Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite
a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.
More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Beckenham Town.
The first qualifying round of the FA Vase is an exciting game, particularly for our young local players, many of whom are only half a dozen games into their senior playing careers. It’s a chance for clubs to make a bit of a name for themselves in this level of non-league football and we know Beckenham Town will be as keen to make a mark as we will. Our visitors play one step above us in the football pyramid, so it’s both a challenge and an opportunity for our team.
No one at this level of non-league football could possibly pay more attention to detail before every match than our manager Danny Fox so we know that, whatever the outcome today, the team could not have been better prepared.
The arrival of Danny and his coaching team in the summer has seen the club make huge strides in its vision of reconnecting the club to the town and building a youthful team, full of locally based players proud to represent their hometown club. The win last week, over a Frimley Green team full of players who decided against staying here when we made the managerial change, was a fully deserved reward for their hard work so far. The performance also showed how much progress they have made in such a short space of time. There’s undoubtedly much more to come from both the management team and this group of players.
DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN
a welcome from the chairman
ALAN GOUT

The club’s aims, the new look team and the style of play are clearly appeals to local people. More than half our team is from Dorking or the immediately surrounding villages and it’s probably no coincidence that, since putting new emphasis on developing local talent, our attendances have been running at more than double the average for clubs in our league. Thank you very much for your support.
I would also like to thank our Dorking FC Matchmakers – the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble, giving spectators a warm welcome. The Matchmakers are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email [email protected].
Thanks must also go to Marc White, Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and picturesque ground they’ve built here available to us. Both clubs are working together to promote grassroots football in the local area with the utmost enthusiasm.
This week has seen a landmark event in the 136
year history of Dorking FC. After some false dawns, the builders have moved in and work has begun on rebuilding our ancestral home ground at Meadowbank. That means we’ll be back playing there at the start of the 2017-8 season.
The rebuilding of Meadowbank with a new clubhouse for the Chicks and a state-of-the-art artificial grass pitch is exciting not just for Dorking FC, but also for the whole community. As well as once again being the home of the Chicks, the new Meadowbank will also be the home venue for Dorking Wanderers, a training facility for local youth clubs, and the headquarters of Surrey FA - putting Dorking FC at the heart of a new hub for football in the county and giving a real boost to the town centre.
So there’s plenty to look forward to. But, for the here and now, we hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.
Kind Regards
Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for this afternoon’s FA Vase game. I’d like to
welcome the players, management team and officials of Beckenham Town and am looking forward to what I’m sure will be a tough contest.
We go into this game off the back of a good result against Frimley Green last Saturday. The win felt like it had been a long time coming, given that some of our previous performances had not perhaps got us the result they deserved.
The whole defence was superb, with centre back Brandon Watts and debutant keeper Jake Nimmo putting in performances that defied their tender ages. Our midfield was more industrious than in it’s been in recent weeks, and you can’t ask much more from a substitute, in the case of George Knight, than to come on and score the winner. So all in all it was a very good day.
However, one result doesn’t make a season however and today is another opportunity to carry on and see if we can perform to that level week in, week out against different types of opposition.
A quick update on the squad. We have signed Jake recently following Tom Day’s injury against Cobham. Jake played under Richard Webber at Leatherhead in their youth teams and performed particularly well last weekend, given that he only joined the team for

the first time on the previous Wednesday evening. The introduction of Jake was largely brought about by Ethan Belward having more of an opportunity to progress in the Worthing youth team. Ethan has worked hard since the summer to push Tom as hard as possible for the number one jersey. We still retain his registration for senior football but he has a fantastic opportunity ahead and we wish him all the best with it. We have also signed Jimmy Brazil, who makes a welcome return following his displays last season. I’m sure his versatility and experience will be a good addition to the squad.
Our youth squad made their debut in the FA Youth Cup this week and, as I write this on Thursday, Ryan Lunn and Jack Wisbey are preparing to play in the Ryman Youth League side against Guildford City. We wish them and their team mates all the best in what is a fantastic cup competition and a vital part of their development.
I hope you enjoy the game.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE
RICHARDWEBBER
It’s probably fair to say that, in manager Danny Fox’s squad combining local youth with the
wisdom of experience, Richard Webber is much more at the experience end of things.
Indeed his long career includes great experience of today’s competition, the FA Vase. He classes his appearance in the FA Vase Quarter Finals as one of his football highlights, and it’s undoubtedly the fact he’s “got the T shirt” that made the manager keen to bring in Richard as one of the senior players his new young squad could learn from.
“I broke my jaw and ankle and decided to concentrate on my coaching, so I hadn’t played for a couple of years when the manager first spoke to me about Dorking,” Richard says.
“I was Head of Youth at Leatherhead and knew Danny from when he came scouting for Crystal Palace. I was attracted by his philosophy of building a new Dorking first team around developing young local players, so it didn’t take much persuading for me to want to be part of it and get back to playing.”
Richard spent pre-season working hard on his fitness and made his first start in last week’s win over Frimley Green. It’s surely no coincidence that the whole team, including the younger players, showed a greater resilience and managed the game to see out the result, despite late pressure from the visitors.
Despite some ups and downs in the first few weeks of the season, Richard is confident that the Chicks are learning quickly and will push on.
“It’s a very close league, anyone can beat anyone,” he says. “If we keep playing the right way, as we have done so far, the results will come. A top six finish is very possible.”
With many years of non-league football behind him, Richard’s well placed to give an insight on what it’s like to play for the Chicks. He says the worst thing has to be the cold showers.
But the best thing? “KFC in Dorking!”
Perhaps experience can’t teach you everything…

Dorking found the right combination of attacking flair and defensive resilience to earn a fully deserved win
over a Frimley Green.
Frimley are managed by one-time Chicks’ midfielder Dan Huxley and arrived with a team containing a number of former Dorking players who chose to move on in the summer following our managerial changes and rebuilding around local youth development.
Having seen his side play well but suffer some heavy defeats through youthful inexperience in recent games, new Dorking boss Danny Fox was looking for a little more maturity to guide the younger players. He found it in the return of Chicks stalwart Jimmy Brazil, back to match fitness after being unavailable for pre-season.
Frimley quickly set out their stall – a physical presence upfront in striker James Robertson and a muscular midfield led by former Dorking man, Dan Akinwande. But centre backs 17 year old Brandon Watts alongside the more experienced Paul Gough kept Robertson quiet, while the full backs Brazil and Richard Webber prevented service to him from the wings. In midfield, Stuart Russell and Andy Miller worked tirelessly to overcome their opponents’ strength and steadily establish Dorking’s dominance.
The opening goal came from an Owen Hunte corner, which was met by Watts at the far post, rising above the defence to powerfully head the ball back across the keeper and into the corner of the net.
Further chances followed as James Herouvin - a graduate from Dorking’s U18s and making his first start – began to combine well with captain Kieran Lunn. Herouvin tricked and turned his way on the right, before picking out Lunn in the box, but the ball got stuck under his feet and, when he was able to shoot, it was from a tighter angle with the ball rising over the bar.
The pair linked up again as Herouvin drove a fierce cross across the box, the ball just eluding the outstretched leg of Lunn with the goal at his mercy.
An uneventful start to the second half suited the Chicks, but Frimley Green found themselves back level on the hour
following a goal out of nothing. Dorking keeper Jake Nimmo, newly signed following his progress through the Leatherhead youth system, parried a rare and close range Frimley shot, only to see the ball fall to the feet of Tom Cowan who tapped in the equaliser from just a few yards out.
Dorking boss responded immediately, bringing on striker George Knight, and the substitution paid off within ten minutes as Kieran Lunn played a delightful through ball to put Knight in on goal, and he coolly lifted his shot over the Frimley keeper going to ground, and into the net to restore the Dorking lead.
Given recent defensive lapses, the final minutes were an understandably nervy affair as Dorking began to sit deeper protecting their lead.
The sizable crowd – Dorking’s second biggest of the season since returning to play home games in the town – had their heart in their mouths as Frimley Green hit the underside of the bar. But that was the solitary clear goal scoring chance as the Chicks defended with commitment and in numbers, to seal their second win of the season.

FIRST SPADE GOES INAT MEADOWBANKCHICKS WILL BE BACK HOME IN 2017
What a difference a couple of years can make.
December 2013 and the roof literally fell in on Dorking FC. With the clubhouse collapsing and structures deemed unsafe, Meadowbank, the Chicks’ home for 60 years, was condemned and the club was forced into a nomadic existence to complete the season’s fixtures. One of the most picturesque and iconic non-league football grounds in the south-east was now a ruin. With the site earmarked for development by a leading supermarket, there seemed little hope that the football ground or the club could survive.
Two seasons later and the future looks rather different.
Last week, the ‘first spade’ went in, marking the start of building of the new Meadowbank - a new stadium on the original site. It will see the Chicks return home at the start of the 2017-18 season to a multi-million pound state-of-the-art
ground with a 3G artificial grass pitch providing a boost to grassroots football in and around Dorking, and a real shot in the arm to the town centre.
So what changed in the meantime?
Firstly, Dorking FC came under new ownership in May 2014 as the homeless club was saved from likely extinction by a group of friends - local businessmen and grassroots football enthusiasts – who converted it to a Community Interest Company, meaning the club would now be run as a social enterprise with any assets locked into community benefits. Secondly, the plan for reconnecting the club to the community and working with other clubs to develop local, young talent to achieve their potential in their home town caught the imagination of some visionary officers and Councillors at Mole Valley, who saw the opportunity to create a special facility for the town.
“The First Spade goes in at Meadowbank last week”
“Meadowbank shortly after it was closed in 2013”
As with any major redevelopment, there have been ups, downs and doubts that it would ever get off the ground. But the determination of those involved culminated this week with building work getting underway and, over the next year, we’ll all be able to see the plans become reality.
Speaking at the event to mark the start of construction, Dorking FC Press Director Roger Mahony said, “We had three key aims when we took over the club - to ensure the survival of the Chicks and its 130 year history, to reconnect the club to the local community and run it in the interests of the town, and to ensure Meadowbank remained a football ground with a lasting legacy. The start of rebuilding work today puts that final piece of the jigsaw in place.”
As well as being the home ground of the Dorking FC, the new Meadowbank promises to be once of the most vibrant football hubs in Surrey. Dorking Wanderers, our highly progressive partners in the Dorking Football Development Alliance, will be using the stadium
19
as their home venue, so there’ll be first team football on offer at the ground nearly every Saturday. Also, Surrey FA will be relocating to make Meadowbank their new head office and the ground will provide much needed all-weather training facilities for the area’s youth football clubs - meaning it will be used by around 1000 local boys and girls every week.“When we first took over the club,” says Roger, “we spoke to several people who remembered Meadowbank opening in 1953. They told us, somewhat misty-eyed, that it had been the pride of the town. With such exciting plans for the use of the new stadium, we can be confident Meadowbank will be the pride of the town once again.”
“Of course, the iconic green stand is gone, and a more modern structure will rise in its place. Some people who’ve followed the club for a long time find that hard, but that was a football ground from the 1950s, and this is a ground that will take us in to the 2050s.”
“We still have our memories of how it was then and now’s the time to make a load of new memories for this and future generations.”

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC
Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.
An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.
On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.
Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.
The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a
stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.
In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.
On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.
The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.
We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority

on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.
The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.
An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council
for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.
Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY
BECKENHAM TOWN FC
Beckenham Town Football Club is one of the older non-league clubs still in
existence, being first affiliated to The Kent Football Association in 1887.
Records show the club played in the London League from 1923 to 1933 and 1951 to 1961 and the Aetolian League from 1961 to 1964 before moving to the Greater London League from 1964 to 1969. In addition to its present day participation in the FA Cup and FA Vase, it also competed in the FA Amateur Cup from 1926 to 1967.
Amongst the club’s past Presidents is ex-Prime Minster the Rt. Hon Harold Macmillan MP and amongst the club’s Vice Presidents is Sydney Wooderson one of Britain’s greatest middle-distance runners.
Honours include the London League Championship in 1927-28 and runners-up in 1930-31.
Unfortunately, the club folded in 1969 merging with Bromley FC. The club was subsequently re-formed and joined London Spartan League in 1975 and enjoyed some early success being Runners-up to Fisher Athletic in the Spartan League Senior Division in 1977-78. Town also reached two Spartan League Cup Finals, losing to Welling United and Farnham Town. More recent successes have been two previous appearances in the Kent League Cup Final in 1984-85 and 1992-93 and Runners-Up to
Maidstone Utd in the Kent League Premier Division in 2005-06. This season, after three previous unsuccessful attempts in 1981-82,2004/05 and 2007/08, finally victory in the Kent Senior Trophy after a 4-0 win over Ashford Utd at Longmead Stadium in April. In July 1980 Beckenham moved from Stanhope Grove to their present ground in Eden Park Avenue joining the Kent League in 1982-83. In 2003 Beckenham were awarded £100,000 by the Football Foundation for ground improvements which enabled the ground to become enclosed and their award winning pitch along with a drainage system to be laid
Amongst Becks ex-players are goalkeeper Ray Potter who played over 220 games for West Bromwich Albion, Frank “Dot” Morris who played over 70 games for Crystal Palace and Pat Saward who played for Aston Villa in the 50’s and captained The Republic of Ireland. More recently ex-Charlton Athletic star Jason Euell wore Beckenham’s colours.
