BRISTOLPOUNDOUR CITY. OUR MONEY.
Welcome to the Bristol Pound DirectoryBristol is a city that is independent through and through. Our city grows so many forward thinking social movements, and is often at the forefront of cultural and technological innovation. Bristolians are curious and refuse to take no for an answer, and we attract others who are likeminded to join in. The Bristol Pound was born here 5 years ago. And why not? It is natural that Bristol would be the place to not only challenge monopolies held by big business, but to create a solution. Why should we have money that leaks out to shareholders and the Cayman Islands, when we could make our own and build a resilient localised economy?
This directory contains the finest of Bristol’s local business. We are very proud to be able to promote them and recommend that you use your money to get behind what they do. Businesses can only accept Bristol Pounds if they are independent and willing to spend our city’s money onwards into the local economy, meaning you can be sure that every business listed here is working to make Bristol’s local economy thrive. Over 700 places you can spend Bristol Pounds are listed in the following pages, giving you a local choice in almost all situations.
Bristol Pound not only helps you to choose the best of local business, but spending them also passes on your values so that the people who you shop with, in turn, choose to support our local economy..
Thanks so much for using Bristol Pounds. You, the people who use them, are what make this work. It is your city, and your money.

Bristol Pound is Bristol’s currencyBristol Pound is money made by the people of Bristol, for people in Bristol. When you spend Sterling, only a small amount stays in the local economy, whereas Bristol Pounds have to stay in Bristol, where they circulate boosting local business. It’s money that builds a greener, fairer, happier city.
It sticks up for the little guy too. We all love Bristol. Its creative, different, independent businesses make it an amazing place to live. Big chains are occupying our highstreets, and their ubiquitous advertising gives them an advantage. Bristol Pounds advertise
only local independent businesses and help Bristolians to choose keep buying locally, meaning these high street heroes grow a base of loyal customers.
There are paper notes, and digital money. Bristol Pound notes are beautiful trading tokens that flow through the city. Most Bristol Pounds are spent digitally however, with an app, by texting, or via the online banking system. To get digital Bristol Pounds, you can open an account with the Bristol Credit Union – your wonderful financial co-operative providing ethical and honest banking services for everyone in Bristol.
What happens to the money you spend?
Bristol Pounds circulate in the cityInstead of money leaking out of our city, as it does when you spend Sterling, Bristol Pounds circulate, ensuring the benefits of trade are passed on to other people and businesses in Bristol.

About Bristol pounds
The financial system is broken – we can fix one part of it...There are multiple problems with the financial system – how money is created by commercial banks as debt; how information and power is held secretly and centrally; how debt is packaged and traded; how money is circulated and accrues in tax havens etc. We are angry about all of them and as currency activists we are campaigning to change them. Bristol Pound doesn’t fix all these issues but we are one part of the puzzle.
Our contribution is to change the rules of how money moves in cities and stop it leaking out to big business and tax havens, give members a say over our money system, and to promote Bristol.
What we are
A way to support Bristol’s independent sector, rather than big highstreet chains.
A currency for people, not banks, preventing money from disappearing into global financial systems.
A tool to make our economy greener, by shortening supply chains and building more resilient local links between us all.
What we’re not
A system that creates money. Bristol Pounds are backed 1 to 1 with Sterling.
A Fintech start up. We’re a community interest company meaning any profit we earn goes back into our work.
Bitcoin. Our financial ledger is held by the credit union rather than by nodes on the internet…
It’s a cliché that Bristol has an independent spirit, and I’m wary of pushing the argument too far as I’m fairly sure that Birmingham, Manchester et al also have plenty of local verve. But maybe Bristol has the edge with it being smaller!
Local businesses make a city distinctive. Bristolians and visitors alike want to go to local places, eat local food, drink local beers and wines, buy local products, and generally experience the unique bits of the city they’re either living in or visiting. What’s more, both groups are drawn to new shops, bars & restaurants.
And when unique and new local businesses are mapped onto an interesting city geography and industrial heritage, that’s what gives things character. So here in Bristol, you’ve got community buzz in a number of locations, from the traditional settings of St Nicks market to Cargo’s modernist containers at Wapping Wharf.
Bottom line, no one wants “samey” city developments. Which is where Bristol Pound comes in as an expression of our passion for the city and to help reinforce our local values. One day, there’ll be local currency schemes in all the major provincial cities, and we can take great pride in the fact that Bristol is the pathfinder for the others
in the UK. Bristol Pound has also hosted visiting delegations from both Barcelona and Paris in the last few years, keen to explore their own potential complementary currency schemes.
The great thing about entering the world of Bristol Pound is that it takes you on a fascinating journey round the city, learning about and exploring new member businesses. Why not join me in bringing Bristol Pound into your life - it’ll make your travels as a consumer round the city so much richer.

About Bristol pounds
transparent and removing the need for profit hungry banks. Mutual credit schemes want to redefine transactional value altogether. Alternative currencies work within the constraints of our existing financial system and change what money can be redeemed for.
The theory behind alternative currencies is the local multiplier effect. In essence, the more money spent with local independent businesses, the more money stays in the local economy, benefitting the people who live and work here. But the outputs of a local currency are much more radical than that. In a city where people literally riot to prevent a Tesco opening on the UK’s longest strip of independent businesses, what other financial alternatives do we offer our community?
The Bristol Pound encourages its users to be ethical consumers. To buy products that were grown or produced nearby. To use the local greengrocers instead of the Sainsburys ‘local’. The community wants to prevent the highstreets of Bristol from becoming homogenised carbon clones of Cabot Circus and every other shopping mall up and down the country, and the Bristol Pound is a tool to recognise which businesses are willing and able to trade
with other independents, and reinvest in the local economy.
It’s not a perfect system. Contrary to what some believe, we are not a squeaky clean, well-funded organisation with offices in City Hall and a healthy annual reserve. Grown up from a team of volunteers in 2012, our team now consists of 9-part timers managing an impressive 2000 accounts. With an online banking platform, a mobile app, a text payment system and various cash points dotted around the city, the Bristol Pound should be accessible to all. You can use it to pay your council tax, your energy bills and to buy your weekly veg box. Each time you use it, you’re making an important point about the state of our financial system.
The Bristol Pound has gained a lot of traction around the world. Communities visit us from France, Denmark, the Netherlands – even Brazil, looking to set up similar projects. I’m encouraged by the explosion of global community action following a catastrophe as great as the financial crisis of 2008. Change is coming to our money systems, and if you live in Bristol, you’re can take part in the largest alternative currency system in the UK. You too can be a financial activist – you rebel.
An opinion, by Ruby Szarowicz – userLocal currencies are a rebellious act. The communities in the towns and cities who adopt them have a shared mission; to redefine the way we live and work with money. As financial activists, we are not alone in our mission, nor do we all agree on how to achieve our aims. We are one solution in a sea of voices and opinions, but it’s important to contextualise what brought us all to believe that change was needed in our financial system.
The year 2008 brought us the biggest banking collapse since the 1920’s. It was sparked by a loss of confidence by investors in the mortgage and loans market in the US, and its tremors were felt in economies around the world. The effects on ordinary people; soaring unemployment, unattainable housing
prices, austerity, more homelessness and a rapid growth in inequality. The phallic towers in the city of London no longer seemed so impenetrable and some communities and campaigners started to challenge the myth that we can have endless economic growth on a finite planet.
Many campaigning groups have emerged since then to draw attention to the urgent need to reform our financial system. Positive Money and the New Economics Foundation focus on challenging government policy on money creation, while many grass-roots organisations have established themselves by reimagining the way we transact with each other; for example mutual credit schemes, community funds and alternative currencies.
Exciting developments in technology are unfolding in the new economic movement, but no new model is without criticism. Fintech and Apple Pay want to make us feel like something is changing, by allowing us to tap our cards and phones to pay, hassle free. But behind the scenes, nothing is changing; banks are creating and transacting money in exactly the same way. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin want to change who controls the ledgers, making them more
Local currencies are a Rebellious Act
The community wants to prevent the highstreets of
Bristol from becoming homogenised carbon clones of
Cabot Circus and every other shopping mall up and down
the country, and the Bristol Pound is a tool to recognise
which businesses are willing and able to trade with other

About Bristol pounds
I live on Bristol Pounds – they’ve changed my life for the better. As someone very aware of the problems with our money system, it’s a practical means to improve my happiness and my health, as well as support and enhance my community. Today I made an effort to only spend Bristol Pounds. Here’s how.
First thing I pop over to Mark’s Bread for a loaf fresh from the oven, and pick up some eggs and butter from Southville Deli while I’m out. I tend to pay with the paper notes for smaller amounts. I’m running low, so I stop by Compuwave and withdraw £B50 from my account using the app. I love the withdraw function – it means I never have to touch a Sterling note!
I head home for scrambled eggs, then
on to work. Late morning, a colleague pops out to get a round of coffee. I’m at my desk, so I log into my Bristol Pound account through the website and send her the £B1.90.
For lunch I’m lucky to have the joyous selection of St Nick’s Market nearby. I use the app to navigate to the ones taking Bristol Pounds – it’s a helpful way to choose from all that’s on offer. A few taps and I’ve got a quiche and salad from Ahh Toots. I grab a card and some batteries while I’m in the market.
Home after a good day, I check my post. We have a bill from Bristol Energy so I pay it right away using £B online banking – while I’m logged in I check I’ve got enough in my account for my monthly council tax payments. I see my weekly veg box payment automatically went out today too.
I used to find shopping a really unenjoyable experience – not just the knowledge that I was feeding the corporate machine, but the interactions themselves too. Now it feels like with each transaction I’m a financial activist: changing the system, localising supply chains and getting wholesome and genuine human interaction along the way. Not to mention getting the best value local products and services.
