• The Direct Object receives the action of the verb in a clause.

• For example: She eats the cake.• To find the Direct Object, ask the question:

verb + whom/what? In the example, eats what? - the cake.

• The Direct object may be a noun, as in our example, or a pronoun.

• In French, the Direct Object Pronoun (DOP) must PRECEDE the verb in a simple tense.Je le vois. I see him.Je les voyais souvent. I used to see them often.

• In an infinitive construction, the DOP goes before the infinitive.Je vais le voir. I’m going to see him.Je ne peux pas les voir. I can’t see them.

• In the Passé Composé, the DOP precedes the form of avoir. (Remember, être verbs don’t HAVE a Direct Object.)

• The PP then agrees with what is known as the Preceding Direct Object.

• J’ai vu mon ami. > Je l’ai vu.• J’ai vu mon amie. > Je l’ai vue.• J’ai vu mes amis. > Je les ai vus.• J’ai vu mes amies. > Je les ai vues.

• In a negative clause, the DOP still goes IMMEDIATELY before the conjugated verb and the “ne” goes before that. The “pas” (or other negative particle) goes after the verb, as normal.Je ne le vois pas. I don’t see him.Je ne le voyais pas souvent. I didn’t see him often.

Je ne les ai pas vus. I haven’t seen them.

construction, the negative particles go around the conjugated verb and the DOP goes before the infinitive.Je ne vais pas les voir. I’m not going to see them.Elle ne veut plus le voir. She doesn’t want to see him any more.Ils ne peuvent pas l’acheter. They can’t buy it.
