DISCIPLES IN MISSION/PASTORAL PLANNING February 14 – First Sunday in Lent This is a busy day. Catechumens and Candidates head to the Cathedral for the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Con-version. During this period of Purification and Enlightenment they need our continued prayers. And today is Valentine’s Day! The readings ae not about cherubs with bows and arrows, but are all about love. Out of love God delivered His people from slav-ery in Egypt and sent His Son to redeem us. And Jesus’ love for us brought him to fast for 40 days in the desert and withstand temptations of the devil. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the three hallmarks of Lent. With Jesus as our model, we can incor-porate all three into our lives this Lent. All for love of Him who first loved us. Unconditionally.

st Place Winner Dominic Piscopo – “Attack on Paris” excerpts from a speech by

President Obama Good evening, everybody. I just want to make a few brief comments about the attacks across Paris tonight. Once again, we’ve seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians. This is an attack not just on Paris, it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance that the government and the people of France need to respond. France is our oldest ally. The French people have stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States time and again. And we want to be very clear that we stand together with them in this fight against terrorism and extremism. This is a heartbreaking situation. And obviously those of us here in the United States know what it’s like. We’ve gone through these kinds of episodes ourselves and whenever these attacks happened, we’ve always been able to count on the French people to stand with us. They have been an extraordinary counter-terrorism partner, and we intend to be there with them in that same fashion. I’m sure that in the days ahead we’ll learn more about exactly what happened and my teams will make sure that we are in communication with the press to provide you accurate information. I don’t want to speculate at this point in terms of who was responsible for this. It appears that there may still be live activity and dangers that are taking place as I speak. And so until we know from French officials that the situation is under control, and we have more information about it, I don’t want to speculate. Thank you very much. February Student Spotlight Awards were given out on Tuesday, February 2nd at the 9am Liturgy. Congratula-tions to the following winners – Jackson Spitz – Pre-K, Emma McNeil – K1, Meghan McGoldrick - K2B, Mari Flanagan – K2C, Callum Wallace – 1A, Maeve Pugsley – 1B, Kate Bridges – Grade 2, Abby Kelly – Grade 3, James Sansone – Grade 4, Mia McCarthy – Grade 5 and Ryan Melia – Grade 6.
