How to Take Care of Dull and Stained Teeth

Modern science has come up with many ways to brighten dull-looking and stained teeth. The method you choose might depend on how much time you have before the wedding—and how much money you want to spend.

Whitening ToothpasteWhitening toothpastes are perhaps the most inexpensive way to whiten your teeth. However, even if you use whitening toothpaste two times a day, it can take up to six weeks to see a difference. Whitening toothpastes have chemicals that remove stains and other ingredients that polish the teeth.

Some whitening toothpastes contain a chemical called blue covarine. This sticks to the surface of the tooth and makes it appear whiter. If you use toothpaste with this ingredient you may notice results right away.

TraysYou can buy tray tooth whitening systems from your local drug store or get them from your dentist. They work with a gel solution that you put in the tray, and then you wear it like a mouth guard. You wear the tray every day for at least four weeks, depending on how discolored your teeth are. How long you wear the tray everyday depends on which product you buy.

Mouthwash

•Tooth whitening mouthwashes have the benefit of being easy to use—you just have to gargle with them for a couple of minutes a day. Also, you get the added benefit of fresher breath and a healthier mouth when you use them. However, you may not notice a change in your smile for 12 weeks.

Whitening Strips

•You can get whitening strips at your local drug store, and often you can start seeing results in less than a week. These are thin strips that have gel with peroxide on them that you wear on your teeth for about half an hour a day for two weeks. The final results last for about four months.

Dental Office Whitening

Going to a dental office for teeth whitening is perhaps the quickest way to get rid of dull or stained teeth—however, it’s also the most expensive. A special whitening chemical is applied to your teeth. Depending on your dentist’s whitening method, a special laser, light, or heat may be used as well. The whole process takes less than an hour, and often you see dramatic results with just one visit, although more than one visit is usually recommended for best results.
