organising this and its safe arrival at school, as you can see from the pictures this was not an easy task! We hope this will be put to good use!
Adverse weather arrangements At this time of year we like to take the opportunity to remind you of the procedures
we put in place should we have any adverse winter weather. If it has been snowing heavily we will do everything we can to make sure the school
is open however we have to take in to account the number of staff able to get to school and the safety of children and adults on the school site. Mrs Kent will liaise
with Mrs Seal/Mrs Wratten at Kennington Academy and make a joint decision as early as possible in the morning. If we have heavy snow we request that all children bring in a packed lunch as we may not be able
to provide a school dinner. We may also have to delay the opening of Breakfast Club until 8.15am to enable us to make sure
we have enough staff and the school site is safe. If any of these measures are put in place we will keep parents informed by putting up to date information on:
Website: www.downs-view.kent.sch.uk Kent Closure site: www.kentclosures.co.uk
BBC Radio Kent Facebook
We will also contact parents via parent mail.
PLEASE NOTE: As long as we have enough staff and the site is safe the school will be open.
Headlice There have been several cases of head lice in school. It is important that you check your child’s hair regularly to help prevent them spreading to other children.
If you find head lice, your local chemist or family doctor can advise on treatment and which lotion to use.
If your child has head lice you will also need to examine the heads of all other members of the household. If head lice are found they should also be treated at the same time.
Every day matters….. every minute matters.
Threadworms
There have been a few reported cases of threadworm in school. The NHS give the following
guidance, if you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact our FLO, Sam Ansell via the school office on 01233 632339
Threadworms (pinworms) are tiny worms in your poo. They're common in children and spread easily. You can treat them without seeing your GP. You can spot worms in your poo. They look like pieces of white thread. You might also see them around your child's bottom (anus). The worms
usually come out at night while your child is sleeping. A pharmacist can help with threadworms - You can buy medicine for threadworms from pharmacies. This is usually a chewable tablet or liquid
you swallow. Treat everyone in your household, even if they do not have symptoms. Tell the pharmacist if you need to treat a child under 2, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. If treatment
not suitable, you may need to speak to a GP.
Things you should do at home
Medicine kills the threadworms, but it does not kill the eggs. Eggs can live for up to 2 weeks
outside the body.
There are things you can do to stop becoming infected again.
wash hands and scrub under fingernails – particularly before eating, after using the toilet or changing nappies
encourage children to wash hands regularly
bathe or shower every morning
rinse toothbrushes before using them
keep fingernails short
wash sleepwear, sheets, towels and soft toys (at normal temperature)
disinfect kitchen and bathroom surfaces
vacuum and dust with a damp cloth
make sure children wear underwear at night – change it in the mornin
Safer Internet Day 2020 – Design a Poster
As part of Safer Internet Day 2020 we would like the children to create a poster explaining how to
be safe when you are on the internet. The posters will be displayed around the school and one
winner will be chosen from each year group. We hope the children enjoy creating these and
learning about internet safety. Entries to be in by 24th February.
Safer Internet Day 2020 is all about your identity. Your
identity is what makes you… YOU. It’s what makes you
unique, or special. There are so many amazing things
that you can do online, and ways to express, and be,
yourself.
Can you create a poster explaining how to be safe
when you are on the internet?
That may be when you are playing a game, watching a
video, reading an e-book, using smart devices or
streaming television.
The posters will be displayed around the school and
one winner will be chosen from each year group.
Entries to be in by 24th February.
