Ronda - Spain

Ronda is one of the oldest cities in Spain, having origins in the Neolithic age, according to the archaeological findings in the old part of the city.

There are several archaeological and documentary references that prove Ronda’s long history as an area of grapevines and wine. The first ones are linked to the Iberian-Roman city of Acinipo (47-44 BC), in which we can find the typical grape cluster, which demonstrates without any doubt the importance of grapevine in the economy of these communities.

It is strategically located in the heart of Andalusia, to the South of the Iberian Peninsula. Its territory extends over 1,536 km2 and includes more than twenty white villages with strokes of red, green and yellow of their plants.

As far as topography is concerned, it is formed by an enormous plateau over 700 metres above sea level, with some peaks rising to over 1500 metres.

Due to its wealth and diversity, a large part of its natural territory is protected:, the most important being the three Natural Parks: Grazalema, Sierra de las Nieves and Los Alcornocales.

To enter the Serrania de Ronda (Ronda’s Mountains) is to encounter diversity in all senses. It means finding harmony in life, geography, history, nature, gastronomy and even in legends, which compose this region of nature that preserves with jealousy its identity mark.

H i sto r y The winery Bodegas Excelencia was born in 2006, when a group of friends and nature lovers purchased an 8-hectare plot of land in the Township of Ronda (province of Malaga). For us, it was very important to locate this project in a wine producing region, rich with history, being committed to excellence in wine-growing and in harmony with the environment: the property is surrounded by olive trees and hundred-year-old Holm oak trees.

The name “Bodegas Excelencia” (Winery Excellence) reflects our initial objective of sparing no efforts and enthusiasm to reach excellence in all aspects of our project, and to constantly improve in order to maintain these high-level requirements.

The winery is built in perfect harmony with the land, fitted onto the slope giving the effect of an underground wine-cellar, providing the perfect environmental conditions for wine aging:

The barrel cellar is situated 7 meters underground, with a surface area of 600 m2, and it currently houses 150 French Oak barrels of different grains and toasts in racks.

In the underground part of the winery there is a temperature controlled wine making and fermentation cellar and an air-conditioned conservation and storage area for the bottles.

The winery also has a laboratory, a meeting room and a 450 m2 terrace. It is equipped with a handmade wood stove and is used for outdoor events, with views of the countryside of Ronda La Vieja, the ancient city of Acinipo and the Sierra de Grazalema mountains.

This cellar has a surface area of 600 m2 and it currently houses 150 French Oak barrels of different grains and toasts on racks. Normally, finer-grained barrels are used for longer aging, since they are richer in eugenol (spices and clover). Medium-grained barrels are used for shorter aging, with sweeter hints (vanilla, caramel and fewer spices).

The wood drying process is 100% natural and it allows a progressive fall and higher quality in the wood’s humidity, as well as to efficiently eliminate the hardest tannins and astringents. The possibility of choosing grains and toasts, combined with the origins of the wood and the types of grains, result in personalised barrels that respond to the needs of each wine and aging period.

The aging process ends with the tasting to determine the final coupages by our oenologist, this being the culmination of all the works carried out with great care during vintage, obtaining the desired results: excellent wines.

To make Los Frontones we start with a selection of different grapes from our vines. Soils: sandy-clay soil with calcareous subsoil.

It is a Coupuage of Syrah (32,70%), Cabernet Franc (27,32%), Cabernet Sauvignon (21,68%), Tempranillo (18,30%).

The bunches, which are collected in 15kg crates, are sorted twice.

After fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels to be aged and later bottled.

This particular vintage was aged for 12 months in new barrels and 12 months more in bottle to give the wine time to develop fully.
