WINTER ACTIVITIES

ICE SKATING Weather PermittingThe Downers Grove Park District maintains unsupervised ice skating at Prince Pond, Whitlock Park and McCollum Park. Hours are 8:30am to 10pm daily from approximately mid-December through February. Portable restrooms are provided at McCollum Park and Whitlock Park.

It takes several days of sub-zero temperatures for sufficient ice to form. Ice maintenance will occur after staff has completed snow plowing duties for the day.

Ice Skating Conditions

Please locate the flag pole at each location for current skating conditions before stepping on the ice. Staff monitors thickness and requires 6 inches of ice to open for skating.

Green flags: Indicates ice rink conditions are safe at cleared spots only.

Red flags: Indicate dangerous skating conditions; rink is closed.

If you witness an emergency, please dial 911 immediately.

NATURE PROGRAMS

WINTER 2020NATUREPLAY SCHOOLNurture your little sprout in our early childhood program based on the forest school model! Research has shown outdoor nature-based exploration and play to be the perfect groundwork for meaningful learning and growth. Lyman Woods' NaturePlay School provides this and more! We strive to lay a foundation for making meaningful connections to our environment, while also working on science skills, language, math and interpersonal skills. Your child will plant trees, build forts, care for a garden, sing around the campfire, visit with our naturalists, foresters and other guest speakers, hike and explore our trails, and spend time each class in the Wild Woods, our popular nature play areas. We spend as much time as possible in our outdoor classroom of 135 acres of woods, wetlands and prairie, but the Interpretive Center serves as our home during inclement weather. A healthy snack will be provided during each class. The Friday session can be attended as a standalone one-day session, or can be added to any two-day session to extend the learning and fun.

Class will not be held on District 58 school holidays. Priority registration for current students for the Winter/Spring 2020 session begins October 14th at 8:30am. Open registration for new students begins November 11th at 8:30am. Students must turn 4 by the first day of class. Registration is kept open throughout the school year, provided openings are available.

Pre-K Ballet/Hip HopDuring the ballet portion of the class, dancers will be taught the classical techniques of ballet including terminology and positions. They will also work on strength, balance, flexibility and posture. The hip hop portion will teach popular street moves along with developing a sense of rhythm through hip hop choreography.

Pre-K Ballet/Tap I & IIDuring the ballet portion of the class, dancers will be taught classical techniques of ballet including terminology and positions. They will also work on strength, balance, flexibility and posture. In the tap portion of the class, students make music with their feet through different rhythms. Overall, students will become familiar with following directions in a group, taking turns, moving across the floor, balancing and sequencing exercises.

Tap IDancers learn how to manipulate their foot and ankle to create rhythmic tap combinations. Different combinations of steps create different rhythms, accents and syncopation. Tappers focus on using a wide variety of steps while keeping their weight distributed on the balls of their feet and using their heels when necessary. The melodic tapping enhances memorization of dance combinations and creates an ease to balance and performing!
