Wireline Operations - Toolstring
Wireline ToolstringA wireline toolstring is essential for the effectivemanipulation of sub-surface flow controls beingdeployed from surface on wireline, into the well.By controlling the direction of tool travel at surface, the toolstring operator provides the impact loadsrequired to manipulate the devices being deployed. This operation is referred to as "Jarring Action".The toolstring also provides the weight required toovercome friction and pressure differential withinthe stuffing box, allowing the tools to descend intothe well.Cromar wireline toolstrings are supplied either withconventional threaded connections or withproprietary quick release connections.
Typical Wireline ToolstringA typical wireline toolstring consists of the followingcomponents:
• Wireline Rope Socket:attaches the wireline to the toolstring.
• Wireline Stem Bar(s):provides the weight required to create an effective jarring impact.
• Wireline Knuckle Joint(s):aligns the tools in the well, preventing themfrom hanging up; improves the jarring action.
• Wireline Mechanical Jar(s):acts like a sliding hammer, utilising the weightof the stem bars to convey a powerfuljarring impact.
• Wireline Tool:carries out the particular service requiredby the operator.

Disc & Spring Rope SocketCromar Disc & Spring Rope Sockets are used toattach wireline to the toolstring and arepredominately used with wireline sizes up to andincluding 0.092”. The rope socket assembly consistsof a body with external fishing neck, spring, guideand wire carrier. The wireline is passed through the body, spring andguide before being wrapped tightly around the wirecarrier. The short end of the wireline is firmlywrapped around the long end of the wire carrierusing twelve to fifteen close wraps. A clean breakmade close to the last wrap allows the spring andguide to pass over the wraps. The knot is theninstalled into the body.
Pear Drop Rope SocketCromar Pear Drop Rope Sockets are used to attachwireline to the toolstring and are predominately usedwith wireline sizes from 0.092” to 0.125”. The ropesocket assembly consists of a body with an externalfishing neck, sleeve and a brass wedge (“pear drop”)which is grooved to accommodate the wire and comescomplete with a securing grub screw. The wireline is passed through the body and sleeveand wrapped around the groove in the pear drop. Thepear drop is then pulled tightly up into the matchingtaper on the sleeve. The pear drop knot is theninstalled into the body.Pear Drop rope sockets have to be ordered to suit thewire size being deployed.
Clamp Rope SocketCromar Clamp Rope Sockets are used to attach braidedcables to the toolstring and are predominately usedwith cable sizes up to and including 5/16”. The ropesocket assembly consists of a body with an externalfishing neck, threaded bottom sub and cable clampcomplete with set screws. The cable is passed through the body into the cableclamp and secured into a recess using three set screws. When weight is applied, wedge shaped contour jawswill secure the cable in the clamp.

Lead Filled Wireline Stem BarCromar Lead Filled Wireline Stem Bars, often referredto as “sinker bars”, are designed to serve twopurposes. They provide the weight required toovercome friction and pressure differential withinthe stuffing box during wireline operations, allowingthe toolstring to descend into the well. They alsoprovide kinetic energy, which is converted into adownward or upward jarring force as required.Lead filled stem bars are utilized as a substitute forconventional stem bars when extra weight isrequired. However, they should not be used inoperations where heavy jarring is expected.Cromar Lead Filled Stem Bars are available invarious diameters and lengths. They are suppliedwith industry standard pin by box connectionscomplete with fishing necks.
Tungsten Filled Wireline Stem BarCromar Tungsten Filled Wireline Stem Bars, oftenreferred to as “sinker bars”, are designed to servetwo purposes. They provide the weight required toovercome friction and pressure differential withinthe stuffing box during wireline operations, allowingthe toolstring to descend into the well. They alsoprovide kinetic energy, which is converted into adownward or upward jarring force as required.
Tungsten filled stem bars are utilized as a substitutefor conventional stem bars when extra weight isrequired.Cromar Tungsten Filled Stem Bars are available invarious diameters and lengths. They are suppliedwith industry standard pin by box connectionscomplete with fishing necks.
Roller Wireline Stem BarCromar Roller Wireline Stem Bars are designed toreplace conventional stem bars for operations indeviated well bores. The rollers on the stem barrun along the underside wall of the tubing. The useof rollers greatly reduces the friction thatconventional stem bars would encounter.Roller stem bars are conventional sinker bars, modified with milled slots to accommodate simpleroller wheels. The wheels run on high tensile steelaxle bolts, which are locked in position by roll pins.Cromar Roller Stem Bars are available in variousdiameters and lengths. They are supplied withindustry standard pin by box connections completewith fishing necks. Wheel diameters are sized asrequired to suit the tubing.
When ordering, please specify required rollersize.
Link Wireline JarCromar Link Wireline Jars, often referred to as"spang jars" or "mechanical jars", are designed toact like a sliding hammer, utilizing the weight ofthe stem bars located immediately above, to conveypowerful jarring impacts. Upward and downwardimpacts (jarring actions) are achieved by controllingthe direction and speed of the wireline at surface. The effect of a given jarring action will depend onthe speed of movement, stem weight, the jar’sstroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluidviscosity and well pressure.Link jars consist of two sections that are linkedtogether like a chain. Both halves of the jar are freeto extend or collapse over a controlled stroke length.Standard stroke lengths are 20", 24" and 30".Cromar Link Jars are available in various diametersand stroke lengths. They are supplied with industrystandard pin by box connections complete withfishing necks.
Hydraulic Wireline JarCromar Hydraulic Wireline Jars are normally situatedabove a set of mechanical link jars. They are designed to deliver a controlled upwardimpact load during wireline operations. The closedhydraulic system within the jar makes it possiblefor the jarring action to be controlled within a broadrange, from a very light impact to one of substantialforce.During normal operations, a controlled pull is appliedto the wireline, which lifts the top sub and mandrelupward, while the piston is momentarily held backby the hydraulic fluid. This impeding action allowsan adequate pull to be applied on the line to achievethe required jarring intensity. When the pistonpasses from the cylinder bore into the larger by-pass bore, the fluid resistance is reduced, allowingthe mandrel to accelerate upwards and strike themiddle body insert which conveys the jarring forceto the toolstring. The jar is closed and reset for repeat operation byslacking off toolstring weight, which telescopes themandrel back into the tool. A spring loaded checkvalve (valve plug) opens to allow oil to flow throughthe piston easily as the mandrel moves downwards.A balance piston at the lower end of the middlebody is free to move up and down to compensatefor the internal volume changes and equalize internaland external pressures as the jar is operated.Cromar Hydraulic Jars are available in variousdiameters and are supplied with industry standardpin by box connections complete with fishing necks.
Spring Wireline JarCromar Spring Wireline Jars are normally situatedabove a set of wireline link jars. They are designedto deliver a high upward impact load during heavyduty wireline operations. The spring wireline jar is a simple mechanical toolwhich actuates when the operator applies a steadypull to the wireline. The pulling action causes thespring to compress fully, allowing locking balls torelease and free the inner mandrel which thenaccelerates upwards and strikes the top sub, creatingan upward jarring force.Spring jars are just as effective as hydraulic jars.Because they are completely mechanical, springjars do not suffer from the hydraulic jar’s inherentproblem of “gassing up” and so they are practicallymaintenance free. When the wireline is not particularly elastic, orwhere jarring has to be carried out near to thesurface, a Cromar accelerator (stretch simulator)should be used to provide the jar with the necessaryenergy. It is important to note that the force required toactuate the spring jar must be at least equal to thespring force. Therefore the line pull at surface mustovercome the spring force plus the buoyant weightof the toolstring and wire, as well as frictionalforces. When applying the required line pull, it ispossible that the yield strength of the wireline maybe exceeded. This situation must be consideredbeforehand in order to avoid breaking the wireline. For instance, in deep wells, the lightest spring shouldalways be fitted.Cromar Spring Jars are available in various diametersand are supplied with industry standard pin by boxconnections complete with fishing necks.
Tubular Wireline JarCromar Tubular Wireline Jars are designed to actlike a siding hammer, utilizing the weight of thestem bars located immediately above, to conveypowerful jarring impacts. Upward and downwardimpacts (jarring actions) are achieved by controllingthe direction and speed of the wireline at surface. The effect of a given jarring action will depend onthe speed of movement, stem weight, the jar’sstroke length, tubing size and deviation, fluidviscosity and well pressure.Tubular jars are used during fishing operations, when the jarring action of standard link type jarscould be impeded by wire, debris or other foreignmatter in the tubing. Tubular jars can also be usedwith toolstrings being deployed inside large tubingor casings, where conventional link jars tend to lockup and buckle at full stroke.Cromar Tubular Jars are available in variousdiameters and stroke lengths. They are suppliedwith industry standard pin by box connectionscomplete with fishing necks.
Knuckle JointThe Cromar Knuckle Joint is designed to provideflexibility within the wireline toolstring. One ormore knuckle joints can be inserted into the toolstringat the operator’s discretion, to meet operationalrequirements.A knuckle joint is particularly useful when it issituated below the jars, to provide angular movementbetween the toolstring and the running or pullingtool. This is especially advantageous during sidepocket orientation with kick over tools.Cromar Knuckle Joints are available in variousdiameters. They are equipped with industry standardpin by box connections and double fishing necks.
Knuckle JarSimilar in design to knuckle joints, the CromarKnuckle Jar incorporates an extended ball mandreland ball mandrel body. This small internal strokeallows the knuckle jar to be used for light jarringoperations.Cromar knuckle jars are available in variousdiameters and come with industry standard pin bybox connections. All Cromar knuckle jars come withdouble fishing necks.
Swivel JointThe Cromar Swivel Joint is designed to minimise linetwisting during deployment of the toolstring. Dependingon operational requirements, one or more swivel jointscan be inserted into the toolstring above the jars, atthe operator’s discretion.Swivel joints are particularly useful when handlinglong tools, as the operator does not have to rotate thetools manually during change out.Cromar Swivel Joints are available in various diameters. They are supplied with industry standard pin by boxconnections and double fishing necks.
CrossoverCromar Crossovers are designed to connect twotoolstring items with different connections. They consistof a single body with industry standard pin by boxconnections complete with fishing neck.Crossovers with proprietary connections are alsoavailable on request.
Shock AbsorberThe Cromar Shock Absorber is designed to dampenimpact shock loads that can occur during wirelinedeployment and so prevent damage to sensitiveinstrumentation being run on the toolstring. The shock absorber consists of a main body, top sub(fishing neck), bottom sub, inner mandrel and upperand lower absorber springs. The lower spring isheavier than the upper one, as it has to sustain thetool weight. The floating action of the mandrelagainst the springs dampens the shock loads.Cromar Shock Absorbers are available in varioussizes, for H2S and standard service. They can be supplied in stainless steel on request.
AcceleratorCromar Wireline Accelerators are designed tosimulate line stretch when jarring at shallow depthswith spring or hydraulic power jars. Positioned abovethe jars in the toolstring, the accelerator assists inmaintaining a constant pull as the power jar opens. After the jar has fired the spring(s) in the acceleratorabsorbs the recoil action of the toolstring on thewire, releasing the energy stored within the spring(s).Cromar accelerators are available for all toolstringsizes, with industry standard pin by box connectionscomplete with fishing necks.

Hydrostatic BailerThe Cromar Piston Hydrostatic Bailer is designed toremove debris which has settled on top or arounda subsurface control within the well, preventingretrieval by regular wireline operations. A hydrostaticbailer is used when debris cannot be removed witha normal pump bailer assembly. The hydrostatic bailer’s upper section consists of achamber sealed at surface atmospheric pressure, complete with a relief plug at the top and shearpiston subassembly on the bottom. The piston ispinned to the bottom sub prior to deployment. The bailer is activated by jarring downward, whichshears the pin on the piston. Well pressure thencauses the piston to accelerate upward, creating asuction which draws the debris into the tool.Cromar Hydrostatic Bailers are available in varioussizes and are supplied with industry standard pinconnections complete with fishing necks.
C-GS Pulling ToolThe Cromar C-GS Pulling Tool is designed to deployand retrieve sub-surface controls with internal fishingnecks. The C-GS pulling tool is of the “jar/shear down torelease” type. It can be converted to a C-GR “jar/shear up to release” tool, by installing a C-GU shearup adapter. The C-GR type of tool is recommendedwhere downward jarring on the sub-surface controlis required prior to pulling. The C-GS pulling tool consists of a cylinder completewith top sub, inner core and spring loaded dog set.Once the tool has been engaged on an externalfishing neck, a downward jarring action will sheara pin to release the spring loaded dogs and allowthe tool to be retrieved.Larger sizes of C-GS pulling tools have a pinningring. The pinning ring compresses the main spring, allowing the operator to install the shear pin safely.Once the shear pin has been installed, the pinningring must be backed off prior to deployment.C-GS pulling tools are available in various sizes. They are supplied with industry standard pinconnections complete with fishing necks.
Please refer to C-GU adapter section.

Continued upward movement then causesthe arm to “kick over” into the mandrel pocket. The C-OM-1 kickover tool consists of a top subcomplete with fishing neck and pin connection, anupper body with locator finger and kickover springs,a lower body with arm assembly with a boxconnection and an arm housing (tray), which protectsequipment being deployed and retrieved from theside pocket mandrel.A knuckle joint should be run above this tool toassist with orientation. Spacer bars are requiredwhen retrieving valves from MMG side pocketmandrels.
Split Skirt Wirefinder (One Piece)The Cromar Split Skirt Wirefinder is designed tolocate and ball the upper end of the broken wirelinein the well bore during fishing operations. The wireball can then be engaged by a wireline grab andretrieved. The wirefinder is deployed into the well attachedto a light fishing toolstring by means of a dummyrope socket and pulling tool. Once the wirefinderhas located and set down over the end of the brokenwireline, downward jarring action will cause thewire to be bailed or bent over into the tubing, forming a ball. When ordering please specify Cromar productnumber and actual OD of tool required.
Expandable Split Skirt WirefinderThe Cromar Expandable Split Skirt Wirefinder isdesigned to locate and ball the upper end of thewire in the well bore. The ball can then be engagedby a wireline grab and retrieved.Similar in design to the conventional type ofwirefinder, the expandable wirefinder has an externalNo-Go sleeve that retains the fingers while the toolis being deployed into the well. The No-Go sleeveis then landed and sheared out, releasing andexpanding the fingers. This action allows the toolto be deployed from a smaller tubing into a largerone.Care should be taken to correctly size this tool tothe No-Go nipple located at the intersection betweenthe larger and the smaller tubing. The expandable wirefinder is a non-stock item whichis manufactured to customer specifications for eachparticular application. When ordering please specify Cromar productnumber and actual OD of tool required.

Wire GrabThe Cromar Wire Grab is designed to retrieve abroken wireline during fishing operations, after asplit skirt wirefinder has been deployed to locateand ball the upper end of the wire in the well bore. The wire grab consists of a top sub complete withfishing neck and pin connection and a body withtwo or three bendable prongs. Each prong has severalpointed barbs welded on the inner side to formhooks. The flexible design allows the operator tobend the grab prong ends to suit the tubing ID whichhelps to prevent the wire grab from bypassing thebroken line. The wire grab is deployed into the well attached toa fishing toolstring by means of a dummy rope socketand pulling tool.
When ordering, please specify Cromar productnumber and actual OD of tool required.
Centre SpearThe Cromar Centre Spear is designed as a “lastresort” fishing tool, to retrieve broken wireline fromthe well. This tool is not recommended for generalwireline fishing operations. The centre spear shouldonly be used in cases where the wire is balled upso badly that it is impossible to get hold of it witha standard two-pronged grab.Once wire is wrapped around this tool, it cannot bereleased until it reaches the surface. The centre spear is deployed into the well attachedto a fishing toolstring by means of a dummy ropesocket and pulling tool.
Wireline RetrieverThe Cromar Wireline Retriever is designed to locateand retrieve cut or broken slickline or small diameterbraided cables from the well bore, during fishingoperations. The wireline retriever consists of a top sub completewith fishing neck and pin connection, mandrel, body, spear point, slip and split skirt. The retriever maybe dressed with the appropriate sized split skirt tomake it adaptable to various sizes of tubing. In operation, the wireline retriever is deployed intothe well on a fishing toolstring. As it descends, wellfluid and friction cause the skirt to ride up on themandrel, exposing the spear point and the gapbetween the spear and the skirt. Tool contact withthe broken line is indicated by a loss of running-instring weight. Stopping causes the skirt to movedown the mandrel, wedging the caught line. Thewireline is then pulled up, securely wedging thebroken line into the tool.Wireline retriever bodies are available in 1 1/2” OD& 1 7/8” OD sizes.
When ordering, please specify Cromar productnumber, body size and OD of skirt required.

Skirted Magnet-132Tar Baby-134
Skirted MagnetThe Cromar Skirted Magnet is designed to retrieveferrous debris from the top of tools in the well. The skirted magnet consists of a top sub bodycomplete with fishing neck and pin connection, magnet and skirt. The skirt is manufactured froma non-magnetic material and has two main functions, namely to prevent debris being dislodged duringretrieval and to prevent hindrance during runningand pulling, by keeping the magnet off the tubingwall. When ordering, please specify Cromar productnumber and actual OD of tool required
Tar BabyThe Cromar Tar Baby is designed to retrieve loosesmall objects from low temperature shallow wells.Similar in design to a conventional lead impressionblock, the tar baby consists of a top sub body completewith fishing neck and pin connection. Internally thebody is filled with an appropriate type of tar to suitthe well temperature conditions. When ordering, please specify Cromar productnumber and actual OD of tool required.
Rotary Wireline CuttersThe Cromar Rotary Wireline Cutter is designed to cut solidwirelines (0.092”, 0.108” & 0.125” OD) or swabbing cables(3/16” & 7/32” OD) when the toolstring becomes stuckin the well.
Standard CutterThe standard cutter is deployed into the well under itsown weight, guided by the wireline or cable. When thecutter strikes the rope socket on the stuck toolstring, theshock is transmitted to the rotating knife, which cuts thewire. The rotating action of the knife pushes a taperedslip upwards, wedging and locking the wireline or cableonto the cutter. This locking action allows the cutter tobe recovered to surface on the wireline.
Interface CutterThe Cromar Interface Wireline Cutter should be usedwhen there is a risk of the wireline or cable being cutprematurely. The cutter is deployed into the well under its own weight, guided by the wireline or cable and lands on the ropesocket of the stuck toolstring. A flat bottom “go-devil”drop bar is then deployed to operate the cutter. The dropbar strikes the inner sleeve of the cutter, which drivesdownwards to rotate the knife, which in turn shears thewireline or cable. The rotating action of the knife pushesa tapered slip upwards, wedging and locking the wirelineor cable onto the cutter. This locking action allows boththe cutter and the drop bar to be recovered to surfaceon the wireline. After each operation, the cutter must be stripped down, thoroughly cleaned and inspected for wear or damage.
CentralisersIt is important to deploy cutters and drop bars withappropriately sized slip over centralisers fitted. Thisprevents the cutter or drop bar from wedging with thelost toolstring.
Sidewall CutterThe Cromar Sidewall Cutter is specifically designedto cut wireline against the tubing wall, when a solidfooting required by other types of cutter is notavailable.Cromar sidewall cutters are available for all tubingand casing sizes and grades, with ID’s ranging from2 3/8” to 7”.
When ordering, please specify Cromar productnumber, tubing size and grade.
Alligator GrabThe Cromar Alligator Grab is a special fishing toolwhich has been designed to engage and retrievemiscellaneous loose objects from the well. The alligator grab consists of a top sub completewith fishing neck and pin connection, mandrel, spring with adjustment ring, and a main bodycomplete with scissors movement and jaws.By adjusting the spring tension prior to deployment, the operator can predetermine the amount of jawpressure on the tool. The alligator grab tool is notdesigned to endure heavy jarring operations onceengaged onto the fish.
