Southwest Medical GuideWinter 2009

2008-09 has been a year of change in the Douglas medical community. It started with the closing of one longtime clinic, Arizona Family Care Associ-

ates (AFCA), and continued with changes in services at the remaining clinics, doctors changing affiliations and new physicians moving to the community.

The area is currently served by four clinics, including two operated by the areahospital, Southeast Arizona Medical Center:

√ Southeast Medical Center Clinic, located at 1906 11th Street.√ Community Healthcare of Douglas Clinic, located at the hospital at 2174 W.

Oak Avenue in Douglas.√ Copper Queen Medical Associates, located at 100 E. Fifth Street and affiliat-

ed with Copper Queen Hospital in Bisbee. √ Chiricahua Community Health Center is located at the corner of 11th Street

and F Avenue in Douglas and has clinics in Elfrida and Bisbee.

Continuing education and striving to become better are two of the main goals of South-east Arizona Medical Center, all the while maintaining the highest healthcare standards forthe residents of Douglas and surrounding communities.

Built in 1905 in the present location, and known as Cochise County Hospital, the hospi-tal would on average have 100 patients checked-in.

Southeast Arizona Medical Center provides general medical and surgical care for inpa-tient, outpatient, and emergency room patients, and participates in the Medicare and Med-icaid programs.

Chiricahua Community Health Centers,Inc. was founded in August of 1996. Jennifer"Ginger" Ryan worked with local communi-ty members in the development of a grass-roots movement to bring quality affordablehealthcare to the residents of the SulphurSprings Valley.

This group received their first grant in1996 which enabled them to form a 501c3non-profit, with a volunteer board of direc-tors. This in turn allowed the organization toinitiate health services in the Elfrida Com-munity Center. The local community centerwas "creatively redesigned" to create a clin-ic like atmosphere with reception, adminis-tration, patient rooms, laboratory and sup-

port services under one roof.It wasn't until 1999, that the first perma-

nent clinic was built on the property to thenorth of the existing CommunityCenter/Clinic site. On August 12, 2003, thisfacility was dedicated to one of the foundingboard members, Cliff Whetten.

In 2001, the second health center openedin Douglas, Arizona. In 2003, ChiricahuaCommunity Health Centers, Inc. added anadditional clinic in Bisbee, as well as a Mo-bile Medical Unit that traveled throughoutCochise County enabling patients who facedgeographic as well as financial barriers to re-ceive quality affordable healthcare.

In December 2005, Chiricahua Communi-

ty Health Centers, Inc. expanded its servicesagain by opening its newest and largest clin-ic in their system, the Jennifer "Ginger" Ryanclinic. This facility enabled the organizationto provide extended hours as well as extend-ed services such as pediatric care.

In the summer of 2006, Chiricahua Com-munity Health Centers, Inc. added a MobileDental Unit in order to provide preventivedental services to the children of the SulphurSprings Valley.
