So, you might have noticed something a little different? Bournemouth Music was so well received in the first few months that we’ve started to cover venues and shows even further afield and it just didn’t seem right to leave the rest of the county out, expect to see more from Weymouth, Christchurch, Dorchester, Bridport, even Yeovil (yes, we know it’s in Somerset). New year, new name, same great magazine!

This month we speak to Latin-American heavy metal legends Sepultura ahead of their return to Weymouth. We have a not entirely intended silly conversation with newly reformed Scots popsters Del Amitri and a completely intentional silly conversation with up and coming rockers Max Factor and Fort Hope. Plus of course listings and announcements for all of the best venues and events in the Dorset area.

SEPUTURADORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2014

FEATURE

It was the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil that launched the ascent of their native sons in Sepultura (Portuguese for “grave”) in 1983 with a trajectory unsuspectingly aimed at the worldwide metal music scene. A band with hum-ble economic beginnings whose musical identity was forged in the context of living through Brazil’s authoritarian military dictatorship, Sepultura would go on to become Brazilian ambassadors to the metal world, revered master architects of the death/thrash genre, and the most successful heavy metal band from the Federal Republic of Brazil. When Sepultura experienced a dramatic line-up change in the mid-1990s, following frontman Max Cavelera’s departure, remaining members recruited American Derrick Green to front the band, a position the Cleveland, Ohio native has held for the past fifteen years and counting. This past June, long-time guitarist Andreas Kisser (who joined in1987), original bassist Paulo Jr. and drum prodigy Eloy Casagrande, Sepultura entered the studio in Venice, Califor-nia with renowned producer Ross Robinson (KORN, MACHINE HEAD, FEAR FACTORY) - who also worked on the band’s landmark 1996 release ‘Roots’ - to record the band’s seventh studio album with Green ‘The Mediator Between The Head And Hands Must Be The Heart’ which was released last October.Inspired by Austrian filmmaker Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 movie “Metropolis,” Sepultura lean heavily on the strength of their thrash metal influences to make a statement against the dehumanizing effects of technology. Exploring the miseries and privileges associated with technological power, ‘The Mediator……’ also addresses the chaotic aftermath of natural disasters, the unfulfilled promises of religion, and the still-widening divide & unbridgeable gap between pampered citizens who live in decadent luxury and the working poor who withstand unbearable living & working conditions to simply survive and has widely been recognised as Sepultura’s most accomplished album in years. We can feel the anticipation as the UK finally gets the chance to experience the new album live and as Weymouth readies itself to welcome these stalwarts of the metal world we caught up with Andreas Kisser for a bit of a chat….

Tell us about the new album, how does the concept relate to both the Metropolis movie and your own experiences as a band?In the movie, a crazy millionaire wants to transform a robot into a real person. That’s kind of the opposite of what we live today. More than ever, we are robotized through the worldwide web, Google glasses, chips under our skins and globalized slavery our society suffers nowa-days. Being that the novel was written in the early 1920s, it’s almost prophetical. The phrase that inspired me - the main message of the story - points to the heart as being the human factor that keeps a man a man – not a robot. The heart beats with freedom of choice. We have to think for ourselves to create a real world, not a matrix. I live in São Paulo, one of the big metropolises in the world with more than 20 million people living and working in it. I know how it is to live in daily chaos. Our music reflects a lot of that feeling.

Your style has grown somewhat from your early stuff to the most recent album. What’s had the greatest influence on these changes?I think traveling around the world is a great form to know new things and to bring new ideas to the music. We are always learning something different when we meet new bands on the road. Also I have studied classical guitar for many years and that helps to improve the technical side of my playing.

What kind of response have you had to the album’s release?A very good response, really amazing feedback from everyone.

What can the UK fans expect from the live show?Sepultura is living one of its best moments, we have a strong album out and we will play a lot from it but also we will celebrate 30 years of

Sepultura music. We will play all the songs that our fans expect to hear in a Sepultura concert. It’s going to be a very special tour!

What else are Sepultura hoping to achieve? Are there any milestones still left to hit?I think it is amazing enough to be here after 30 years, still touring the world, playing the big festivals in the world and still loving to be on stage. I love what I do, the rest is just a consequence of this feeling. We have many things to do but to live today is what matters, the present, the now! We wanna play for as many people as we can, no matter where.

What’s been the lowest moment along the road of Sepultura? And what’s been the highest? It’s hard to say, we have had many ups and downs throughout our career. When Max left the band was a really bad moment, we had to build everything from zero but we grew up so much from that, we are a better band today. We have control of our career like no other time, we enjoy working with each other and there’s no drama. That can be considered a high point.

What’s in your packing essentials when you hit the road on tour?Besides the bath stuff and some medicine I like to have books with me. Today it’s much easier to “carry” books on your smartphone so I have quite a few to choose from. An acoustic guitar and a bicycle too!

What music is playing on the tour bus at the moment? We always have the classics, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Purple, etc... but we listen to many things, from Lady Gaga to King Crimson.

ROCK REGENERATION

DORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2014

A new year always brings with it new challenges and new adventures and I am sure 2014 will be no different. The amount of mouth watering new music on offer at the start of the year is just staggering and there’s always the hope of finding a new favourite band or artist.

w w w . r o c k - r e g e n e r a t i o n . c o . u k

Myself and The Rock Regeneration team will be keeping a very close eye on anything new and will bring any new discoveries to you. The end of 2013 was just fantastic I could not have asked for a better way to end the year. The local music scene here in Dorset is just overflowing with great original talent. At the end of November at Chaplin’s Cellar bar was where Eleven XI and the Minor Characters put on a huge night of guitar music playing some great well crafted music which every person in the place enjoyed. At the Anvil at the beginning of December saw the return of local legend Ant Henson who recently had his 5 minutes of fame staring on the TV show “The Voice”. Ant coupled with Mike Ball and folk rock band Black Water County provided a great evening of foot stomping entertainment.

The place to be throughout December was Bournemouth Square where a German Bar, a Christmas market and a large music stage had been put up to entertain shoppers. This gave local music acts an amazing opportunity to perform in front of a large crowds on a big stage. A massive gratitude of thanks must go out to ‘Percy’ (Chris Young) of Pulse PA along with Dan Holbeche and his team braving all weathers to bring this great event to us. There were so many highlights including rock band Voodoo Vegas playing Christmas songs wearing some really uncool festive jumpers, Black Water County together with Walk The Night performing their charity single “Fairytale of New York” and a new young band The Generation impressing the socks of everyone with a 1st class performance. This sort of event brought local music to a new audience and it would be fantastic if something like this could be set up also at other times of the year.

DORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2014 TAKEDOWN | TWENTY 14

Since relocating to Southampton, Takedown Festival has gone from strength to strength, quickly becoming the biggest one day, indoor alternative music event on the South Coast with over 40 acts playing across 5 stages.

This year’s event looks set to be the biggest yet with some huge names like Funeral for a Friend, Kids in Glass Houses and Chimaira plus some hottly-tipped future stars like Canterbury and Yashin already confirmed. We’re also particularly excited to see Jamie Lenman, former frontman of UK alt. legends Reuben, playing tracks from his incredible solo debut double LP ‘Muscle Memory’ on the main stage.

2014 sees Takedown dedicating a whole stage to hard rock and trad metal for the first time, headed up by Heaven’s Basement, who have just returned from an extremely successful US tour. The stage also features Glamour of the Kill, Jett Black, Dirty Youth, Skarlett Riot and more, grab your denim and bang your head.

Also new for this year is the ‘Introducing...’ stage, featuring the best local, unsigned and homegrown talent from across the south including Southampton’s own Dendera, Our Hollow Our Home and Dead amongst others. See the poster overleaf the full line up and visitwww.takedownfestival.co.uk for updates or to buy tickets, currently just £25 plus optional £4 aftershow entry.

How was the band formed? The short story is that we’re four people who have the same taste and ambitions in life and wanted to create music together! The slightly longer version; we were all part of a band called My Passion before this. We all get on so well and the chemistry between us is so good that we decided not to let that go to waste and we formed Fort Hope.

Give us your best name for an imaginary band...I can’t take credit for this but one of Jamie’s suggestions for a band name was “If All Else Fails”. I can’t understand why there isn’t already a band called that! You can almost imagine what that band would look and sound like!

Can any of you play any other instruments?Three of us actually started out on instruments that are different to what we play in Fort Hope. Jon and I both started out on drums when we were very young and Simon started out on guitar. Myself and Jon also play piano and bass guitar. I played oboe for a while and I’m pretty certain Jon has mentioned playing saxophone? Maybe I’m imagining things but I’m sure he could do it!

You’ve GOT to cover a Michael Jackson song, which one would you choose? This has got to be one of the hardest questions I’ve ever been asked. How can I choose just one Michael Jackson song? I think Thriller would be a really hard one to pull off as a rock band, and I love a challenge so I guess I’d go with that. But seriously, I’d happily cover any Michael Jackson song! All four of us are huge MJ fans!

If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?Someone has asked me this before and my answer is a little boring. I would want to spend it with the people I care about most; my family and friends. It’d be cool to think you could try and strike off as many things from your bucket list before you kick it. But if you just have one day left, it’d have to be with the people you love.

Tell us your best golf puns...Golfers would wear wrinkled clothes if it weren’t four irons.

Who would win in a race, Fort Hope or Max Raptor? There’s only one way to find out! Queue Rocky music!

Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck?I get a lot of ideas for songs while in the shower. Being free and cloth-less is a liberating and inspiring experience. You should try it out some time!

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?Imagine 30 Seconds to Mars crossed with Radiohead with a soul singer. That’s what I like to think anyway!

If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go?I’d go back 150 million years and film a real life Jurassic Park music video. People would be thinking; either that’s the best CGI ever or Fort Hope actually rode on a dinosaur.

Why should we come to see your live show?Because it’s going to be fun! All four bands on the tour are great and the shows will be really intimate. And who doesn’t like an up close and personal show? Don’t worry, we smell great!

If you had the chance to give up the band life to become a pirate would you do it?If it’s the old school Pirate we’re talking about then yea, treasure, tropical conditions, rafts, women, rum, the open water, islands, women, treasure, sand, rum...but if it’s a Somali pirate then it’s not for me...rubber dinghy, oil platforms, poor air quality, probable death by propellor and no money....bit like being in a band...

If you had to eat one of the following what would it be: Octopus Tentacles, kangaroo’s tail or zombie brains?Well I quite like Octopus tentacles so that one...Zombie’s don’t exist so I don’t know how that’s going to happen..although I did know a kid at school who used to sit infront of the TV all day and he was a bit like a zombie but I don’t think he had any brains...he stank and I hated him..

How was the band formed?in 2001 we planted an acorn, 2 years later, pete was born. Matt could play all instruments so we just listened to him like a village elder until we began to make noises and write words to the things he was doing and saying...We ventured into punk rock as it seemed like the appropriate sound cause we couldn’t shred.

Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck? In a cave in Gozo...

What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love?Craig David’s rendition of Come Together was a triumph.

If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?Trying to cure my terrible illness...

If you had a snail that could magically grant wishes, what would you name it?Paul

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before? It’s like attempting to describe what food tastes like..just go and listen to it..

If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go?Probably to the 1970’s to Guam

Give us your best name for an imaginary band...Throbbing Gristle (I’m sure that’s a real band? ED.)

Can any of you play any other instruments?Matt at the age of 16 won the European under 21’s accordion and he can basically play every instrument...Ben can play guitar, bass and drums and pete can too... So basically I’m useless so I sing at people and do lyrics.. I once tried to play the violin in a duet at school and faked it whilst my friend picked up the flack...punk as f**k...

You’ve GOT to cover a Michael Jackson song, which one would you choose?Man in the mirror

Tell us your best golf puns...Okay I’ll have a swing at this... Errrrm, I guess anything on a par with the other questions will surely sink us a place in your fine magazine...there’s a fairway to go though until we get to front cover but I’m willing to do anything to make the club. I imagine I’d have to wear something great to appear on it, I’ll have IRON my best jumper so all the other bands will be green with envy...I might even wear my favourite taxidermied necklace, a dogs leg on a chain..anyway I’m going to bunker down as some little birdie is telling me that these are the worst jokes they’ve ever heard..I’ve putt in a good effort though I thought...anyway, I must go, I’ve got wood..and I’m in a restaurant..

Why should we come to see your live show?..don’t expect us to ignore you because we wont..you pay your money and we put on a show...so many bands out there just ‘play’....it’s not about that, we put everything in to the point of illness....maybe that’s why it’s my last day on earth. Come down and you’ll have a damned good time, you might even get a black eye to take home with you...oh and we don’t charge you to talk to us...

FEATURE

DORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2014 DEL AMITRI

With a cast of original members and even the original crew, Del Amitri return from a ten year sabbatical to wheel out every hit from every era of their lengthy recording career. Justin Currie and Iain Harvie will once again be joined on stage by Andy Alston, Kris Dollimore and Ashley Soan.Formed in Glasgow in 1983, during their distinguished career Del Amitri had four Top 10 albums and a string of memorable hit singles. Their million selling breakthrough album ‘Waking Hours’ (1989) included the hits ‘Nothing Ever Happens’ and ‘Kiss This Thing Goodbye’. The follow-up, 1992’s ‘Change Everything’, featured the massive radio single ‘Always The Last To Know’ and reached No.2 in the albums chart, only being held off the top slot by the might of ‘The Bodyguard’ soundtrack. 1995’s ‘Twisted’ charted at No.3 and included their big-gest ever single ‘Roll To Me’, which reached No.10 on the Billboard Hot 100. Del Amitri’s most recent album was 2002’s ‘Can You Do Me Good?’ and the band have been on hiatus since finishing the subsequent tour. It’s been thirty years since debut single, ‘Sense Sickness’ – their contribution to all things early 80s and jangly and The A to Z of Us tour will take a retrospective sweep of the band’s entire back catalogue. “Whenever anyone asked if Del Amitri would ever re-form,” says guitarist Iain Harvie, “our standard response was ‘We never broke up - the phone just stopped ringing.’” It has started ringing now and Del Amitri are picking it up from where they left off. We caught up with Justin Currie as the band head out on the road once again…..

Del Amitri

So, guys you’ve been away for a while…..what have you all been up to?Skiing, mainly - in Wales. I was a train driver for a while and Andy, our organist spends most of his time teaching trumpet. Ashley, who drums, has been drumming for various species of musicians and Kris, who has some guitars and often plays them, has been fertilising fields with some new sort of liquid. Iain (songs and stringed wood) has been studying Germany from the dawn of time. But we always manage to find a window in our busy calendars to get some skiing in together. In Wales.

What was the reaction like to the announcement of the reunion tour?Initially there were riots but that soon settled down into people just chucking the odd brick at the internet. Some young adults became so overcome that medicinal doses of brandy had to be administered. There is a group of fans in Ealing that refuses to believe we exist and that is spreading the rumour (probably true) that the shows will be performed by robots dressed up like extras from Juliette Bravo. One man fell over upon hearing the news, though he was possibly already listing.

How was it the first time you all came together and started rehearsing the old tunes again? It sounded like a barrel full of stoats kicked from the back of a truck. After some adjustments it improved. With further refinement we envision something akin to a well-serviced Mercedes with worn leather upholstery and electric windows (front only) cruising unhurriedly down the highway of Rock.

The music industry has changed a lot since you were last together, how have you embraced the new social media tools?I bought a computer and a mobile phone in 2009 and put them in the freezer. I like to think of myself as ahead of the curl. We receive a great many messages from overseas, mostly from people asking us to not start again or if we’ve already started, to please stop. The problem with the social media is really all the socialising, in our view. We see a return to the traditional methods of promotion - where information is handed down from on high like a totalitarian state introducing a new law concerning

sitting in chairs. The days when all you needed to do was print an enormous poster and drop it over an entire town are sadly gone but MUST be reinstated.

Is there a focus to encourage new fans into the Del Amitri army?Conscription, you mean? Heaven’s no. We see no reason to dispense with the traditional formula of brainwashing through repeated subliminal exposure.

What can we expect from the live show? We’re looking forward to hearing all the hits…..but have you got anything new to show us? I can do the whole thing on one leg now - which, if you ask me, is tremendously impressive. We might do everything in a classical style, with a conductor in a dinner jacket on a podium and some kettle drums that nobody ever plays. I imagine that the most surprising aspect of the thing will be that we have all had gender re-assignment, though I remain unconvinced about the particular one I have been allocated.

Melodic and powerful heavy metal

Marvel at this Ukulele band performing covers and original ma-terial for your pleasure. Using ukuleles of all shapes and sizes the Mother Ukers take you on a musical journey through time and space. With flavours of pop, punk, rock, sixties, fifties blended with the sound and rhythms of the roaring 20′s and seasoned with a touch of the blues in a swamp grass melody.

Sepultura were a major force in the death metal, thrash metal and ultimately groove metal realms during the late 1980s and early 1990s and their popularity hasn’t waned over the years. They’ve successfully transformed them-selves from a primitive death metal ensemble to leading trendsetters of the international agressive music scene.

After the successful skate video: “PRITCHARD VS DAINTON”, these boys were picked up by MTV UK and launched the hit series ‘DIRTY SANCHEZ. It was an instant success and went out to 64 countries with 450 million viewers. Well known for their ridiculous (and painful) stunts you can expect danger, hilarity and a whole lotta fun when these boys come to town.

If you like a singalong with your mosh then The Blackout should be right up your street. Combining heavy crunch-ing guitars, riffs, screams and thunderous drumbeats with beautiful melodies and emotionally driven vocals there’s a reason these guys have been stalwarts of the pop punk rock movement since before there was a movement.

New offering from ex-Dragonforce founder and frontman ZP Theart, renowned for his powerful and recognizable voice, I AM I burst onto the scene with new album ‘Event Horizon’ in 2012. Absolutely jam-packed with wailing guitars, powerful operatic vocals and otherworldly sounds you can be sure of a live show bursting with energy and drama.

DORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2014 GRIEVER

Griever are a metal band from Bournemouth, that combine slamming riffs, crushing breakdowns, technical solos and emotive melodies into their own take on the metalcore genre.

Since the band formed in early 2012, Griever have rapidly become a force to reckon with amongst upcoming bands in the UK metal scene, with sheer hard work and determination being testament to their early success. Their rise in popularity is coupled with their craft of writing emotive lyrics that audiences can scream back, alongside their intense and passionate live performance.

They released their brand new single “My Captain, My King” in April, followed by the release of the debut music video to critical acclaim on BlankTV. With over 10,000 hits in just three months and a huge gain of fans from across the world, “MC, MK” showcases Griever’s clever ear for melody amongst bludgeoning heaviness and strong song-writing far beyond their years.

Their brand new EP “Rebirthing” was released on 2nd December 2013 with a prestigious hometown show supporting American metalcore legends Unearth”

Who’s in the band and what do you all do?David Seymour - VocalsLuke Davis - Guitar / VocalsJohnny Halpin - GuitarGus Wright - BassJoey Beach - Drums

Which bands have had the biggest influence on your music?Collectively we are strongly influenced by old-school metalcore and hardcore bands like As I Lay Dying, Bleeding Through, Hatebreed and Unearth but we all have very different personal influences. For example, Joey is very into Meshuggah and David loves Robbie Williams!

What’s been the highlight of Griever so far?Being able to support some absolutely incredible bands that we love and respect. Opening for Crossfaith last November definitely opened the door for us onto big things and on December 2nd this year we got to support one of all-time favourite bands Unearth in Bournemouth. That was pretty mind-blowing as we’ve only actually been playing shows for about a year and a half, so to play with such a huge influence in our hometown was very special to us. Also, meeting so many lovely people all over the country. We’ve been shown so much love from other bands, fans, venues etc and we’re eternally thankful!

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing new bands trying to break into the industry today?Just getting your name out there. Starting a band is very tough, and to actually start spreading the word about your music is always a challenge. You’ve gotta spend the money on quality recordings, promo photos etc and even then, there is no guarantee that your music will spread. It’s totally worth the hard work and effort though.

Which venue/festival would you most like to play? We’d absolutely love to play The Underworld in London. It’s easily the best metal venue in the country and having seen so many amazng bands grace the stage, we want to be up there! Obviously we’d love to play Download or Bloodstock, playing to so many people would be mad!

If you were suddenly the biggest band in the world, who would you get to support you? We’d put on a monster all day metalcore festival. We’d get all the heavyweights like Killswitch Engage, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Darkest Hour etc to play! We’ll also get Ronan Keating to open, just ‘cos we could.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Griever?Probably just working full-time or studying. Nothing as awesome as being in Griever, that’s for sure!

Why should people check out your live show?People should make their every efforts to see us live because we interact with the crowd, we sweat bucket-loads as we throw ourselves about the stage, and most of all because we are very tight musicians and the crowd can honestly see us having the best time up there onstage!
