• Most of UDEM agreements are concentrated in North America and Europe.
• 51% of our bilateral agreements are in 5 countries: U.S.A, France, Spain, Germany and Canada.
• Most of our student mobility for outbound (50%) and inbound students (70%) relies on bilateral agreements.
• There is no correspondence between the destination countries for our outgoing students and the countries from where students come to UDEM.
98% of undergraduates
and 87% of graduates want to participate in study abroad.
Undergraduates prefer semester (70%) and summer
programs (43%), while graduates prefer double
degree programs (59%) and short summer programs 1-2
weeks (51%)
Most important factors when:choosing a country choosing a university1. Prestige 1. Country and prestige2. Language 2. Academic offer3. Living costs 3. Language4. Location 4. Location (City)
5. Recommendation by faculty6. Recommendation by a study abroad advisor
3 Building strategic partnerships• Initially, in 1997, all agreements were
focused only on student mobility.
• A need for expansion and a wide offer of programs and institutions was imperative.
• Internationalization plan: strategic international relations is one of the three main strategies.
• In 2008 a new position to manage all partnerships and agreements is created.

Strategy Current situation
Goal for 2020 How?
To differentiate transactional and transformational
partnerships
Most of the partnerships
are transactional
To have more than one form of
collaboration with 1 of every 10 partners.
-To broaden collaboration beyond student mobility. -To privilege bilateral agreements for double degrees, summer
programs and visiting faculty.-To identify more than one venue of cooperation when signing
new agreements.
To create synergy with other areas for the construction of
partnerships
There is very little synergy.
At least 2 out of 10 agreements are related with the
interests and projects of other
departments.
-Use faculty led programs, summer courses, visiting professors as vehicles for building partnerships.
-To formalize existing collaborations. -To link accompanying faculty in summer programs with
agreements and projects in negotiation. -To identify common interests and goals.
To establish UDEM offices abroad.
There are none.
To have at least 1 office abroad.
-Use alumni and former employees to create strategic relations-Agents to recruit students
-Offices that take care of diverse projects.
To communicate international
activities, accomplishments
and opportunities.
It is miminum, there is no
official media.
Send at least 1 semestral newsletter
(internal) and 1 annual newsletter
(external)
-To create a communication plan.
3 Building strategic partnershipsGENERAL STRATEGIES
3 Building strategic partnerships
Strategy Current situation Goal for 2020I. To establish criteria for new
agreements:1) Academic programs with less options
2) Countries with unbalanced agreements or with high demand by students
3) Prestige
4) Countries with potential to send students to UDEM.
Criteria are not cleary defined:
1) 13 programs have insufficent options
2) 9 countries have most of the agreements unbalanced
3) 51% of bilateral partners are ranked, among them 45% are top 500 institutions
4) There are bilateral agreements with only 7 of the 20 countries identified.
Criteria are established and followed:
1) Increase at least 10% annually the options for these programs.
2) Sign at least 2 agreements per year with those countries.
3) Maintain the percentage of ranked institutions above 50%
4) Sign at least 2 agreements per year with these countries.
II. Search of new programs:
1) Double degree programs: academic programs that do not have this option.
Double degrees AT UDEM. Online options for graduate students.
2) Short programs, internships, consortia
1) Only 17 programs have double degree options and they are concentrated in three schools. No double degrees are
offered at UDEM.
1) Schools that do not have double degree options for all their majors will
have at least 2 double degree programs. Establish at least 3 new double degree
programs at the graduate level. 2) Maintain a portfolio of all these options available for all programs.
SPECIFIC STRATEGIES: student mobility
4 Double and Dual Degree Programs at UDEM
UDEM currently offers 14 Double or Dual Degree Programs.Every process has presented different challenges as each program has been tailored to match the student needs with the academic and administrative features of each program.
The biggest challenges:• Matching the academic calendar of each university• Agreeing on courses validations and credit transfer• High tuition costs, which limit the number of participants.• Operational matters such as the logistics of the program itself.• Recruiting strategies.• Changing the mindset of students and faculty

4 Double and Dual Degree Programs at UDEM
• From 2000 to 2014 UDEM has had a total of 84 success stories.
• Next Fall 2015 six students will start their Double Degree in France – a very popular destination.
• The most succesful program is the one established with Nagaoka University of Technology (Japan) for the Engineering programs. It is the most comprehensive program we have because it involves faculty and student mobility, as well as research and academic collaborations.
