• The licensing environment for your CAD/CAM system is a necessary part of the overall system’s ability to function.

• Choosing the right licensing tools to insure proper functionality is something that should be considered

• This unique and important topic will focus on CATIA and its licensing tools.

• It will provide the fundamentals of license allocation as well as the concepts of managing of licenses within CATIA and License Use Management Runtime (LUM).

Note: Most references in this presentation pertain to the Windows Operating System. Please refer to the Using License Use Management Runtime Version 4.6.8 and alsothe CATIA Documentation for UNIX platforms.

Two License OptionsNodelock Licensing• Consists of simple file containing a license key in order to start an

application. • The license is restricted to the machine by the targetid for which the

key was generated. • Simplest in form • It has limitations

Concurrent Licensing• Requires a License Manager (LUM)• Uses one or more servers to distribute licenses over a network.• Easy to administer• Provides flexibility• Allows for reporting

Concurrent License Server Options• Simple Network License Server

One or more servers configured to use Namespace and or Direct binding each distributing licenses in a client server network.

• High Availability Licenser Server (HAL) Three or more license servers tied together by a clusterID in the event of a failure the remaining servers assume the role of the failed server while serving licenses in a client server network.

License Use Management Runtime (LUM) Tools

• LUM offers many useful tools• accessed from the command line and or GUI interface

some examples:• i4tv (test verification tool)• i4target (target view tool)• i4cfg (configuration tool)• i4blt (basic license tool)

i4tv (test verification tool)• Used to verify the server is running properly

usage: i4tv [-h] [-usage] [-version] [-n hostname] [-z] [-v] [-p]

i4target Tool and win32mac targetid• When a license is needed for a Windows machine you “MUST”

provide a win32mac targetid to the Key Center. A win32 targetid is not sufficient.

• The win32mac address comes from the driver for the lan card, not from the card itself. It maybe necessary to use the i4target tool options to produce a valid targetid

i4target –O command

Provides: targetid, target type, device driver identifier, LUM level and copyright information.

Getting a win32mac targetid i4target –z (Provides the list of device drivers for network card(s)).

i4target –d (with device drive identifier) Sets the device driver name for the targetid in the machines registry.

• After running the “z” & “d” options and running i4target -O a valid win32mac targetid should be provided.

• In some instances it may be necessary to run the “regedit” command first and remove the I4DRIVER from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/IBM/License Use Runtime

i4cfg (configuration tool)

• -h Display this command help• -start Start all the subsystems you have configured to run on the machine• -stop Stop all the subsystems that are running on your machine• -list Display a list of active subsystems• -script Start the interactive script to configure your machine (UNIX only)• No options starts the GUI interface

i4blt Basic License Tool Command line usage:• Checking the license status on a server:

• Additional information is provided which is not given with i4blt –s.Vendor ID, Product ID, server information, start & expiration date of the license, time stamp and more are provided. This type of information is necessary when managing licenses from the command line

i4blt –C (clean stale license)Occasionally a license will become stale. Issuing the i4blt –C command pollsthe license server for licenses in use. If it finds that a license is not being usedit will free it for use. Note: This is after the licensing time-out period.

Open as details allows you to look at license details (in this case IG1 selected) such as Vendor ID, Product ID, server information, start & expiration date of the license, time stamp and more are provided.

General Help

• Cleaning Stale LicenseOccasionally LUM will lose communication with CATIA and a licensemay become “STALE” (after the license timeout period). Cleaning upstale licenses occasionally is a good practice. If you see a license andit appears to be in use when it is not, use this GUI action or thei4blt –C command. This should free the license for use again.

By selecting one of the keys so it highlights, click with your mouse the word Selectedor right click with your mouse and select: Clean up stale licenses and execute it you should get the message:

Useful CATIA Tools CATIA has a number of tools that will beboth necessary and useful. This next sectionis dedicated to identifying and presenting these tools.

Getting a win32mac targetid using “CATIA’s Nodelock Key Management Tool”

Getting a win32mac targetid using “CATIA’s Nodelock Key Management Tool”Select in the following sequence on Windows:Start/ALL Programs/CATIA_P2/Tools/Nodelock Key Management Note: You will get 2 screens one being a warning indicating you do not havea nodelock file. This is not a problem! Just a message indicating that there is currently no Nodelock file.

Clicking OK to acknowledge the message closes the message. You will now see the entire Nodelock Management Tool.

• The targetid is used when ordering license keys for this machine.• LUM i4target.exe was provided by CATIA and is used by this tool. • The targetid result is the same as if you ran one of the i4target commands.• This tool is useful when LUM has not been installed.• It is also used to Import, add, read, extract, restitute and clear nodelock keys.

Targetid Bad?If the target ID is all 0’s (Windows only) than there is a problem.You will need to use the i4target –z and i4target –d commands tomanually set device driver name in the registry.

Viewing Products Contained In a Configuration

Selecting the Licensing Tab will provide you licensing information.

To see the products included in the selected configuration, go to the Shareable Products Tab. In this instance it is the DP2 Config.

This is a list of product that getgranted for yourselected configuration.In this case theyare for DP2 configurationCC1, GD1, GDR and ID1

Additional products and shareable license availability

• There are many products that can be used with configurations. • Selecting them in the Tools/Options/Licensing tab than starting CATIA. The user

will hold this license until he logs out of CATIA.This is referred to as “static license allocation”

• Only selectable licenses are available.• Licenses that are not available are underintensified.• The server is identified where the licenses reside. If there are more servers they

will be listed

Note: You must take at least one configuration license statically in orderto start CATIA.

Shareable (dynamic) license allocation• In many instances Static License allocation is not practical. Sharing a

license is more practical. • The IG1 – CATIA – IGES INTERFACE 1 Product is a SHAREABLE product.• This means you can DYNAMICALLY allocate this product.• This is done by selecting to the product in the Shareable Products Tab

after CATIA has been started with a configuration.• The square turns ORANGE then selecting OK pulls the license • If the license were not available a message would be provided indicating

so.

When the user is done with the license (in this case IG1)it is simple to return back to the pool for availabilityBy selecting:Tools/Options/Shareable Products Tab Finding: The product/selecting (square is not ORANGE ) selecting: OKThe license is returned for availability by others.

Note: You do not have to stop & restart CATIA to allocate orreturn the license.

Locking licenses in CATIA

• In CATIA there is ability to LOCK specific things. • You may see a lock that is either open or closed in some of

the Tools/Options panel. • The CATIA administrator has the ability to create locks. • For licensing it is the License and Shareable Products tabs.• In order to set locks the CATReferenceSettingPath variable

must be set for the CATIA environment, using the Environment Editor.

• Once the CATReferenceSettingsPath has been set you can login into CATIA in admin mode to begin setting license locks (CNEXT –admin)

• This next panel is the License Manager Panel. (notice there are now open green locks)

• These locks can be used to enforce restrictions to configurations and products.

• Access can be restricted to:- All licenses- Some configurations and products- Individual configuration- Individual products

Selecting the product you want the user to start CATIA with and locking a product.

Example: • Selecting the blank square box next to the DP2 license. • Then selecting the locks for DP2 and IG1.CATIA will start with DP2 and lock out IG1 at startup. The user can than select the license in the Shareable Products Tabdynamically.

Selecting IG1 in the Shared Products taballocates the license without leaving CATIA

Selecting IG1 again will make the license available to others without closing CATIA.This is considered dynamic allocation.

Server Timeout • The server timeout feature can be set to adjust the amount of time the CATIA will wait for a response from a license server before checking for licenses on additional severs.

• Beneficial in high performance networks and servers not heavily loaded

• Not recommended in a low performance network where servers maybe heavily loaded

FrequencyControls the amount of time in which CATIA’s “heartbeat” communicates tothe license server. This frequency (heartbeat) is communicated by CATIA tothe server when the license is first requested.

Frequency (Continued)

• Is set in increments of 1 minute to a maximum period of 17 minutes. The default is 17 minutes.

• In the event that there is a CATIA crash, network problem, or server outage the license(s) can be hung up to a period of 17 minutes depending on the time of the last heartbeat check.

• When there is a server outage or network problem CATIA will give the user the ability to save their work. It actually enters a countdown mode (special mode) where CATIA will make a new license request in 1 minute intervals for five attempts. If it fails it will give the user the ability to only save or exit without saving.

Note: Decreasing the heartbeat can lead to increased network load.

Concurrent Offline Licensing• Available for CATIA on Windows only and not in a High Availability Licensing

Cluster (HAL)• Concurrent offline allows a user to extract a license from a license server and

allows the license to be used on a laptop disconnected from the network for up to 30 days maximum.

• When extracted from the server it works just like a nodelock license.

The license is “Extracted” by theCATIA Nodelock License Manager Tool and returned with the “Restitute” option.

License Server Requirements• You must have a license server running LUM 4.6.7 or higher and

CATIA V5R12 minimum to be able to use Concurrent Offline Licensing.

• Stop your license server and run the i4_offline_mig.exe to convert the licenses to concurrent offline license.

It is not available with the LUM 4.6.8 code. The executable is available from PLM website:http://www-306.ibm.com/software/applications/plm/support/prodannounce.html

• After restarting the license server and selecting a product then “Open as details” you will see that the tab for Concurrent has changed to Concurrent-Offline.

To get the license for use offline you must Extract the key from the server. This is done with the Nodelock License Manager in CATIA.

Selecting the license will highlight it than saying Extract it will bring up the Password entry window

• Before extracting the license you have the opportunity to reset the license duration for a lower number of days.

• After extracting the license from the server you can disconnect from the network. The license will be in the nodelock file and usable for the specified amount of days.

• In the Tools/Options/ Licensing tab the CATIA License Manager will show the license in blue and identify it as a local license.

• The license can be returned to the license server before the expiration date is reached with the File/Restitute command in the Nodelock License Manager.
