I am pleased to welcome you to our Donor Report for 2010/11in which we update you on the latest projects, scholarshipsand other developments at the University of Kent, which yourgenerosity has helped to make possible. Education can transformlives – not just the lives of the students we welcome through ourdoors but also of the people they come into contact with as theygo out into the world, either directly or indirectly, through thework they do. The funding we receive from alumni, parents, staff past and present, and friends of the University, plays anessential part in this enormously rewarding process.

The University of Kent prides itself on providing inspirationalteaching, academic excellence and world-leading research. We aredelighted that this has been recognised by the 2012 GuardianUniversity Guide, which ranks us 23rd out of 119 institutions forteaching excellence. Through stimulating, research-led teaching –97% of our academic staff work in schools or centres where theresearch is rated as internationally or nationally excellent –delivered in a friendly, encouraging environment, our studentscan realise their ambitions. We are honoured that your supportmakes this possible – now, and for future generations.

Donation toKent Print Collection

Two 16th-century prints have just beendonated to the Kent Print Collection byJohn Chown. They are copies of worksby major printmakers of the Renaissanceperiod – ‘Cain trying to hide away fromGod’ by Etienne Delaune (c1518-83),below, and ‘The Peasants’ Brawl’ byHans Sebald Beham (1500-50).

Etienne Delaune was a draughtsman, designer, printmaker and goldsmith, whose work was admired for its style andtechnical precision. Hans Sebald Behamwas one of the Little Masters, Germanprintmakers who produced very smallprints of exquisite detail.

You may have read alreadythat, as a result of drastic cutsin our government funding,we have decided to chargestudents the maximum £9,000fees from September 2012.

Raising our fees will enable us to continueto invest in our first-rate facilities and toattract world-class academics – with theresults reflected in our excellent rankingsin university league tables, and in highlevels of student satisfaction.

As well as having these plans to raise feesapproved by the Office for Fair Access(OFFA), the university fees watchdog, wehave also had approved our proposals toattract more students from disadvantagedbackgrounds. We have set up a fund of£6 million for 2012/13, to provide financialsupport to students. OFFA believes thatfewer than half of students will actuallybe charged £9,000, once fee waivers andother bursaries are taken into account. Moreover part-time students, previouslyexcluded from the student loans system, will be allowed access to tuition fee loansfrom 2012.

University is not just about academicachievements. It expands experienceson many levels, teaches independence, teamwork, discipline and gives uniqueopportunities for volunteering, anddeveloping interests outside your degree. So the last thing we want to do is deterthose with potential from applying to theUniversity of Kent. We believe we havetaken the right steps to ensure wecontinue to deliver a top-qualityexperience to all our students.

DONOR REPORT 2010/2011

Dr Ben Thomas, Lecturer in History andPhilosophy of Art and who founded theCollection, is delighted with these valuableadditions: “These are significant prints; infact, the copy of ‘The Peasants’ Brawl’ isso close to the original that it may actuallyhave been engraved again by thisimportant German artist. As copies madein the 16th century – and so not ‘fakes’ –the two prints are instructive to compareagainst the originals. Students can learn, through this close comparative work, howto identify copies and distinguish themfrom originals.”

Change to inheritance tax

A change to inheritance tax has beenproposed, to come into effect from April2012, with the aim of encouraging peopleto leave more money to charity.

Under the proposals, anyone who leavesmore than 10% of the ‘net residue’ of theirestate to a charity (the net residue beingthe amount remaining after deductinggifts to a spouse, the Nil Rate Band of£325,000 currently exempt frominheritance tax, and any other reliefs)would benefit from a 36% rate ofinheritance tax rather than the usual 40%.

its achievements. I think, with the rightpeople in the right place, it has thepotential to become one of the 20 bestuniversities in the UK.

“There is a huge vitality there. There are somany young people doing things, makingthings happen. I’ve seen the School ofArts set up, Kent Business School, andDICE of course – I feel that despite thedifficulties universities face, there are stillmany possibilities to be realised, andwould like to play a further part in it.”

Legacies can take many forms. Oftenthey are simply for the University to useaccording to need at the time the gift isrealised. Sometimes the legacy is forspecific equipment or facilities. We alsoreceive book collections, together withdonations to support the maintenance ofthe collection. Larger gifts can be used toestablish scholarships or hardship funds, and thanks to the generosity of a numberof alumni we are currently discussing theestablishment of several newundergraduate scholarships.

If you are considering remembering usin your will, we understand that this is aprivate matter. However, if you decideto discuss it with us, we can be sure ofany specific wishes you may have, andknowing about it gives us a firmer basisfor planning for the future. It also gives usthe chance to thank you for your support.Naturally, any conversations would be inthe strictest confidence and would notplace you under any obligation.

If you would like to discuss any of thesematters, please contact Jenny Richardson([email protected] or01227 823588).

One person who has made a legacypledge is Professor Ian Swingland(above), whose involvement with theUniversity of Kent began in 1979 andwho founded the Durrell Institute forConservation and Ecology (DICE) tenyears later.

Explaining the decision to leave a legacy,he says: “I have seen the University ofKent make huge strides in the last 20to 30 years, from somewhere near thebottom of the league tables to its currentposition near the top, and I feel proud of

At the University of Kentwe pride ourselves on ourstrong sense of community.

This is expressed on campus throughthe inspiring, friendly and supportiveatmosphere in which our students andstaff can work, and in the county of Kent, through our contact with local schools andcolleges, volunteer work, sporting and artsactivities.

As a result, we have also developed astrong community of supporters, anumber of whom are generous enoughto leave a legacy to the university. Somedo this because they have fond memoriesof their time at Kent and a desire to helpfuture students share this experience. They may wish to support the specificarea that helped to launch their careeror provided opportunities that would nototherwise have been open to them. Othersmay live in Kent and want to support theirrespected local university. Or they maywant to leave the legacy in memory ofa family member who studied here.

The spade was wielded by JonathanMonckton, Chairman of the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust, watched overby Susan Wanless, Director of UniversityMusic, and accompanied by an impressivefanfare by the University Brass Ensemble.Construction is now well under way, duefor completion in September 2012.

“Sometimes I’ve found it hard to believethat soon we’ll have a dedicated, bespokebuilding, but now I can see the evidencegrowing every day,” Susan says. “Afteryears of rehearsing in dining halls or oddspaces in basements, we’ll have practiceand teaching rooms, a sheet music library, instrument storage and offices, as well asthe fabulous concert hall.

Impressive plans have beendrawn up for the newKent Law Clinic and MootingChamber (right).

The Law Clinic and Mooting Programmeare two distinctive features of Kent LawSchool, contributing to its outstandingreputation: most recently, the Law Clinicwon Best Contribution by a Law School inthe LawWorks & Attorney General StudentAwards 2011 (below), and senior lecturerDr Stewart Motha was shortlisted for LawTeacher of the Year Award 2011(sponsored by Oxford University Press).

At the highly successful Kent Law Clinicstaff, students and roughly 50 lawyers givefree legal advice and representation to thelocal community. However, facilities are 20years old and lack of space means eachyear only 50 of our 1,200 undergraduatescan take on casework.

The Mooting Programme, which currentlyhas no proper home, enables students torole-play as practising advocates, oftenwith a judge or lawyer in practice locally. As well as helping advocacy skills, thispromotes teamwork, develops confidence,self-esteem and encourages leadership.

We are delighted tooffer the opportunity to name the buildingor rooms within it for different levels ofdonation. Rooms could be named after adonor, a family member, charitable trust, company or in memory of a loved one.

Since DICE was founded more than 480students from 82 countries have gainedpostgraduate qualifications. They go on tochange the face of conservation. In 2010Edwin Sabuhoro was invited to PresidentObama’s Young African Leaders’ Forumin recognition of his ecotourism venturein Rwanda, helping poachers becomerescuers of gorillas. Also last year, SheikhAbdulla bin Hamad acknowledged thecontributions of Khawla Al Mohannadi, who founded the Environmental FriendsSociety, the first conservation NGO inBahrain, and has been instrumental inadvising Bahraini environmental policy.

Scholarships give donors the uniqueopportunity to invest in the future ofbiodiversity. Donors can focusscholarships on countries, landscapes orspecies they are concerned about, meetstaff and students to learn more abouttheir work, and even visit DICEconservationists in the field.

Establishing a namedscholarshipAt the University of Kent we strive toensure that talented students can achievetheir potential, regardless of their social oreconomic background. Scholarships arean essential part of realising this vision.

A donation of any size makes a bigdifference, but (unless, of course, youwish to remain anonymous) we will namescholarships on gifts of £3,000 or more, inacknowledgement of your generosity. Youwill also receive news from the recipient ofyour award and be invited to meet them atvarious events. This is a wonderful way tosee how your donation is helping a giftedstudent to pursue their ambitions.

The DICE Scholarship AppealFrom its beginning over 20 years ago, theDurrell Institute of Conservation andEcology (DICE) has advocated that forlong-term conservation success, we mustlook beyond natural science. Conservationis also about communities, beliefs, the law, politics, economics, communication, management and change. No initiative willthrive without all these components andDICE-taught practitioners hold decision-making roles in some of the world’s mostinnovative and successful conservationinitiatives, forming a network acrossdisciplines, industries and countries.

Calling up supportLast autumn a team of students (right)took to the phones, speaking to over 1,600alumni about their life at Kent, catching upon their news, and raising money for theKent Scholarships Campaign

Students are under greater financialpressure than ever before. But by offeringhardship bursaries and a wide range ofscholarships, including AlumniPostgraduate Research, the DurrellInstitute of Conservation and Ecology(DICE), Brussels, Music, History, andseveral benefactor-named scholarships,we can be a magnet for tomorrow’s talent.

For example a previous recipient of thepostgraduate Alumni Scholarship, SamGodfrey (below) was supported whilehe worked on a new therapy for acutemyeloid leukaemia. “It would have beenimpossible to fit a second job around mywork,” Sam says, “but funding allowed myresearch to progress much faster. I’d liketo thank everyone who helped.”

In the current climate, however, it is notjust students who may feel uncertainabout their finances. So we are delightedthat despite this, our alumni feel they canhelp others enjoy studying at Kent.

More than £57,000 was raised over fourweeks, all of which will go towardsproviding support for the best, brighteststudents at Kent, or those in financialdifficulties through no fault of their own.Alumni support means the world to thosewho benefit from this generosity –especially knowing it is former studentswho have made a difference to their lives.

Social aspects of sight lossLosing your sight can be severelydisabling, and may affect you in manymore ways than the most obvious. It hasan impact on social relations – how canyou fully interact with people if you can’tsee their facial expressions? – as well ason the experience of ageing: how theperson feels about themselves, theirattitude to appearance, clothes, movementand specialised devices they may need.

Now the School of Social Policy, Sociologyand Social Research has received agenerous gift of £15,000 for joint fundingof a scholarship for research into theseaspects of sight loss, and the policy

Ostia ExcavationsThe University of Kent’s excavations atOstia, port of Rome, are almost completed.Three years of archaeological fieldworkhave revealed many new observationsabout this vast ancient city during the lastdecades of the Roman Empire (phasedrawings of a street fountain, below, showrepairs in the Late Roman period). Thiswork has been possible in large partthanks to the generosity of John Beale, who has been a frequent visitor to the dig.

“Our expedition has revealed that Ostia didnot decline in favour of the new imperialharbour city of Portus, as once thought,”explains Dr Luke Lavan, Classical andArchaeological Studies. “Rather, there isextensive evidence of repair to its majorpublic buildings throughout the fourth andearly fifth centuries. The streets were stillfull of marble fountains and new plazas

“This year, John funded a six-month visit toconsult the archives of the site museum, and supported a digitisation assistant whohas brought our plans and records up topublication standard. Such work brings upas many discoveries as excavation on thesite itself. It also gives us the welcomechance to revise our documentation whenwe visit the site for the final time.

“The final study season, supported byJohn Beale and John Osborn, will includelaser scanning of the excavated buildingsand an intensive study of the ceramicsand small finds. We hope our maindiscoveries – such as a tiny Late Romantemple – will soon reach the internationalaudience they deserve, having kept Kent’sstudents busy for three hot summers.”

In partnership for cricketingexcellenceKent Sport has a great partnership withKent County Cricket Club (KCCC) acrossa number of areas. In particular, offeredin conjunction with J & K Huntley, theClub provides a scholarship with the aimof retaining the best young cricketerswithin the county – players that KCCCmay in some cases have spent manyyears developing.

“KCCC select their best young playerswho wish to study with us,” explainsGraham Holmes, Director of Sport at theUniversity of Kent. “They provide up to£1,500 per year which we then match.

“The student receives first class cricketsupport from KCCC, and first classsupport as a sports scholar from KentSport. It is a win/win situation.

“James Goodman [left], who is startingwith us in September 2011, has alreadyplayed in KCCC’s first eleven – which isa remarkable achievement at such ayoung age. I am quite sure that he willgo on to have a flourishing career incricket after he completes his degree, and I am delighted that we are able tosupport him.”
