RF.K.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes) Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single syllable sounds First: Cut out the initial sound (onset) cards Cut out the ending sound (rhyme) cards Cut out the picture cards Next: Give student a bag (or choice of onsets) They pick one initial (onset) letter and tell you the letter name and the letter sound The teacher picks the ending sounds (rhyme) Put the onset in one hand and say the sound and the rhyme in the other hand and say the sound, push them together and say the word Have the students repeat the word and then they find the picture that matches it from a pile of pictures laid out nearby Place the word on the table (floor) and have the students put the picture next to it. Reconfirm the word by pointing to the onset and rhyme, underlining it with your finger and saying the word and pointing to the picture repeating the word. Con’t this process making multiple words You can begin with one word family at a time adding more word families as students become comfortable and are able to easily switch back and forth between word families
